The 197 is like a Fender, the York like a Gibson

But prokofiev wrote this piece with a large BBb in mind... in fact gene pokorny himself usually plays this piece on a BBb

The Nirschel almost sounds too aggressive on this excerpt compared to the Melton. I think for Prokofiev 5 the tuba sound should not get to the edgy side of the sound and maintain the smoothness through the line which in this video the Melton achieved where the Nirschel did not as easily.

They both sound great, but the 197 with 4 valves can't play C1 nor B1, while the CC with 5 valves can. And that is critical for pieces like Thus Spake Zarathustra.

Uncompensated 4V BBb instruments also have serious intonation issues on B1 (the one right below C2 and above the 2nd partial, you probably meant B0), E1, Eb1, and Db1. The Eb in particular is basically unusable without a huge slide pull. I would never buy a 4V tuba, there are far to many compromised notes in the low register.

@@seth094978 i transitioned from s rudy meinl 5/4 CC to a Fafner rotary 4 valve b flat... let me tell you my fafner is the best horn ive ever played and it has no issues on the low e flat as 1-3-4

I think that both Tubas sound the same. Sometimes the player could make the Tuba sound the same or different.

Why do you find it necessary to move the sides as much as you do ?? is that tuba that badly out of tune or is it more of just a habit ?

Steven Noel it’s a matter of proper intonation. No tuba is perfectly in tune for every note. That is because the overtone series notes aren’t always in tune. By moving the slides, especially the first one, you can get the Notes better in tune. That in combination with alternate fingerings, make for a much better in tune performance.

I know my commet is bit late but moving 1st slide of B tuba you can skip by simply using 3rd valve on contra G, G, D, g, d etc... h (B flat) tunig well on this tuba in 12. In germany you can see mooving first slide much less... I thing in west it is quite moda rather than practical thing :D

Who really cares what it looks like. If it’s in tune and sounds great then by all means pull slides to make it happen.

The first valvem when played alone, lowers the pitch one step from the open tones, but whe played with another valve in combination, such as the 3rd valve doesn't add quite enough tubing to produce a note in tune. Su when playing a note ysing 2 or more valves, it is necessary to stretch the total length of the tubing to get the note in tune. Just like the thumb ring on a trumpet, which also is used for a combination of valves. Physics.
