That B-1 has to be the most beautiful airplane ever made. I absolutely love that thing.

Such a muscular and svelte looking airframe. I remember seeing one at the now much missed Mildenhall airshow. We were troubled by the low cloud base early on so they moved the schedule about and sent it up to do its party piece. Came in quietly in a shallow dive but must have been close to the speed of sound because as it levelled out it formed a perfect condensation doughnut around the fuselage. I was so blown away I completely failed to get the photo.

I work at an airport for 30+ years. Saw a variety of fighter aircraft over those years do touch and goes, take offs and landings and stop overs. I was working a flight one day and heard an unfamiliar engine sound behind me. Looked to see a B-1B making a low pass over the runway then kick in the afterburners as it climbed out. It was a cloudy day so the burner flame was all the more prominent. Awesome sight.

.... as least they got new padded chin rest. i was a KC-135 boom from 1979-1986. barely had any padding in the covers. ... bringing back memories. nice job boom. now let me here you say it.... "BOOM STOWED, LEAVING POSITION."

The B1 is a beautiful aircraft, yes. Concordes weren't half bad, either. I was lucky enough to fly on 2 of them in the early 80's. Mach 2 at 60,000 feet! I remember it like it was yesterday

Finally at the end do you see this awesome aircraft use its swept wing capability. It doesn't carry any defensive weapons so it relies on pure speed just barely feet off the ground. It gets that speed by sweeping the wings back allowing for less drag and then it's afterburner time.

There's a B1-B at the Air Force Museum at Hill AFB, and I used to sit and stare at it, admiring the design and allowing my imagination to put me in the pilot's seat as we break the sound barrier.

As I watch this I am questioning whether I regret not joining the Air Force. I dreamed of flying a fighter jet when I was a kid, but I realized later that I wasn't cut out for that. I don't regret giving up that dream, but I think I do regret not considering other roles such as passing fuel out of the back of a KC-130. The job may not be as thrilling but they get to see some spectacular sights.

What an awesome war-bird. Some say it's too expensive and has to have too much work-up time, but unlike the B-52, this monster rolls overland at 300 feet altitude at a thousand miles per.. Not your everyday chicken to say the least. The enemies of this nation shit their pants when they even think about the hundred of them that are on the line night and day.

Operational costs and maintenance times are actually now slightly lower for the B-1B than for the current B-52 and both are far lower than for the B-2.

The A- was designed to come in high and fast and drop its nukes, when Soviet missiles and radar countered, the B model was designed to come in low and slow under the radar. After 1995 the Bone no longer carried nukes.Big assed jet, that looks impressive as it performs barrel rolls. Not many big planes can do that.

It is the 28th Bomb Wing. I can't remember the bomb squadrons they had back then. Now they have the 34th & 37th Bomb Squadrons. Ellsworth was also part of the 15th Air Force Command and now it is part of the 8th Air Force.

@shotgun377

+danahan01 No, it is currently not retractable. You're correct about the RCS but you have to look at the enemy being fought. RCS is not a consideration in the last 13 years of conflict.

Are these aircraft on the computer to keep airspeed exact, if not, you have to hand it to the pilot's control. Okay, now have there ever been in mishaps during refueling that brought down or impaired an aircraft?
@stupidburp
@stupidburp 7 жыл бұрын
They rely on pitot tubes to get precise pressure measurements and compute airspeed. Control for aerial refueling is by gentle touch from the pilot and it is difficult. There have been a number of mishaps with aerial refueling. I can think of at least one that resulted in enough damage that it led to a crash. In 2016 A V-22 Osprey damaged a rotor when it hit the hose or drogue and the pilots tried to make an emergency landing in shallow water before the rotor failed completely. Unfortunately the aircraft landed on an area where it was uneven and rocky under the water and broke apart.
