I just adore you !! you have such a calming effect somehow, I wish I could learn diving from you ! you're such a gifted teacher who clearly loves to teach ! I wish more people would be like you, I remember my first attempt at a class and a poor guy got yelled at so badly because he was so scared to jump in the open water that he started to have a panic attack on the boat itself ! then all the way back she kept yelling at him calling him all the names you can think of, mocking him and publicly shaming him... And this has to be the hardest part of the job, even after years of diving and teaching to still remember how crucial that first dive is for people and how terrifying it can be til they grow the confidence to start exploring more, but then just how rewarding is it to see people pass those tresholds and mental blockages ! I think if people can't take joy out seeing others reaching even the smallest of milestones, they should not become instructors or teachers of any kind in any field for that matter, so thank you for being you and for making all these great videos !! I absolutely love them and love your take on the matter !

I was certified back in 1975 and all I was ever taught at the time was that your boyancy was simply a matter of using your BC to compensate for what your weight belt was doing to you,and the BC inflated to just the right level takes care of everything. Never once was the idea of putting weights anywhere other than the weight belt ever discussed.On one dive in very cold water my regulator started free flowing. I was at 60 feet and did not have a clue what to do about the situation other than to breathe normal and come up extremely slowly, which I did. That was 46 years ago, so obviously I finished the dive with no ill effects, but not because I really knew what I was doing. The subject of what to do with a free flowing regulator was never discussed in my basic scuba course. Of course this was a very long time ago, and I would imagine all training for divers has improved tremendously since then.
@AzulUnlimited3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that sounds like rough times for scuba diving.... things has been improving a lot regarding equipment and teaching techniques, new divers are more prepared to face common problems related with their level of training but also diving in similar conditions.

I love watching these videos. I'm relatively new; I was diving before certification in what we called "Intro dives" up in northern Aust (the Great barrier reef etc) and ended up getting my cert coz they charge more if you're not certified. I didn't know a lot of things. I mean, when you get your cert, you only really do the particular skill 2 or 3 times, but for people like me who are NOT naturally athletic, I need practice. I've logged on a lot more dives than some advanced divers right now, but I still consider myself a noob. I don't know how to swim backwards, away from coral so when I try to flap the hands to push back, people think I have buoyancy issues! The only good thing about me is my trim is perfect; or great. And I don't do bicycle kicks... my air consumption is low but I still need to work out my buoyancy as most of my dives are in warmer waters so I struggle with buoyancy when I do have a suit on. I will be diving soon with an advanced mate; I hope he can teach me some stuff like doing the buoyancy test at the surface. The problem is that when you go on the dive trips, there's no opportunity to take your time. Every thing is go go go and everyone's always in a rush.

That’s a great point. It might be helpful to get with an instructor to work on those things or if you have access to a pool, book some time to practice there. Thank you for watching the videos and let me know if I can help!

Hi Sarah, I find it somewhat unexpected that you mentioned new divers struggle with achieving proper trim. This shouldn't be the case if the instructor is dedicating enough time to educate them on proper weighting and trimming them out before anything else. In case of brand new beginner divers it's the instructors responsibility to sort them out without exception so the good advice would be that if you are beginner diver and look like a seahorse underwater then go back to your instructor and either ask your money back or let them finish their actual job.
@AzulUnlimited Жыл бұрын
Totally agree, but sometimes we switch gear (exposure suits, tank size/material) and get confused why trim is messed up, so it's good to know what one of the issues could be (being overweighted).
@edbise25483 жыл бұрын
If you do the buoancy check as described at the beginning of your dive with full tanks and an empty BC, you will not be able stay down with as your tanks gain buoancy as you consume air. The prescribed procedure works at the end of the dive with empty tanks almost empty.
@AzulUnlimited3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, once you get some experience, that's the proper way to do it but for beginners and specially for teaching Open Water divers we found easier and more effective to start with the buoyancy check in the beginning of the dive and at the end too after a few dives! Thanks for the tip tho!!
@jonnieinbangkok3 жыл бұрын
After passing through the novice diver stage, there is no real reason to have most of one's weight be dump-able. For this to be the case, it has to be on a weight belt or BC pockets on the waist/hip area and this leads to bad trim. 2/3rds of my weight are attached to my double cam straps on my cylinder, and definitely not dump-able, and the other third in dump-able pockets on both sides of my BC waist belt. Dumping 1/3rd of my weight at depth I can still make a controlled assent to the surface and at the surface, if I need additional bouncy dumping them should be sufficient.

Every time I was thinking 'ah but you have to mention xyz too', you went and did it in the next sentence. I laughed about the skinny butt weight belt problem, which happened to me on my first drysuit dive and by 15 metres it was round my thighs. That doesn't do much for your trim! The only other one I could think of for new divers is actually as much one for their instructors: making sure you don't have a wayward octopus, SPG etc that's going to drag on the reef or fill with sand.

2 Tricks for How to fix trim.... Trick 1 - Dump the Jacket single band BCDs. Most people do not need a lot of weight, if any. most my students use less then 4lbs. Dual Band BCDs allow you to position your tank high and lower with better consistency. While a BP/W allow you to adjust your Bladder higher and low. Trick 2.... FINS. Depending on the dive or tanks I change from a heavy fin to a light fin. In twin 100s i need use a heavy fin, in twin 120's I need a lighter fin. This helps raise and lower your feet. Bonus tip... Check your buoyancy at the end of the dive around 500psi. We keep 2 AL80s at the pool so our divers test this day 1. Remember, on an al80, goes positive buoyant around 900psi.

You missed out one critical point in the Weight Check for point #1. After you have done the weight check as you described, you need to add onto that weight the weight of the air in your tank. For example, if you did your weight check with a full 80 tank (11 Liter) at 3000 psi, the air contained in the tank weighs about 5.5 pounds (2.5 kg). If your weight check came up with 10 pounds as the answer, then you would need to add 5.5 pounds to give you 15.5 pounds as the final amount of weight to wear. This compensates for the loss of weight as you use up your air. If you did not add this "air" weight, then by the end of the dive you would be underweighted and fighting to keep yourself from floating up to the surface. Keep in mind that different tank sizes with different working pressures contain different "weights" of air when full.

And the fact that the weight you carry also depends on the dive you are doing: if you have to be able to lie still on the ground in 1m of water, with current and wave action (for photography, for example), you will have to go seriously overweight. And if it is very cold while diving a dry suit, you should add another kilo or two of lead so that you can inflate your dry suit more and stay warmer.

I recently got certified, and i was wondering if i should add my first dive computer to my kit? I plan on doing alot of diving this summer (all shallow reef dives) and I thought it might be beneficial to have one of my own so i can get used to it in a relaxed environment, but I've also been told i dont need one for the type of diving im doing?
@AzulUnlimited3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Well, a dive computer or any other way to control the dive is necessary, either a watch and diving tables plus deep gauge, or the best option a diving computer. Today you can find very good computers at a really good price, and with all the basic you need, like Nitrox compatible or even integrated compass, check out Suunto Zoop or maybe the video we have about the Peregrine, but Suunto or Cressy Leonardo are great options for about 200$. Just make sure you understand your computer, if you go diving soon just check with the instructor and ask them to show you underwater how the computer works and the benefits. Let me know if you have any more questions once you check out some computers!

Depends on your equipment, type of dive. It isn't just about being at eye level & going down when you exhale, or being able to stay down at your shallow stop with near empty tank. It's also: steel vs alu tank.... Cold vs tropical dive (Thickness of suit), depth you plan to dive.... Plan for possible failures at the most inconvenient time (depth) Can you swim up from depth (lets say 30m/98ft) when your BCD fails? With a 80cf alu, and a 3mm holiday suit, your tank is almost neutral, your suit requires minimal weights. Easy! It's a 10lbs swim. .... With a double 7mm cold water suit, you need a lot of weights to get under, but at depth, the air bubble in the suit are compressed. A steel 12L tank is much heavier. If you do deep dives, maybe double 12L. Now you need to try and swim up with 10kg/22lbs or with the double: 14kg/30lbs

I dive slightly negatively buoyant. It's just a personal preference. When I was a relatively inexperienced diver the DM on the boat I was on in Maui convinced me to dive with too little weight and I was looking for rocks to hold on to at the bottom at Molokini crater. As cool as Hawaii is, it was not what I would consider a fun dive.

Hi Max!! Molokini is on my bucket list of dives to do!! and I totally agree, better to be negative and add air as you need than go on a rock hunt to keep yourself underwater, I normally carry a zip plastic bag on my pocket and if needed and is not rocks around, you can fill it up with sand. I suffer form the culo carpeta. I'm six feet tall and weigh around 290 and my girlfriend tells me I have a flat ass. So, she bought me suspenders...... lol

In the 1980's I remember my instructor telling us 130' was an absolute limit or horrible things will happen. As a cave diver, I have LITERALLY done dives where my 1st deco stop was 130!

I would say scuba divers don't do anything wrong, they just don't do it right. Waterproof log book. Probably cost more than the dive. Your vid proves most Instructors are incompetent.

dont forget chasing a new certification every other month and not actually spending time to build your real skills and experience before moving on to higher skills.

Noticed you were in California for the last few videos, apologies if you answered this previously. Is this a permanent move or temporary due to the pandemic? Regardless, keep up the great work.

Not sure yet! Indonesian borders still close for international tourism and we don't have any dates about when will reopen. Aitor is there keeping the company safe and sharp, working on boat maintenance, equipment, compressor and local marketing while I'm in California helping to support the company financially. Difficult times but we will be back to track soon! Thanks for your comment tho.

You look like a deep soul who is not discussing deep subjects at least not here. Deep souls should be attracted to gaining liberating knowledge in their lifetime. You look like you could understand advanced teachings but it takes cultivating in this lifetime rather than just existing from last lifetimes gains. Past life experiences are karma but are called prarabdaha karma meaning past life karmas manifesting now. Creating karma now one experiences it in the future.
