I had this camera called the Sure Shot Ace in the UK, I bought mine in 1989. I liked the waist level finder, remote control and ergonomics. Some of these cemras would under expose by a lot others would expose correctly. These cameras attracted interest for thier ergonomic styling, If I remember correctly they were styled by Colani who did the Canon T90.

Great idea with a P&S series. I have more than a handful myself including a Minolta Riva Zoom 105i (with auto zoom), that I got a while ago because it was so-called "old new stock" mint in box and still in plastic wrappings inside the box. I plan to test shoot it during my summer vacation time in August. My favorite P&S camera is my Canon Sure Shot WPT - the water proof European version. It has a huge viewfinder (similar to an SLR in size), and you can control the flash, so it has a lot going for it even though it looks a bit like a toy to my eyes. Anyway, I'll look forward to seeing, what you come up with.

Hi there, a quirky Canon sure shot is the Canon zoom xl/autoboy in other countries. It boasts the same lens quality's as fd mount lenses. I have one and I have to say....its not far off for a point and shoot.

Thanks James. I haven't sold it yet, maybe I'll hold onto it a bit longer....I feel like the FD comparison is a bit of a stretch though :)

I enjoy the challenge of trying to get quality shots from P&S cameras - discovering their limitations and optimising their better features - even trying to use filters. I include so-called "disposable" cameras amongst them. There was a great period of film camera miniaturisation in the late 80s/90s (eg Konica A4). Key factor is probably, as always, the lens quality. Looking forward to more of this series.

I started photographing in the late 80'th and ended up with a Nikon F90 and a Contax T2 before I switched to digital. Still have them together with an old Minox GT and the Yashica T4. The T4 was a gift to my parents and I saved it from the garbage when they switched to digital. I think, the GT, T4 and T2 are pretty nice landmarks of the analog point&shoot age. The T4 came with a fantastic prime lens at a time where most point&shoots had ridiculous bad zoom lenses. The T4 and the T2 where praised for the good lenses and among the few cameras that could be used to take slides that be mixed with slides from SLRs.

I liked your photo compositions, the walking statues and doorway with the painted color blocks were the two that stood out for me as favorites. I have never caught on to digital photography, being a 35mm purist, I have mostly shunned the digital format because it is so easily altered. Digital or “digitography” as I call it I’d something I could never fully adopt. Thanks for your channel and am a new subscriber. Cheers!

P&S's are fun and easy (when they work!). I have a lot of different ones. I'm always looking for ones that create a "look" and not super sharp cameras. This was a nice review and I'm looking forward to more.

My 2 favourites are the Olympus Af1 infinity weatherproof camera with the wonderfully sharp Zuiko 35mm f2.8 and the Ricoh Mirai 105. The latter being very versatile and has extremely quirky looks. That Canon you have sounds like a crow croaking when it fires and winds on.

*Good video:* I like the way we don't get to see the photos until after the film has been developed. The ratings all look fair to me. The choice of film stock also seems ideal for this type of camera. It gives great results when the exposure is correct, but as we can see from the video, unless the scene is evenly illuminated, the camera tends to underexpose.

Hey I have one of these! I like it a lot, apart from the auto focus that sounds like a pressure drill😄 Totally agree that the Mju II is overpriced, but the Yashica T4 really is in a completely different league. Might still be overpriced, but nowhere near as much as the Mju II imo.

@@AzrielKnight Kinda, only it doesn't have that nasty looking light-cell ring around the lens like the Trip does. Looking on the bay, they're going for silly money at the moment! One for over 200 GBP although 150 is about average. That's more than I paid for my Nikon FE a month or so ago!

The much cheaper Yashica T3 (compared to the T4) has a top level finder as well, one of the things I liked about, along with a flash override. But the focus was just okay and the vaunted Zeiss lens, while pretty good, didn’t justify the price. Would love to see the Canon Multi Tele on this series. I think a few years later than this one, with a half-frame option. Also love the Canon Z155, which has a personal mode to save setting(like flash off and center point AF). Can’t wait for more episodes!!

Hi, loved this video, excellent idea you had, to pick this cameras and look properly on their work. Although I prefer to use my other cameras, I really enjoy a lot shooting with my Leica Z2X, great image quality and metering as, with my Agfa Optima Sensor 1035, each time I shoot a new film, I became surprised with the very good results I get. Thank you for this and becoming series videos.

I own a Yashica T4 myself and I won't say its worth its crazy asking price but in terms of point and shoots it certainly produces very nice images. I paid a lowly UK£2.50 from the Samaritans charity shop in full working condition. No doubt I'll cash in on its popularity at some point but at least I've now experienced what all the fuss this camera receives.😛

Suggestion: We had one guy on our forum rave about the Canon Sure Shot 115u II ( global.canon/en/c-museum/product/film250.html ), one of canons last 35mm P&S models, so that might be a good future episode. 3:00 True, i've tried the Mju-I and Mju-II which i got for £10 each back when they were still considered junk, shot a couple rolls, wasn't impressed, and gave them away. I've shot many P&S and i learned quick i hate slow hunting auto focus and noisy advance motors that aren't discreet or fast, so my favourite is the Olympus XA3, decent enough lens, quiet, meters well, slide it open and it's good to go right away, simple zone focus, no noisy motors.

Rad concept! Do you consider shutter sound in the appearance category? Minor point but the shutter on this sounds terrible to my ear (completely subjective, of course). I find I dislike most Canon shutter sounds, including the AE-1. I have a lovely mint AE-1 sitting on a shelf in front of me that always get left behind (in favor of an objectively lower quality K1000) because the AE-1's shutter sounds so...weak?
@AzrielKnight
@AzrielKnight 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! Yes the shutter sound plays a role for me but only if it's super loud and draws attention, and while I agree it didn't sound so great, it was, in public, very quiet. I took a few shots with my wife walking with me and she didn't hear it.

Point and shoots, ignored by everyone for years, 'Before Digital' covers quite a lot of them but the main attraction is that he's so charmingly English. I've a box full of different one's I've picked up over the years. The problem with them is that they were made out of such cheap components/materials that they glitch easily and as sealed units you can't get inside yourself to do a bodge of a repair. They were made to just get carried in a bag everywhere you went. They're great whilst they last though. Can't say I'd be prepared to pay more than £20 Sterling for one, certainly not the silly money a few are selling for. I've fallen in love with Kodak Gold, unfortunately its become really difficult to get online in the UK (that goes for film in general). Possibly Covid lockdown lag or post-Brexit importation problems. Certain items are starting to disappear off the shelves of all the stores over here from beef meatballs in a tin to bitter lemon in a bottle. What is civilisation coming to ? 🤷‍♂️

@@AzrielKnight You may be charming, but I don't know many MacDougal's that claim to be English. The guy from 'Before Digital' is most definitely English ..... and charming. Although he taught photography at college level his vlog is really camera based, his photography is, well ..... incidental may be a polite way of putting things; I don't think he's ever claimed to be artistic.
