The B-1 is magnificent to see live. I got chills seeing it at an airshow. You can't help but think of the hundreds of thousands of parts all working perfectly together built by American craftsmen. So sleek and fast, almost tiger-like.

The B-1 Lancer is the most beautiful curvy aircraft, it reminds me of an E type Jaguar and an Aston Martin DB9 .
@WildPhotoShooter4 жыл бұрын
@Arole Flynn Yes the beautiful Aston Martin, the DB9 is my favourite but I'm a bit disappointed in the new Aston Martin , it looks too angular, it has lost it's elegant curves. If I could afford one I wouldn't be buying the latest model, I'd go to Bentley now. In my dreams. :-)
@WildPhotoShooter4 жыл бұрын
@Arole Flynn Oh DB9 in silver, yes indeed, that is perfection, smooth curves do seem to look best in silver. I did see a DB9 in British Racing Green in an Ikea car park ( they weren't buying a wardrobe I'm sure) and it looked gorgeous but silver wins every time. Do you remember what Jeremy Clarkson said when comparing a Ferrari with a DB9 ? Turn up for a date in a Ferrari and she will think "show off" and "flashy" . Turn up in an Aston Martin DB9 and she will leave her husband for you. Brilliant !

Of the three main strategic bombers in the USAF I've got to say the B-1 is certainly the most impressive. It might not be as big as the B-52 and not as stealthy as the B-2, but seeing a massive strategic bomber not only look like a fighter but even fly like one is certainly incredible to watch. Also, notice their choice in music that they're playing at the show? Interesting that they chose the soundtrack from Aliens.

Night of Aircraft Type Assignment for new pilots: "Lieutenant Smith, we know you wanted F-15s, but you're getting B-1B." Lt Smith: "Oh yeah? Watch this!"
@clkersting4 жыл бұрын
I served from 88-92 and my first assignment was with the 96th Bomb Wing at Dyess AFB in Abilene, TX. Reagan was president and Strategic Air Command was alive and well. Watching this pilot "Hot Dogging" the B-1 reminds me of the pilot who decided to fly his B-52 like an F-16, which ultimately resulted in a crash and the death of the crew. I believe it was in 90's at an airshow in (Washington State?) I'm not saying it's right or wrong, or it is or is not designed to do that, but I never witness a B-1 maneuvering like that during my tour. I'm thinking this pilot was called on the carpet!

I think this was a normal air show maneuvers I seen the b1 do the same show in the mid 90s at luke airforce base
@Hin113 жыл бұрын
Craig, I was at Dyess flying the B-1 from '86-'91 when it was assigned to SAC. I returned in '95-'97 and we were assigned to ACC. BIG difference in Command philosophy on how to fly the aircraft and what you could and could not do. SAC was much more conservative in its approach to manuvering the aircraft.

I feel so blessed that I was brought up on Air Force bases from being born to 16 years old, and all the air shows we went to was the icing on the cake. The B1 always reminds me of the ugly duckling story, looking a little awkward and ungainly with wings stretched out but once swept back she turned into such a beautiful swan.

I live at the point where the B2 Spirit bombers coming out of Whiteman AFT Missouri have attained enough altitude that they make their turn and start the climb to cruising altitude. Because the exhaust is on top of the wing, they are actually very quiet until they turn and pull the nose up, then everything rattles.

B-52H and the B-1B are sharing Close Air Support (CAS) coverage in Western Asia. The B-52 flys "in country" waiting for calls for support while the B-1Bs are at home catching up on maintenance etc, then the B-1Bs rotate in while the B-52H rotates out. It's amazing that the B-1B has a 477,000 pound Max TakeOff Weight(MTOW) compared with the B-52H having a 488,000 pound MTOW. The B-1B is down 11,000 pounds MTOW but can do barrel rolls at the end of a high speed pass which begins at 6:40 of the video. Although the B-1B Lancer has a lower MTOW, it actually carries 10,000 more pounds of payload than the B-52H does, 75,000 pounds for B-1B vs approx. 70,000 pounds of payload for the B-52H There's 120,000 pounds of thrust being produced with all 4 General Electric F-101-102 turbofans in maximum afterburner/reheat/augmentation. As of June 2019, less than 10 of the fleet of 62 aircraft are mission capable.(the exact number was reported as a "single digit out of a fleet of 62 B-1B" jets Apparently B-1B crews have to fly OTHER aircraft in order to get their requisite number of flying hours for the month. "The B-1B is one of three heavy bombers in the U.S. Air Force. Among the three types-B-1B Lancer, B-52H Stratofortress, and B-2 Spirit-the B-1B is the only non-nuclear capable bomber. The Air Force is supposed to have 157 bombers in operation, but the B-1B readiness problems take at least 52 bombers out of that total. The readiness rate for the B-52H and B-2 is unknown." You can be assured that if the B-1B was still a nuclear weapon delivery system, just like the B-2 Spirit or B-52H is, that there would be more money for maintenance to keep the mission capable rate for the fleet higher than 9 mission capable out of a full fleet of 63. www.popularmechanics.com/military/aviation/a27758696/b-1-bomber-readiness/ Not only is American strategic warplanes having issues with Mission Capability(M/C), the USAF/US Navy/USMC are having big issues with their tactical aircraft as well. "Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis has ordered the Air Force and Navy to get mission capable rates for four key tactical aircraft up above 80 percent by the end of next September, a daunting challenge given the current readiness rates of America’s fighter fleets."October 2018-some 10 months ago). "Specific to tactical aircraft, the F-16C fleet reported a mission capable rate of 70.22 percent, the just-standing-up F-35A a 54.67 percent mission capable rate, F-22 Raptor a shocking 49.01 mission capable rate. While not covered by Mattis’ memo, the F-15C (71.24 percent) and F-15E (75.26 percent) were also below the threshold now sought by the secretary." www.defensenews.com/air/2018/10/09/mattis-orders-fighter-jet-readiness-to-jump-to-80-percent-in-one-year/

I worked at Rockell NAA in long beach california next to the long beach airport and a B1 bomber was on static display for a weekend air show the B1 crew waited until monday morning when the employees were working to do a tribute takeoff. There was a golf course between the plant and airport so we could not see B1 on runway but you could hear the engines building thrust. The pilot took off hot at low altitude with full afterburners and just clear the palm trees then dipped the wing you could feel the thrust against your chest rattled all the windows broke a few FAA rules that day but thrilled the Rockwell employees amazing experience.
