Sounds amazing, Jeff! One thing I noticed, though, is that you ride the neck with your thumb while executing the vibrato tones. BB always did this with the thumb way out in space, using the full mass of the hand, rotating from the wrist. I saw him doing the move in an interview once and he made mention of it. When I try to get the "BB" sound, I concentrate on this method. Maybe I am just imagining the sound, but I can hear a subtle difference in the tones. Not ragging on you, because you're damn good, but maybe you can hear a difference, too.

The most recognizable sound in blues period!!!!
@larrygeetar93096 жыл бұрын
Very nice, Jeff. BB's vibrato is so distinct, also not easy to duplicate. He developed it because he loved the sound of the old timers with their bottleneck style on resonator guitars. BB's quote: "My stupid fingers couldn't play like that, so I had to find a way to make the notes sound similar to theirs. Like a voice." I think he may have been the first blues player to use finger vibrato extensively. And taking his hand off the guitar except for that index finger was certainly his trademark. You do a great job interpreting BB's vibrato. B.B. King will always be King of The Blues. And he could say so much with one note! The essence of "less is more."

Great succinct video with nice explanations of where they are coming from (example Minor adding the major note and back to minor) which mean I can duplicate them/move them much more easily as I continue to learn. Thanks!

Brilliant and so informative, thanks for sharing. Incidentally, I recall reading recently where one noted guitar player (so noted his name slips my mind) stated that this style of vibrato was very 80"s and sort of USA West Coast style and has now been replaced by a more subtle approach. Words to that effect anyway. Of course I totally disagree and love this full loose wristed movement that for me allows more control and variation. Hope I'm not too far off track....I really enjoyed this vid.
@larrygeetar93096 жыл бұрын
+beachfrontman Calling this very 80's and West Coast style is rather foolish. This is the B.B King style! You're correct in disagreeing with that. B.B. had 30 years head start on those 80's boys, after all.

Really really well explained!!This only applies to a major 7th chord though right??not any minor chords?
@codypenn78346 жыл бұрын
You could use a major third as a passing tone for a minor chord. However, landing on the major third works for both major 7th and dominant 7th chords since they both contain the major third interval.
@guyguyguyjean6 жыл бұрын
Cody Penn thanks for that i will work on it !Cheers!

+Cody Penn Interesting that B.B did use the major third as a passing tone in minor blues. The Thrill Is Gone is a good example, especially in those intro licks. He lands on or bends to it, then goes through it.

I read in an interview with B.B. King that the original Lucile was a Gibson ES 330, and I believe it burnt up in a barn fire, where he was playing music. He tried to go back and save it, but was unsuccessful so he called his guitars Lucille to remind he never to go back in a fire and risk his life. Those are as close to what I remember him saying out of his own mouth.
@isaiahburridgemusic6 жыл бұрын
mike potts He rescued the guitar and named it Lucille to remind him never to do something that stupid again. It did not burn up. It was stolen years later.

@Subatomic_Glue3 жыл бұрын
Music is about creation. Creation is infinite and varied, calling a certain type of music "awful" is limiting and ignorant. Music isn't about limitation, and it sounds different to all that listen. Celebrate whatever you enjoy listening to, never discriminate other genres because it isn't your preference. If that were the case we would have never gotten to the point of a Robert Johnson playing "devil's music."
