I've recently got into Magic. And, in over the course of about a month. I'm hooked. I have been looking into getting to learn the cards and all their strategies. Limited has a lot of appeal to me but, I know very little as compared to how the game is played through and through. Which, leads me on to learning Modern play. The friends that I play this with casually are a decent group of people. One has played since ~2008 and the other two of us are just starting out. Since then I have been learning as much as I can and trying to find different ways to go about building decks and what works with what and how to play against certain decks and, I do have to say, your channel +TheManaSource has by far been the best one I have stumbled across. i use festering newt and orge slumberlord + packrat in my mono black and the festering newt is great early game and the slumberlord is awesome with pack rat

My personal adjustments were: +2 Read The Bones +2 Angelic Accord -2 Ogre Slumlord -1 Drainpipe Vermin -1 Swamp I wrecked face. Angelic accord is a win con without needing the newt, you gain 4 life each turn and every creature you play becomes a 4/4 flyer (or, just keep a single 4/4 flyer - attack, then sac and get a new one to block with and gain 4 life in the process). It being 1 less mana than the slumlord is also a bonus. Unfortunately some smartass sideboarded just to target me, his entire sideboard consisted of 4x Rakdos Charm, 4x Smelt, 4x Vandalblast and 3 Dark Betrayal. My cauldron was destroyed every single time I tried to play it.

played with this deck quite a bit more a mono black with lots of removal is fairly competitive but an aggro deck that has little creatures (but has guttersnipe) and gets the "Chandra, pyromaster" plainswalker out becomes very difficult to beat. I would almost say that chandra, pyromancer can destroy this decks chances as soon as it hits the table (only going off of my experiences)

Kind of Curious as to how you lost in that matchup. In my experiences aggro decks never stand a chance, High Priest of penance stops them cold, curve into gift of immortality and the have no chance of winning - even Chandra is no Match. (Remember, his ability says "nonland permanent" - so he can take out planeswalkers, enchantments, artifacts etc.). Any opponent stupid enough to target him with Chandra's ability is going to pay - granted, they can simply not target him. Your life gain with the cauldron shouldn't be underestimated - I've been beaten down to 3 health and ended the match at 30+. Only way I can see them winning is with direct burn before you can get a cauldron out.

When this deck came out I liked the newt, witch, couldrin combo because it was a cheap way to beat my friends with expensive cards. They hated it. My life would come down to about ten before I had it set up. I also went heavy on lifelink creatures and tokens so by the time it was all done I had 30+ life. I used Sorin as my plainswalker and diabolic Tudor

I've had pretty good success with this deck. the best part is i already had most of the cards i needed to put it together. From my personal experience sacking newts with the cauldron then returning them was what made this deck fun. so far (judging on my play experience) ogre slumlord seems to be the weakest link, but i'm think woking pak rat into the deck would make him playable

kryptic8956 I am glad some one already mentiond this idea. Thing is I was about to ask :-). From my point of view I would swap for Drainpipe Vermins. Dont kill me yet. I know Drainpipes can give you card advantage + it is 1 mana drop, that can help you survive early agrro setups.. AND I also know that we would have a lot of cards at 2 mana spot.. but I personaly belive we can get thru early stages with 4 Festering Newt, and 4 Priests. Thing is I belive we can chop some lands latter on with Ratpack in case something went wrong. I am gona try it today with 2 Ratpacks, and see what it will be like.

I must admit I´ve made this deck my main one. I like it very much. Even I can do nothing with control setups (Esper or UW controls are pain in the ass for combo decks). I´ve tested Rat Pack and I must admit it doesnt fit concept. I also made this improvment : 3x Read from the Bones, helps like hell 2x Liliana of the dark realm (1 fits perfect and 2nd one I have just recived ..)

The Squirteler Typhoid Rats. It costs the same and comes with deathtouch right off the bat. Has been in Magic 15 and khans of tarkir of late, so it shouldn't cost that much or be hard to find.

personally I've found that trading gift of immortality for a play-set of pack rat to be pretty effective. My average life gain totals and orhzov charm make gift of immortality almost a pointless card. If dealing with a low creature aggro deck i've found that swapping high priest of penance out for sin collector, and then any combination of the cauldron, the witch , ogre slumlord, and pharika's cure out for duress and elixir of immortality highly effective.

I'm curently using a different layout --Signature-- 4 newt 4 Witch 2 couldron --Essential-- 4 Orzhov charm --Different-- (Unsure about these) 4 Isochron scepter (recycle your orzhov charms AND..... 4 dash hopes 4 Grim Haruspex (to help fuel your own card draw) 3 Liliana, Heretical healer (Because why not) 4 Diabolical tutor It doesn't work as well as one would think. what if added Ashen Rider as a Win con? giving it gift of imortality, and sacrificing or destroying it, exiles a permanent when it dies, and then when it comes back with gift of immortality exile another permanent. ANY permanent. goodbye lands. Only problem is its an 8 drop, but hopefully you can stall long enough with newts and high priests to get there

I think Ashen Rider would only work in a deck that was more focused on playing it on curve. E.g., 26 lands, maybe keyrunes or cluestones, card draw to get to the good stuff and never miss a land drop. Otherwise, Ashen Rider is going to be a dead draw turns 1-8, which in this environment is suicide. Consider how hard U/W and U/W/B work to land a turn 6 Elspeth.

I have been playing magic since I was 16(I am 33 now) and for some reason I have very little grasp on sideboard. My idea of sideboard is a few cards that are meant to be rotated depending on the deck I'm playing against(which is a hassle so I generally just don't bother with it).Yet after watching so many vids with sideboard and being registered with deckstats.com where they list their sideboard but don't say what cards to drop if you need to use them, I think I've been doing it wrong. How would sideboard be suggested here? What cards do you drop? Help me understand how to use sideboard. I would love to finally understand this piece of the puzzle. This deck seems awesome.

you have to consider what cards your opponent could be running that would potentially cause problems for your deck, and then sideboard cards that would assist you in dealing with those problems if they arise.
