Great video. You're very brave! Mono Lake is both beautiful and creepy. I went there around 4am in the winter (before skying) to take some long exposures before sunrise. It was scary in the pitch black, there was no cell service, and the bog was frozen. Like an idiot, I was wearing Vans... I almost lost one of them in the frozen bog. But I got some cool pics though 😀

Thanks. That was very interesting. I've visited Mono Lake several times but didn't know people swim there too. I like that you pronounce it "mahno" lake. I do too, maybe because I'm from the east. When I lived in Bishop, CA, a little south of there, people said I should call it "moeno" lake. I guess it's just a regional difference but it was hard to not say mahno. 🤙

Recommend you research the arsenic levels. East of Reno is Fallon where the water is alkaline and the arsenic level was above drinking standards , the city was under pressure forever to get the arsenic down to acceptable levels.

When I was there Dec 2022; I was told that we cannot use reef hooks or gloves in the park. It did make those drift dives harder.
@AzulUnlimitedКүн бұрын
Yeah I don’t usually use them. I find that people end up breaking the reef more bc they’re not as careful where they grab on. I will say, they were helpful for people who were nervous and/or struggled with the current. A sort of emotional support reef hook🤣

I bathe in Mono Lake daily. I also pipe the water from Mono Lake to my shack, which I use for cooking and cleaning. I have lots of rashes all over my body, but It's okay, because rashes make me feel alive. The End.

How come there's no beach foam along the shoreline? I've not been there since 2005, but during then and the 90s I was there a lot and there was always foam out to 20 feet from the shore

I have visited the Mono Lake area many times when I have been on vacation at Mammoth Lakes. I have walked up close to the shore to look at the alkali flies and saw many birds feeding on the alkali flies. I have also been to the visitor center at Mono Lake. I also learned that in years past native american people that lived near Mono Lake used to collect alkali fly larva. Then dry them out and eat them as food.

Yup...... I did that back in 1971.... in a burst of stupidity, I jumped in and swam about ten strokes.... annnnnd immediately turned around and ran on top of the water to get back to the shore. ow, indeed.. Mark Twain has a whole chapter on Mono Lake in "Roughing It" that is well worth the read.

The slippery is the alkaline water converting the fats on the surface of your skin into soap. Lye will dissolve animals entirely if you use enough of it.

I could probably handle the flies and the shrimps and the salty, but the alkaline water slowly dissolving my body would probably discourage me unless a grizzly bear was chasing me.

Curious but not changing from back mount, my BC was $700 Canadian. Which is more streamlined in current? Back or side mount? What happens with a single side mount scenario if you lose or have to dump your weight? With my back tank I can use ankle weights or a tank weight besides belt or pocket weights. Does being unique with a single side tank as complicated as reinventing the wheel? It confuses me and in a rescue scenario could I react to a side mounted diver in distress quickly enough? Not expecting a reply but I'm an older diver somewhat confused. I get people like to be unique and try new things like bungee jumping for instance. Fun to watch but not going there myself.

I had a hard time following your sidemount explanations. Too bad you didn't have a blowup doll ( or do you lol) to dress in your BC with a tank for demonstration explanation instruction. Sorry but I do find part of my comment funny. (wouldn't take up much room in the van and may actually be helpful when traveling alone.

"Mono" in Mono Lake is pronounced as "MOH-noh." The first syllable is pronounced like "mow" (as in mowing the lawn), and the second syllable is pronounced like the "no" in "note."

When I lived in L.A. I always wanted to get up to Mono Lake and take pictures. Had a couple of photography friends tell me it was worth the trip, but to go in the early Spring time to minimize the flies swarming you. Never thought about diving in the lake, but the shots you got from the water of some of the Tufa structures were cool. Great job of toughing it out and making this video happen.

Hi I just subbed. New to scuba diving. What camera do you use or suggest I use for my dives? Thanks in advance!
@AzulUnlimited3 күн бұрын
Thanks for the sub! I use the Sony ZV1. Honestly, I would suggest concentrating on diving first and getting better as buoyancy, trim, and air consumption before adding any task loading like taking video or pictures. After that, the camera you decide will depend on the type of video or pictures you want to take. You can go simple with a GoPro, use your mobile phone with a housing made for phones or get more elaborate with either point-and-shoots or dSLR cameras. The sky really is the limit. Thanks again for subscribing!

I went and it was really cool the oils in your skin are sucked out and make the water hazy and you are really buoyant…. Definitely do it but it’s strange experience … I went it near a fresh water stream to wash off it … that was a good call

I made an attempt just recently to make it to the island in the center of mono lakec . No wind and glassey conditions. The padel out was easy as that high salt content made paddling effortlessly. Got within striking distance but the wind began to make itself know . I heard of the potential for the wind so I turned back . I was disappointed . I made my way back maybe halfway and a substantial wind and waves came up and saturated by the waves . It was a bit worrisome but I made it back . Took a swim after . I actually enjoyed the water on my skin . It felt soothing . I took a couple dives underwater with no ill affects.
