Such a banger to dance to. Great bass and driving beat and dramatic kinda call-response.

When Ricky died in 1985, the band's drummer, Keith Strickland, took over on guitar. That is who you see playing guitar int he "Love Shack" video.

This song in particular was a requisite song at a school dance in the 80s in the US. This song was guaranteed to fill the dance floor. One of the greatest party bands ever. :)

Back in the day, when you were dancing to this and he says "Down, Down!" you went on the floor and then when the music picked up you got up and danced again! The B52's are art students out of Athens, Georgia and this is basically beach music to party to. At the time they called it NEW WAVE as it was so different from disco and the older rock artists. Blondie, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Madness, etc. came out around the same time.

Their guitarist, Ricky Wilson (brother of female vocalist- the blonde one- Cindy Wilson) died of AIDS in 1985. After that the band never sounded the same as their sound took a much more mainstream direction.

This is a talented, campy, witty, fun band with a deadpan delivery. They should not be taken seriously but they should be heard and watched. Rock Lobster was released in 1976 but didn't get really popular until the 80's. Don't sleep on this band. Check out their other songs like Love Shack, Private Idaho, Roam, Planet Claire, Cosmic Thing, Give Me Back My Man, and so many more.

@@DashyAndDadReacts Hey, Thank you. Well I think I got something wrong, but I'm not sure. They started in '76 and built up their rep through playing gigs. , However, Rock Lobster wasn't "officially released" until '78 on a single. Then a different version was released again on their first album in '79.

Usually classed with the UK and US New Wave. However, they had a lot of influences. You can, for instance, hear the surf music sound in this song. John Lennon regarded them as the heirs to Yoko Ono. They are certainly superb practitioners of parody and satire. The Hoodoo Gurus were, at times, their counterpart in Aus.
