Sound cards are still a thing. But for most people, the on-board built-in solution is enough. If you listen to a lot of music on your computer and prefer high quality, like perhaps your music is mostly in uncompressed flac format, you should consider investing in a dedicated sound card. Or if you're a music producer, sound designer or something like that, you should absolutely consider it.
