Both are good. But for "The Ride of the Valkyries" I prefer the M-W 197 Kaiser BBb tuba. The lowest notes are a bit fatter on the 'Kaiser', and the tone is more even from bottom to top.

Iprefer more rounded sounds like wider not so punchy. So no surprise I´m voting Nirschl. :)

I definitely prefer the sound of the nirschl. The larger bell flare fills up the hall so much more than that of the 197. Still, both sound incredible!

I feel the opposite. I made my way around Eastman on a Rudy meinl 5/4 BBb and a meinl Weston fafner. I strongly believe in the superiority of the kaisertuba

As always: C tuba more detail less fat sound (easier for soft passages). B flat less detail, more bass sound. I prefer C tuba and F tuba in symphonic setting. But both sound great only different...

4x4 vs 5x4 or 6x4 ?
@paulblichmann27912 жыл бұрын
In real life: being PERFECTLY in tune with your standmate gives you more power than a $$,$$$ fancy instrument does.
@paulblichmann27912 жыл бұрын
A 6/4 tuba is bigger than a 4/4 tuba on a linear scale...But music is not linear. Music is logarithmic. There's not a whole lot extra gained. In some SPECIFIC halls you might get enough extra to gain reverberation from floor/understage pit...but even then you have to be seated in the exact location. 2 disciplines players on 4/4 are worth 3 huffing into 6/4 tubas.
@paulblichmann27912 жыл бұрын
IN REAL LIFE: all the nuance between tubas is swallowed up by an agro bass trombonist. So don't sweat too much.

Both horns sound great! I prefer the Nirschl over the Melton because it sounds smoother while keeping a punchiness to it
@jerrybyers21722 жыл бұрын
They both sound great, but the 197 with 4 valves can't play C1 nor B1, while the CC with 5 valves can. And that is critical for pieces like Thus Spake Zarathustra.
@seth094978 Жыл бұрын
Uncompensated 4V BBb instruments also have serious intonation issues on B1 (the one right below C2 and above the 2nd partial, you probably meant B0), E1, Eb1, and Db1. The Eb in particular is basically unusable without a huge slide pull. I would never buy a 4V tuba, there are far to many compromised notes in the low register.
@bionicleman1231 Жыл бұрын
@@seth094978 i transitioned from s rudy meinl 5/4 CC to a Fafner rotary 4 valve b flat... let me tell you my fafner is the best horn ive ever played and it has no issues on the low e flat as 1-3-4

The Nirschel almost sounds too aggressive on this excerpt compared to the Melton. I think for Prokofiev 5 the tuba sound should not get to the edgy side of the sound and maintain the smoothness through the line which in this video the Melton achieved where the Nirschel did not as easily.
@brandonbruce85512 жыл бұрын
The Nirschel has more weight to the sound but I must say the Melton sounds better to my ear. Both sound great in their own ways.

I preferred the C tuba over the Bb tuba. The sound was more rounder and controllable than on the Bb. On the C it seemed you could do better dynamics and its tone fit this piece better than the Bb.

The F# is a little sharp on the Melton. A slide should have been pulled. But the tone of the Melton is better.
