This is SUCH an awesome tribute. Azula is such a complicated character, and she constantly fascinates me. Her dad's such an asshole *shakes head in shame*; also I love how you focused on her obsession with being "perfect", and how often she lies to others and herself as well. Like how she "doesn't care" that her mom liked zuko more. She's such a product of her upbringing its sad.
@MellanClear7 жыл бұрын
Thank you ! I've always felt that her obsession with being perfect was important to understand her character and her story. Like, the only praise she ever got was for being a prodigy and so that was her only way of getting recognition from her father, and it turned into an obsession with perfection. In the end, she was just as obsessed with pleasing her father as Zuko was...
@FatimaKhan-uy1id5 жыл бұрын
And the fact that Zuko was the one who wasn't appreciated which eventually made him the one to come to his senses and be the fire lord the fire nation needed rly adds to the concept of "fate and destiny" in the show. His scar was a blessing in disguise, as for Azula, she suffered pain and continued to suffer it because she couldn't end her own demons.

Carla Anastas Following her mother’s would be a bad idea... you know, abandoning your children and deciding to erase all your memories of them. When you know their dad is, well, Ozai, and one of them has mental issues and needs help. You don’t just leave a kid with mental issues to evolve into a sociopath. I get that she had to leave, but she never had to erase her memories or favour a child over another. Azula had mental issues, she needed help, not just more fuel for her lack of empathy. Her following after her mother would just be her being an even worse person. She should’ve gotten love, not distance and the manipulation of a horrible man

“Everything always came easy to her.” Azula is so obsessed with achieving perfection that she regards her own flawless performance unacceptable if she has even a hair out of place. She works tirelessly to accomplish her father’s goals with utmost precision and efficiency, all without a shred of affection or a single loving parent or mentor, and with the clear understanding that failure will be rewarded with the kind of cruelty Ozai visited on Zuko. No prodigy achieves greatness without heroic effort and hard work. If Azula was born lucky, it was the worst thing that ever happened to her. Your video reminded me of all this! It was beautifully edited and I’m so glad it showed up in my feed. c8 Thank you for putting in the hard work, creativity, and skill to create it!

Weird but, the part of this edit that really got to me was the juxtaposition between her insane cackling at the last Agni Kai and her laughing with Chan on Ember Island. It really illustrates that she's really just a lost 14-year-old girl who could've had something of a normal life if the adults let it happen. (The two would-be positive influences on her, Ursa and Iroh, were too intimidated by her to be of any help, and Ozai ... well, need I say more? The man MADE her a monster.)

Azula's story was the saddest in my opinion. Aang lost Gyatso and the rest of the Air Nomads, but he had Katara, Sokka, Toph, Appa and Momo to fill that void. Katara lost her mother, but she had Sokka, Aang, Toph, Hakoda, Pakku, and Kanna Sokka lost Yue, but he had Katara, Aang, Toph, Suki, Hakoda, Pakku and Kanna Toph had parents that loved her but treated her like she was made of glass. She had Katara, Sokka, and Aang who saw how tough she really was. Zuko had an abusive father and lost his mother, but he had the knowledge that she loved him as well as Iroh and Mai. Azula had a father she wanted to live up to, but always ended up coming up short. Zuko, Ty Lee and Mai betray her. She lives most of her life believing that her mother thought she was a monster.

@MellanClear7 жыл бұрын
I agree, and I think that's what makes their final Agni Kai so heartbreaking : we see in Azula what Zuko almost became, but we also see in Zuko what Azula might have been, had things been different...
@MrFredde99997 жыл бұрын
Yes! I don't know if you've read the follow up manga series but the parents seem to play a big role in how they became who they are, cuz the psycho father loved and believed in Azula where as the good spirited mother loved and believed in Zuko.
@MellanClear7 жыл бұрын
Yes I have read them and I agree ! Although I think some people blame Ursa too much for what Azula became : Ursa saw her daughter turning into this evil being like her father was and she tried to stop it, whereas Zuko was just sweet (he didn't really have his father's bad influence since it was Azula who got all the attention from him) so of course she got on better with him, and she blamed Azula when she said horrible things, like talking about Iroh dying, like, well you should do as a good parent. She really did care for Azula, they make that very clear in Smoke and Shadows I think... Ozai is really the one who f***** all his family up.
@MrFredde99997 жыл бұрын
I agree that it was inevitable to happen because of Ozai. But I do think Ursa could have tried a little more since she literally just snapped at her daughter asking herself "whats wrong with that child" instead of really trying to talk to her. I know it probably wouldn't have made much difference at that point but I think a parent should always keep fighting for her child.
@MellanClear7 жыл бұрын
Yeah she probably should have, but as you said, it wouldn't have made any difference. Or Azula could even have talked to her dad about it, and then Ursa would be the one in trouble for "talking nonsense" to her daughter, or trying to make her "weak" like Zuko (and we don't see much of what she went through as Ozai's wife, but the little bits and pieces that we see are not very encouraging...) But I can't really believe she never tried to talk to her, I think she did, we just don't see that much of their pasts :/ it's probably up to interpretation at this point and you can chose what you want to believe. :)

In avatar no 2 women are the same {apart from Joo dee} and it doesn't portray femininity as weak unlike other "strong female character show" where the main character is masculine and hates femininity. It also doesn't try to bring down men as stupid or less powerful like the "strong female character show". Some of the women beat men, some of the men beat women. They treat women as characters first. They make them strong characters who happen to be female rather than strong character who is strong because she is a woman. As well as avatar women have complicated backstories unlike other strong female protagonist.
