(Excerpt from Rav Pinson's book: "The Month of Tamuz and Av: Embracing Brokenness") "In the words of R. Eliezer Azikri,the 16th Century Israeli mystic and poet: “A person who looks upon another person with jealousy causes an Ayin haRa to rest upon the person he is observing”(Sefer Chareidim, Divrei Kevushin,4). In general, as Rabbi Menachem Rikanti (1250-1310CE) writes: “Know that the sense of sight has power to affect,for good or for ill.” (Rikanti, Vayikra, 19:4. See also Ben Yehoyadah, Berachos 152a). In the language of Rabbeinu Yonah,“A type of ‘toxic vapor’ is released from the eyes of a person who has an Ayin haRa, which emanates from within his thoughts and ‘burns’ what he is looking at” (Rabbeinu Yonah, Avos, 2:11. See also, Derashos HaRan, Derush 8). Looking at another person with jealousy releases a negative energy, which obscures the Light of Creation. If this negativity is absorbed by the recipient, it can have a deleterious effect (Toras Chayim, Baba Metziya, 84; Chazon Ish, Ha’aros Baba Basra, Siman 21). Yet, it is important to note that this ‘energy’ only has an effect upon one if they ‘accept’ or ‘believe’ in its power to do so..." Regarding the opinion of the Rambam and Ayin Harah, in a letter , (IgrosHaRambam, Shalit, p. 509), the Rambam writes "לא שאני לכו בין הזק ראיה ...ובין הזק ראיה שיראה קמת חבירו משום עינא בישא שאלו דברי חסידות הן"In other words, there is a concept of Ayin Hara, just it is a slighter form of damage.

Thank you for the in depth understanding of Gods construction and deconstruction reflected in our eyes. The understanding of a right vs left eye of good and evil and the ability to influence others through them...even scientifically proven..was an eye opener...pun intended! I just had cataract surgery and looking at the world now is clear and beautiful...and all the past reflections and memories are now in the past. The refreshed looking ahead is just miraculous.....and God has blessed the world through the doctors who can literally bring light into their patients life. And God blesses Rabbis like you who bring understanding into their readers lives.🥰
