L'kha Dodi is the ultimate song with which we welcome the Sabbath: 'Let's go my beloved, to meet the bride, and let us welcome the presence of Shabbat'. This setting of the 16th century poem was composed by Cantor Pinchas Minkowsky (1859-1924) of the Brodsky Synagogue in Odessa. Minkowsky objected to any commercial recordings of synagogue singing and his voice was therefore lost forever. Most of his works survived in manuscripts, and were eventually donated by his family to Israel's National Library. In this performance in Jerusalem a few months ago, several of Minkowsky's works were performed in public for the first time in a hundred years.
I hope that this rare piece, one of Minkowsky's richest and most colorful works, inspires you to welcome the presence of your own Sabbath.
