As a young 11 year old girl I would put on Hunky Dory which was my brothers album.. Sit in the dark with just the gasfure on and listen to this song over and over along with Bewley.. My parents had split up and I cannot explain how much comfort this gave me.. Made me feel there was something more out there and it was really OK to be different.. God bless you David.. Thankyou for everything the world is not the same without you.. Love you forever x

I was a 14 year old boy and I would listen alone to the entire album over and over and over on my record player. Bewley Brothers was my all time favorite but this song was my tonic. It took on a sort of religious quality for me. I always thought the lyrics were only for me and my foreboding depression but it sounds as if I have a celestial sister out there. I hadn’t heard this version of it till now and after I read your words, my eyes moistened a little.

My first Bowie album back when it first came out. Always loved this song and I was so happy that Bowie went back to singing this at the time. Great comment! Really powerful.

Wonderful. Similar thing here, as a young girl in 1971 I bought 'Life on Mars' single when I was 10, then I saved up for the LP. I've loved him for 50 years 🖤💙🖤

what the heck hole are you talking about? I've been wishing, hoping and praying and searching regularly for a live version of Quicksand. That and Lady Grinning Soul are my top favorites of his...I had it all in my head that god might actually exist when I stumbled upon this tonight...and you're all, casually, yeah it's one of his better live takes on Quicksand and I'm all 0_*

I grew up listening to Bowie from 1969 onwards - bought all his early albums and some later ones. I remember Roger Daltrey introducing him on Top Of The Tops " the Guvnor " Quite simply, the greatest, most talented, most erudite, most diverse, pop/rock solo artist ever.

LYRICS [Verse 1] I'm closer to the Golden Dawn Immersed in Crowley's uniform Of imagery I'm living in a silent film Portraying Himmler's sacred realm Of dream reality I'm frightened by the total goal Drawing to the ragged hole And I ain't got the power anymore No I ain't got the power anymore [Verse 2] I'm the twisted name on Garbo's eyes Living proof of Churchill's lies I'm destiny I'm torn between the light and dark Where others see their targets Divine symmetry Should I kiss the viper's fang Or herald loud the death of Man I'm sinking in the quicksand of my thought And I ain't got the power anymore [Chorus] Don't believe in yourself Don't deceive with belief Knowledge comes with death's release [Verse 3] I'm not a prophet or a stone age man Just a mortal with potential of a superman I'm living on I'm tethered to the logic of Homo Sapien Can't take my eyes from the great salvation Of bullshit faith If I don't explain what you ought to know You can tell me all about it On the next Bardo I'm sinking in the quicksand of my thought And I ain't got the power anymore [Chorus] Don't believe in yourself Don't deceive with belief Knowledge comes with death's release Don't believe in yourself Don't deceive with belief Knowledge comes with death's release

I saw Bowie perform Quicksand acapella on the Serious Moonlight tour. He seemed so vulnerable., spiritually naked.Twenty thousand people held silent. Towards the end if the concert, David motioned to the trees on the set (some of which were the worse for wear) and said "Isn't God wonderful?"
