Fun, crazy, funky, but great musicians with some great music. Those early B52 albums are full of great songs. So, 80s. Dance this mess around.

Early B52's was very experimental. They became much more fun and mainstream later in the 80s

Yup and I prefer *EARLY* The B-52’s eg “Dance This Mess Around”, “Quiche Lorraine”, “Strobe Light”, Private Idaho”, “Song For A Future Generation”, “Legal Tender”. As is always the case with artists who start out in the fringes like these guys did in Athens, GA is that when you have a commercial hit like “Love Shack”, you’re defined by it. The masses don’t realize that these guys were ahead of their time and put out some really cool music that wasn’t watered down for Top 40 airplay.

I don't see how early B52 are less funny than later

@@JulioLeonFandinho The way I interpreted the original post was that by the time The B-52’s released “Love Shack” and “Roam”, they were more accessible to pop radio. Their music from the late 70’s/early 80’s wouldn’t have been a comfortable fit in the Top 40 landscape. I heard “Planet Claire” on alternative radio. At the time, it just didn’t fit in with the likes of Billy Joel and Donna Summer.

This was the opening track on their debut album. This was how the B-52's chose to introduce themselves to the public. I love them.

Okay, okay… we will all focus on the strangeness but take a moment and consider the mechanics. Kate is doing SOOOO much in this composition. She’s providing a bass line, covering the melody, and vocals… AT THE SAME TIME! She and Cindy were really a class act. Yes, the tunes were occasionally “original” but a person should never come to the conclusion these folks didn’t take their craft seriously. They were unusual, but God love em!

Yes. This is always the right place to enter the B52s rabbit hole. It is always a shame when reactors start with Love Shack and think that is the B52s. They were never the same after Ricky died and a lot of original 52s fans were pretty disenchanted with the Love Shack era.

The early B-52s were seriously different, wonderfully unique and highly danceable. There songs were rarely complicated, but they were always just so much fun. I highly recommend My Private Idaho and Quiche Lorraine. To me personally, once they lost their guitarist, who tragically passed way too early in his life, their sound never was anywhere near as good. I know I'm in the minority, but I can't stand Love Shack for it's dependence on repetitious vocals and none of the weird substance that their earlier works embraced. Another fun one to try is one from the lead singer's solo efforts, Monster In My Pants.

An obviously acquired taste but The B52s have an enormous fan base... Their first few albums were EPIC and the loss of Ricky Wilson (who died from AIDS) was enormous.... But they were able to move on and their commercial success with Love Shack and Roam brought new fans ❤

Great reaction as usual. I was wondering if you ever do reactions of newer music, say from the 90's and up? Or at least from the late 80's instead of the late 70's and early 80's. I ask because I noticed most of the people who do reactions tend to do the same songs which covers about maybe around 100 to 150 songs, but there's a lot of amazing music from later that you should check out. ✌

The B-52's were groundbreaking and evolved over time. Take a listen to "Revolution Earth" from their 1992 album "Good Stuff" which is a criminally underrated album. "Revolution Earth is both beautifil and magical. I think it's the B-52s' best song and a hidden gem most fans don't readily acknowledge. Kate Pierson's voice is soaring in this song! Here's a link, enjoy! kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHbViIWqf5lgqKc

Hi Angela.... I have a great new artist for you to react to - Amanda Marshall. She is a superstar singer-songwriter from Canada. Her debut album came out in the mid 90's and she became famous because Elton john publicly praised her music. There is not one bad song on her debut album. This song, "Birmingham" is about a woman getting the courage to walk out on an abusive relationship. It's a beautiful and powerful song. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3rdfpZ5g6agppY
