The reason why your motor is kicking up when you put in reverse is. You're probably missing lock down mechanism on the outboard. On my outboard I need to pull the lever to raise & lock in. I also have to pull the same lever to lower & lock it in. Hope this helps. Keep up the great content! 🤙

18:50 You need to adjust your reverse lockout. When you put it in reverse it should stay down, there should be an adjustment on the tilt bracket. Those motors are one of the best 2-strokes ever made, the hard starting problem could be just the carburetor being dirty. Also make sure you squeeze the primer bulb till its hard and pull the prime knob out and twist it to advance the timing and throttle. With it reving up in neutral the throttle and shift cables might need to be adjusted, that can be done either on the motor or binnacle. Other than that it'll be a great boat and hopefully you'll have some fun times in her. Keep up the great content!

Hard agree, I have a similar small mercury for a Coleman Crawdad, got it cheap from a guy that didn't know what he was doing. Had to pull the carb and clean it out and adjust throttle and fuel mix inside the motor but ran great afterwards. It actually goes faster than I feel comfortable since crawdads are essentially a floating plastic bathtub haha

AYO, look up how to adjust the idle on that motor. It wont fix itself by running it more. it should idle low enough that it smoothly goes into gear, slow enough to almost go trolling with it. If you don't get the idle adjusted down and it keeps smashing into gear like that, you'll wreck the lower unit... ask me how i found out lol. There should be a lock on your motor mount for when you put it in reverse so it doesn’t fly out of the water. That is a safety feature just in case you hit something while driving forward.
