I'm an Aussie and I had the pleasure of watching this champion with my own eyes on numerous occasions around the Adelaide F1 circuit back in the day. I remember watching the GP at Imola late at night as a 20 yo and the death of Ronald Ratzenberger the day before, and then Senna was heart breaking for an F1 fan since the age of 6. I balled my eyes out for days, because he was my hero and favourite driver and when I see the videos like this, of course, still brings a tear to the eye. Cars back in those days were slower than the cars we see in F1 today, but they certainly didn't have the technology as they do today with every single component. They were just raw manual geared beasts back in those days and certainly not the safety of the car itself and the track too that we have today. Little inside info, I'm the proud God Father of two girls named Senna, 9 and Imola aged 6.

Back in the 80s and 90s My Uncle drove one of the hospitality unit lorries for Mclaren . Unlike today when they all go to Barcelona for testing , teams used to have to use the nearest grand prix licensed circuit to their base. For Mclaren that was Brands Hatch. I went to watch them testing on several occasions as a young teenager and on one of those occasions when the cars were being prepared, I got to kick a football around with Ayrton and his teamate Gerhart Burger . He was so welcoming and humble, I have a signed Helmet of his at home :)

That's the ultimate GOAT for you. Brazil's pride! Brazil's real life HERO! About he crashing to win, it was payback for the year before, when the same Prost crashed in on purpose, but he came back, won the race and got disqualified unfairly because the president of F-1 was french like Prost. So in the next year they even tried to change his side of the starting line, that's why he lose his pole position in the start (because the grip on the other side is better)...so he said: "If I can't be the first in the first corner, nobody will". And then he told everybody in the F-1 adm to go to hell and did it.

Some things not mentioned in the video: In his first victory in the Brazilian GP Senna had his gearbox stuck in 6th gear for the last 7 laps and won. The year before his world winning year he had been knocked off the track by the same driver (who would also win if Senna didn't finish the race), but Senna continued the race with the damaged car, lost 13 positions while repairing the car, came back and won the race. (This race was annulled because he "did not follow the route to get back on the track at the time of the accident", which is completely ridiculous since other runners did the same without punishment) He also never raced in a computer-assisted car and it was precisely because of his car designed to receive a computer that never came that he and another driver lost their lives, The car was just too unstable without the computers and couldn't be controlled properly, it just completely changed the center of traction at random.

Back in my childhood, back when Senna raced, me and my grandmother watched F1 every single weekend and we were rooting for Senna every time. Then that race at Imola happened and neither of us have watched F1 since. He was the reason we watched. He was a large part of bonding with my grandmother. He will always have a special place in my heart for that reason. A ruthless sportsman dedicated to the win, yes, but also a generous and admirable human being.

There was a moment in 2009 or 2010 when Ayrton Senna's nephew Bruno started racing in formula one. It was during the bbc monaco coverage that there was a quote from martin brudle ( who was at that point now a f1 commentator) remarked that looking at Bruno geared up with his helment on, visor up " stops me in my tracks, he looks exactly like Ayrton." His legacy is definately still with modern F1.

In that era all pilots were monsters, the cars were absurdly light (500 Kg) and dangerous, no computerized electronic assistance (the pilot needed to control EVERYTHING), the tracks were dangerous with bad asphalt, in the middle of all that, the engines of the cars were true turbocharged beasts of up to 1450 Hp, and when the turbos came into action, the car was transformed from a sailing boat to an electric chair in a second, and with all this field of war, Ayrton Senna managed to be FAR ABOVE all the other experienced warriors. As Tina Turner personally told him, dedicating her song to him at one of her concerts after his victory in Australia... He was "Simply The Best"! Brazil still misses you and will always miss you, champ! 🙏🏻🇧🇷

The cars were monsters back then, especially the 80s turbocharged F1 cars that preceded Senna's time at McLaren. The problem was you had to slow them down a lot to take a corner, or else you'd fly off into the scenery because of the lack of downforce. In the early 90s, there were already some limitations that didn't allow teams to push the power of the cars beyond the limit, but as Clarkson said in the video, Senna's car was one of the last "wild beasts" to remain. It puts Senna's mastery and control in a whole different light, especially considering what Hamilton said. The crazy thing is that the "safety revolution" that came in the late 90s and early 2000s was largely because of Senna's crash at Imola in 1994. It's likely that, because of Senna's death, a lot of drivers were saved from simlar fates, since the officials finally took notice of the huge safety issues, and decided to change the rules.

Prost was by far the best at Monaco before Senna joined a top team. Outqualifying Prost by 0.4sec at Monaco in the same machinery is already monstrous in the highest of standards. But by 1.4sec…is just unfathomable. Senna’s raw speed is virtually unparalleled, but his biggest weakness was his consistency. It’s his mentality to “go for the gap” and push to the limit that made him crash relatively a lot. Prost was very calculative and therefore he outscored Senna in both years in 1988 and 1989 when they were teammates simply because he scored consistently. It’s Prost’s unparalleled consistency that made Senna become obsessed with him to the point he wanted him to come back from retirement in 1994 just to fight him. Senna’s competitive mentality is simply one of the kind, and it’s borderline insane.
@Gabrielnobre
@Gabrielnobre Жыл бұрын
Most of his F-1's career he had inferior cars (and even when he got the best car he had the best to compete with him in the same car)...so he always had to go for "the miracle"....and did quite a lot of them. You cannot say he hadn't "consistency" when he almost all the time had to beat superior cars (with legendary pilots in it). If he had the best cars most of the time you would see that the man was like a perfect clock.

@Gabrielnobre
@Gabrielnobre 11 ай бұрын
@@maryrocha4375Simple man...The 88 season rule was not about the points, it was about VICTORIES. So Senna won 8 and Prost won 7. The points were useless in that season. And yes, Prost did more points, but that's not what the rule value. So, again, is really shameful that a Prost fan want to throw this BS argument on the table...really shameful.

It wasn't cause of that it was because the number 1 grid slot was on the dirty side of the track and FIA refused to listen so if prost were to get ahead he would make sure none of them would make it out of turn 1.
@henry247
@henry247 Жыл бұрын
@@flintey360It was ALSO bcuz of that... Many things added fuel to the fire that weekend...during the drivers' briefing other drivers suggested that it would be safer for the driver to rejoin the track in case if they went off at the last corner through the run off area which was exactly what he did on the previous year and the FIA agreed with it while on the previous year he got disqualified for that which made him lose the championship that year and it got him even angrier 😂 Ofc u can say the Marshalls pushed his car but thats not the reason he got disqualified for.

Senna wasn't really proud of taking Prost out at the 1st corner to win the championship, but after they (Prost and the head of F1) basically took away his chance to win the year before with a biased ruling on Senna he basically said screw it. The head of F1 even admitted later he ruled in favor of giving his fellow Frenchman (Prost) the championship.

The cars today are the fastest f1 cars ever, and the fastest cars ever. records are 2004,05,18,19,20,21,22,23. So in this years the cars brakes records, like in this years was the trackrecords set on the tracks where f1 races at who stand till today, and no other car can mach an f1 car. The cars back than was 10 secounds slower. But not that easy to drive. With manual gear... Nowdays you can controll the cars better but its simular i think because the cars today are so fast that the g forces and everything, back in the day we had abs and traction controll but we dont have that anymore, cars are actually faster without thouse things and so yeah. Crashes are risky because in highspeed but if you crash today in highspeed its dangarous to because of the extrem speed we have on the cars nowadays, like we saw in 2014 the death of bianchi or 2019 the death of hubert in the formula 2 who are way slower than f1 cars but have the same safety standards

Cars now have faster lap times because of a lot of aerodynamics that helps assist them with a lot of mechanical grip in the corners. The cars back then had a ton of brutal power. As they said, about 450 more hp in a car that was hard to turn and handle.

The cars back then were faster in a straight line as they had more horsepower and weight less. Now with the improvements in tire technology and aerodynamics the current F1 cars take turns way faster than the old cars and turn faster laps times with less horsepower and lower top speed.

After the turbocharger was retired because of safety in the late 80's and eletronics came into play in the mid 90's that cars started to actually slowing down. That especific McLaren used to reach 380 Km/h going downhill. It was an amazing thing to watch and also an absolut insane death trap.

Senna is by far one of the greatest F1-Drivers ever till Schumacher comes into his way. I mean no bashing here but you can easily get into a fight of the question "who's the greatest driver of all time?" For me it`s Michael Schumacher ('cause I'm German) and Senna close behind. The thing is all 2 done so much charity things off track that they deserve the title "Greatest Driver Of All Time" and on track you can't belive your eyes about their skills. I love both of them but can you remember that earthquake in England as Top Gear reveal The Stig? kzbin.info/www/bejne/kHTZlYeOp72meMU and kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqLMnp-Kjt6HjKM

Neal do not forget that there is a small "miss interpretatioon" in the story of this small documentary, by the way, very well, made by TopGear UK. This "miss interpretatioon" is the history about GP1990 Japón (7:45 @kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4bCfGpsq7V6j9E) where they only tell what Senna did in that GP in 90. They didn't tell about what happened at the same Japanese GP in the previous year (1989), where Prost did the same thing (shocked his car at Senna), but nevertheless Senna managed to return to the track after the accident and, in addition, won it race, which in that case would give the title (89) to Senna. But in some way they punished Senna for returning to the track (for having returned to the track through the run-off area, which was legitimate by rule, if not because of what it is a run-off area) and he was disqualified from the race. It was the same situation mentioned by the documentary in 1990, but in favor of Prost in 1989. In other words, the 1990 Japanese GP, was a return / revange, there was a reason why Senna did what he did. That's why I think he was so cold in his statement after the accident. www.ayrtonsenna.com.br/piloto/formula-1/temporada-1989/grande-premio-do-japao-1989/
