Cigar makers have been doing this for years !!! They take a cigar and place a different ring on it and either mark it as a special reserve or limited release and it sells like crazy 😁

It would make sense if it was an unfiltered version.

I went to the website and could not see the Winterbock either. They also Have an unfiltered version of Jahrhundert they serve seasonally. Likely this unfiltered Jahrhundert beer is sold locally.

Dean thinks they are different beers. I had one recently and I say this one is a heavy mouthfeel, rich malts without going too rich, sweet without going too sweet and no burn at all. It drinks bigger than the abv in it weight, but you can down it way too easily because it is such a quality product. Now my opinion is at 6.7 percent that is a very low abv for a doppelbock. Abv wise it is on the high end of a regular bock. The original gravity may be high enough to be a doppelbock. The thing here is that Ayinger has two things going against it when making two different dark beers at the same abv. First it is very difficult to distinguish differences in dark lagers when they are made with the same yeast. Dark malts cover up subtle flavors which is why mediocre breweries can produce great dark beers and ho hum pale ones. Ayinger also produces beer that are very malty anyways. Even if the grain bill had minor differences it would be next to impossible to tell on the palate. Now if Ayinger wants to contact me and keep me quiet I can be bought with some Jahrhundert. That beer is my favorite ever. Ayinger ain’t a brewery that brew dark beers to cover up flaws.

Be honest, you just wanted to drink 2.5 Celebrators. I think they sell it because the abv is low enough to be a regular bock. Also there are few guys out there who are such devoted fans of Ayinger beer who would notice. Your run of the mill guy buys it because it is a seasonal thing and let’s face it none of us shop rationally at that time of the year.
