I'm 72, when I was in fourth grade the Boston & Maine main line was right behind my school. Every morning before the first bell the Portland to Boston " Budd Liner" would go by and all of us kids would wave to the Engineer, sometimes he'd tweek the horn for us!

Thanks for the info, we had a couple down here in Australia. Not the same but similar. Cheers.

My special needs son loves trains especially RDC'S like that one! He thinks they are highly underrated rail transportation vehicles and all should be preserved, restored, and put back into service carrying both passengers and mail on lines that are not used anymore and/or don't get passenger service. He also thinks that Siemens, Progress Rail, or any other company that builds railroad equipment should build full size working replicas of RDC's and the departments of transportation should restore and rebuild railroad lines that were abandoned and/or removed and run these on them!

They're definitely underrated! We would love to see RDC's get more recognition and would definitely be on-board for restoration of abandoned railroad lines to show them off!

My freind and l's late B&O engineer friend Mr. C.P. Barker told us that he operated as many as twelve units at once. Rode these with my B&O GrandDad Mr. C.H. Neighbors many times...

The Reading and Northern Railroad has several restored RDC’s and runs them regularly on their passenger specials to various points on their railroad. Check their schedule for when they run.

I have ridden on many different RDC’S in the Philadelphia area. The Reading Railroad like the B&O used these cars on their non electrified longer passenger routes. One of their routes was from Philadelphia and Newark, NJ. While it was not a full sit down dining car type. Reading had a section on one of the RDC’S that provided light food and drinks northbound and drinks and snack type food southbound on their train called the Wall Streeter that usual ran with three RDC’S. Otherwise they were the usual coach type of RDC cars. They also were used on the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines in south Jersey where they ran together to some points like Ocean City, NJ and Cape May and separated along the way making them into two separate trains at that point. They also where New Jersey trains ran rather fast since the south Jersey land was flat and had few curves. They were a pleasure to ride but like the B&O were eventually retired under SEPTA and NJ Transit.

I used to see these Budd RDCs running the line from DC to Martinsburg WVa for MARC in the 90s while I would stay at Hilltop House in Harpers Ferry.

Rode them on VIA in Canada in the late 1980s n the Montreal to Quebec City routes. Sadly our consist had a snack bar in our second car - long out of service.

Did not have any Budd RDC cars in my area of Ohio, only had an Interurban system; Lake Shore Electric Railway. Would be nice to have RDC or Interurban trains again.

Sad that these cars had such a short service life.

I would have liked a bit more time on the cab. Bedford, MA has an RDC on display but I haven't had the chance to look at it.

The 1960 and 1961 also have baggage compartments, which were not mentioned in the voiceover.

The RDC's had 2 engines mounted under the floor and they weren't in a "V" configuration.

I believe it was an inline 6 mounted on it side to save vertical height.

The Detroit Diesel Series 110, with 110 cubic inches displacement per cylinder, was introduced in 1945 as more-powerful alternative to the existing Series 71 engines. It was used in a variety of applications, including construction equipment, marine propulsion and power generation. The most popular use was in the Budd RDC self-powered rail car. It was also heavily used in Euclid construction machinery. In 1951 a marine version was also introduced.
