Very inspiring video session. I got my black belt under Fred Wrenn and Robert Biggs and Kirby Finders in St. Louis in 1985/86. I went on to train and compete 8n kickboxing under another pioneer of the sport, Ike Stafford in Springfield Missouri, and he took me to compete in Japan 3 times. I was very fortunate in who I met in the martial arts, but I couldn't have done it without hard work and dedication, and that only comes from within.

The first time I saw Benny was on the wide world of sports, where he did these flying spinning kicks to Dana Goodson‘s head, and he was hitting him with it! I thought that only happened in the movies and he was this little guy beating the crap out of this giant, who outweighed him who had him on height, and being a little guy myself I instantly fell in love he instantly became my inspiration for wanting to do martial arts and fight like him. I love the fact also that he was a family man that he was a Christian man and that he was a warrior.

What I loved about Benny and Bill Wallace was that when they stepped into the ring, they looked like martial artists. They didn’t look like bargain, basement boxers, who threw a few sloppy kicks. Their kicks were focused fast and had excellent form and power. They made me believe in the power of good technique because they always had it what was especially impressive about Bill was that you knew exactly what was coming and he still hit you with it several times! I said to myself, if this is an a master, I don’t know what is

Of schools with pseudo cultist devotion portion of the earlier culture , bcoz that is the major reason when they see guys fall whitout touch etc that these youngster saw to stay away from earlier traditions

It’s a sad state of affairs that these karate magazines have nothing to talk about unless they’re talking about Karate people from the 60s. You mean to tell me there’s nobody currently that’s worth reporting about? That’s absurd and it’s poor reporting and laziness on the part of the writers the photographers and the support staff.

In regards to honor, there isn't much left nowadays! Too many egomaniacs! We've went from bragging rights to taking things too seriously! Then some folks don't understand the difference between fighting & sport fighting, marketing & promoting, & back to that damn ego. Some feel like, If I can beat you then you're no good or your art is no good. Then ppl confuse reality with the movies! Master Splinter & Yoda are characters in the movies but, the storyline of the old wise super sharp invincible "master" is in ppl's heads. Then in real life you lose (God forbid a one-sided loss) & all the doubts & teasing starts. Awww man you paid all that money to take karate, boxing, bjj, or whatever. . . and still lost. You spent all that time doing kata's & got washed up. Alot of gyms are just looking for their next star too. So be careful in some of these places. Whether it's boxing or mma or whatever! They'll show you a few things then throw you to the wolves. These types are not honorable! They're just trying to make a few bucks at whoever's expense! The lines between honor & respect & making money can become blurry because fighting is emotional too. And its hard to think clearly when we get emotional.

I think Benny mentioned it in Part 1...that what drove people into MA schools were hero's. So many champions started because of Bruce Lee. They wanted to be like him yet some how along the way they chose other martial arts to excel in. Which was odd hearing because Lee was never a competitor. But it was his larger than life on-screen persona that moved millions to study some kind of MA. Some others found out about Bill Wallace and Benny. Studied Karate then found a kickboxing gym. Some became champions themselves soon after. Today, there are no more MA "hero's". So, that alone might account for I'm guessing less people interested in the MA. I mean why else would any one want to study a martial art today? What would be the point? Just as another form of aerobic exercise? Sport? Arts where you still do get hit if accidentally too hard. Worth the risk? When I was in my early teens I wanted to join a local kickboxing gym. For the wrong reasons. Thought it would make me "more of a man" . Give me more credibility in school. Like this one boy who was training at a good local kickboxing gym (though his parents didn't let him step in the ring). For immature reasons. Now decades later I'm glad my parents didn't allow me. Knowing the damage full-contact fighters get. Our heads are not designed to take blows. Each blow causes damage. The damage unfixable. Usually. If I had kids today I would't let them join a full-contact fighting gym either. Honestly, of all the sports out there why pick one where you take damage at training then more so at THE FIGHT.?? Makes no sense. I honestly no longer see the allure of MA's. I was a huge MA fan since I was a boy. Huge Bruce Lee fan. And did study JP Karate. Long ago. I no longer see a point.

..the other reaason why people study is under the false belief they would be able to defend themselves in a real situation. Being naive about the realities. That in most cases it will never be a one one one. The other guy won't be the same size and skill. That most likely it will be you vs a group of unknown numbers. Nor will we know if they are armed. How serious they are. Are they willing to kill us to take our money or new SUV? And that when it happens it wont be like in a John Wick movie. For the same reason I feel firearms "home-defence" "personal defence" is a joke. Chances are the average guy has never been in a gunfight. It's one thing to train for one at some seminar or a gun range. Once it's real most people freeze up. Forget what they know. Realizing it isn't like in the movies. They could die. As will whoever is with them...family, GF or friends.. It's income for ex-military or retired LEO. Which is kind of scary. Hundreds flock to these weekend seminars held by ex-MA champions thinking their are going to have a good time AND learn valuable tips for a real attack. Even though they're in no shape for a real fight/attack. Don't know they will freeze up and forget. Panic like they never have. Setting up countless people for a rude awakening. Reality is...even Bill or Benny in their prime...wont make it against a group of attackers. At most they'll last a few minutes longer than we would. knock out mabye 2 attackers before the other 3 or 5 swarm them. Punching and kicking them. Some stabbing them. Another maybe at some point pulling out a gun. Doesn't matter how good ONE person is...in a real situation..vs many (unknown #).

Nothing but respect for all of them, I love watching the old fights they are great martial artists. I am just a little bit confused about Wallace? Saying those were the blood and guts days. Today, in ufc or mma these guys are bloodied way more than than the old kickboxing days and they fight more realistically like a street fight actually is. It’s like they don’t like it because you can take someone down and choke them out. Maybe I’m misunderstanding them but that’s my 2 cents.

You are exactly right. They wouldn't last 10 seconds with today's MMA fighters, but in their own mind, they are still living in those ancient days. Bruce Lee is the only one out of these bozos who even attempted to train for "real" combat during his lifetime, like MMA today. Benny speaks of leaving this life with nothing but his martial arts memories? Wonder how far that would go in the afterlife?

All this talk about nobody fighting hard today means three things 1. They don't know the upper East Coast 2. Don't walk into MMA gyms 3. They think Kyokushin, Sanda, K1, Isshinryu, and et al don't exist. I agree Benny was Great, Bill Wallace was fast and sneaky. But they are out of touch with what's been happening since the 70's in terms of the places that never stopped cranking out fighters, and evolving.

Some of believe that size matter. In sports yes in a street fight with no rules not. And it's not only weight as they wrongly believe. Weight is one of the lot things. It's also speed , flexibility , technique , agility and at all of those Bruce was superior than all proven. Vic rediculously failed vs his speed test ... And also it couldn't be so stupid Jim Kelly, chuck Norris, dan inosanto, Jackie Chan, even Mike Tyson who respect Bruce Lee. They respect him for a reason.
