More than a dozen World War II B-25 Mitchell bombers convened at Oshkosh, Wisconsin, during EAA AirVenture 2017 to honor the 75th anniversary of the Doolittle raid. Eight of the B-25s launched during the warbird show on Tuesday, 25 July, and flew two circular rat race patterns over the show area. Occasionally, one can glimpse one of two B-29 Superfortresses in the distance, waiting their cue to enter the show pattern later. The raucous B-25 effort provided a sensory glimpse into the wartime world of B-25 crews, including the 16 crews of the Doolittle mission who launched from the deck of the aircraft carrier USS Hornet to deliver the first bombs on Japan in World War II on 18 April 1942. Richard Cole, who was Doolittle's copilot on that historic mission, attended AirVenture this year as well.
