He intended to live out his life in his own way as he sees fit. After all, he's merely a human and nothing else. (His defiance against his father's wishes and making his own choices was somehow involves his Self-Awareness)

They don’t explain it in the anime. Ayanakoji stayed at home for a year the butler Matsuo helped Ayanakoji apply for the school by mentioning that his father would not be able to get him since it’s funded by the government. His dad was so upset he went after the Matsuo’s son by ruining his future. Ayanakoji father made sure he got rejected of any school so and he be forced to apply to low paying jobs. Matsuo begged and pleaded to go after him and not target his son so he did set himself on fire hoping it Ayanakoji’s dad would resend his decision and get his son’s life back on track
