Didn't expect the MSI B550i board to do so well here. It's what I have so I'm glad with my purchase. A bit of a warning for those considering a purchase though, the MSI board has a custom backplate because of a non-standard layout on the back. This may cause problems when mounting certain AIOs or air coolers which require their own backplate.

I looked at the Aorus and Strix boards for my recent build, one interesting caveat came around that ended up with me choosing the Strix despite the Aorus board being more price-competitive. The CPU socket on the Strix board is actually positioned slightly lower down, which allows you to fit a wider range of coolers to it without interfering with other components such as top-mounted fans. For my build in the NR200 I'm able to fit a Noctua U12A on the Strix board without needing to leave out one of the top case fans, but with the Aorus board I wouldn't be able to do that.
@nicholasvinen3 жыл бұрын
@@chairs-dimension interesting. I'm going to use a 240mm AIO with mine so socket position should not be critical. That's one thing I like about the Fractal Design Era case, the rad fits in the top just above the motherboard and also provides most of the case airflow, so you don't need space for extra case fans.

The video is very detailed and interesting as always. But I have something to say: the case used is a best case scenario when it comes to ITX cases and I'm not surprised that they performed that well in thermal testing. The AIO fans surely make quick work of the heat generated by the VRM since they're so close to the top of the board. This doesen't invalid the tests by any means, but, having an SFF build myself, I think that most enthusiasts might build in much smaller cases and report higher VRM temperatures. Maybe a downdraft cooler with the top panel blocked off might've made for a more realistic scenario.

If you search on reddit you will find lots of threads with people having the same issue with Asus B550 boards and Intel I225v chip. These boards keep boosting the Ryzen 5000 CPUs until they reach an operating temperature of 90,4°C, regardless of your cooling solution, I had a R9 5950X cooled by a 360 rad and 3 high static pressure fans running at 4.125 GHz all-core on a 32 thread, small FFT load, 1 hour Prime 95 stress test, adding a second 360 rad didn't change anything but the clock speeds, which rose to 4.377GHz under the same conditions. Could you maybe look into this further? As a small YT channel and quick system turnaround we only have a very limited amount of Gigabyte boards available for testing at a given time. Would have been helpful to have this review beforehand haha my build: coolermaster NR200 case (2 fans exhaust on top) noctua nh-u12a (shoving air to the back) asus b550-i rog strix ryzen 5900x (took almost 2 months to arrive) rtx 3080 asus tuf gaming (took almost 3 months to arrive) corsair sf750 PSU corsair mp600 nvme SSD still waiting on the ram to arrive so I just got a cheap 8gb stick on it if you are looking to do a mini-itx build I recommend you copy my setup. The thermals are pretty good and I can attest that monster cooler fits well in that case and the socket position in that mobo allows enough space for all the parts (does NOT fit high-profile ram). Funnily enough the CPU was detected without a firmware upgrade (it came with 1401 firmware version from factory) so I didn't need to use biosflashback and updated the bios through EZFlash instead One small tip though, I used the nvme SSD built-in heatsink, so I removed the asus nvme heatsink and I was having problems with the nvme not being detected on that slot. Turns out there is a little mechanism on that board that only activates the m2 slot 1 if the "daughterboard" is pressed down on the main board. If you use the built-in heatsink you have 2 screws (one on each side of the ssd), since I wasn't using the built-in heatsink the one close to the slot was not screwed which made the slot not work at all. I didn't have a screw that fit that slot (the built-in one is too tall because it expects the motherboard heatsink), but simply pressing the board down made a "click" sound and everything started working Took me a few hours to figure that out since to mess around on the m2_1 slot I had to remove the video card due to lack of space I hope this helps, this day and age there is very little reason to not go for mini-itx for most people. Lots of people get scared away from PC gaming because of the monster cases full of RGB. My mini-itx case is connected only to the TV and basically acts as a console + chromecast that works with a mouse and doesn't take much more space than a ps5. I never had to install any extra pcie boards, 2 slots of ram is more than enough, I never used more than 4 usb slots at the same time. All the extra fluff in these normal ATX boards is wasted for 90% of people

This was helpful. Thanks! The MSI board is $190, much less than the $220 Aorus and $240 Asus. Asrock isn't even in the conversation.

It seems strange that the other motherboard manufacturers have still not brought out anything to compete with the AsRock B550m-itx/ac at the budget end of the range. I can't be the only person who bought the AsRock board to add a future upgrade path to a Ryzen 5 3600 based system and just wants something which can handle mid range CPUs without breaking the bank.

Yeah I bought that board for a secondary system with a Ryzen 3600. Just got it up and running today. It seems fine for the price. I really just want to play 4K videos and music so don't need anything amazing.

I got the Gigabyte a few months ago, I lucked out because the only reason I bought it was that it was the cheapest of the 3 :)

I wont touch Gigabyte boards as my z370 and x570 boards had faults. z370 mic port stopped working after 6months and the x570 board just died completely after 1½months. Maybe I was just super unlucky idk.

Its pays not to be brand myopic. Have used all of them over 2 decades (still do) they all have flaws which change year over year and at every price point. Gigabyte bios usually sucks but thier engineering goes from "eh" to monster over engineered. Asus software and bios is great but they price it more than it is better and with the "power stage" bullshit and "arez" and so on they have faults too. Msi is great, software isn't as fancy as asus but its still good and priced to match gigabyte. Asrock, suck dont use Biostar, dont even acknowledge. For every problem you have someone is having a different problem with something else.

@@tomstech4390 Never had problems with other boards. I even had a gigabyte z68 fail on me now that i think of it. Ive had 3-4 asus ones, never had any issues, bit overpriced compared to others sure. Might have just been really bad luck but still really off-putting.

I used to use Gigabyte boards all the time years back but no more. Reliability and customer service is now crap. I've no complaints with Asus or MSI , use both but seem to favour MSI of late. Have not used an Asrock board in years but don't recall anything bad but the brand doesn't come into contention when doing a build now. Yeah , the blacklisting against HWUB would make me kinda anti for sure , not the way to promote customer faith.

If they blacklist/ban/don't sent samples them you must be doing smth right. Integrity. The rarest virtue and the most important for a review and media channel.

Excelent video. I built 2 itx systems with aorus b550i pro ax with r9 3900x 64gb ram in lian li tu150. Works very well. Only problem was case suported usb type c front but that board dosen't have it.

So, even the cheapest one can easily handle a 6 or 8 core CPU. I would assume that most people building an ITX PC would be using only 6 or 8 cores, but it's obviously nice to be able to upgrade to more cores in the future I guess. I don't think I'd ever upgrade beyond 8 cores on the AM4 platform. If I find myself suddenly doing work which benefits from more than 8 cores, I will be getting a new motherboard at that point anyway I think (I'm currently running a mATX Asrock B450M Pro 4 with 3600). I would definitely never get one of those ones with active cooling. It would be a pain in the ass to try to repair if the fan ever gets noisy or stops working.

Close to my new build! Good show i got a NR200, 4 120mm Noctua Industrials, Noctua nh-l9a-am4, & Corsair sf600. Just got to order my Asus B550I, 1tb Samsung 980... on the fence with the Ram 32gb of 3600 or 4400 16gb (???), R5 3600 or 5600x (if the new one drops in price), 3060ti or 3070 which ever i can find. Hopefully done by Feb.

I have the Aorus B500i, and boy oh boy is it a love-hate relationship. It's a great board, but the CMOS battery is hidden under the IO shield and is pretty much accessible and the shorting pins simply don't work, so if you try to overclock anything you risk essentially bricking your mobo.

I will definitely build an itx pc in future as my main pc
@nicholasvinen3 жыл бұрын
I did that and am very happy. You can build a very powerful PC into a small case these days. M.2 SSDs are great. Just make sure to choose a case that will fit your desired GPU very carefully. High end nVidia cards will fit and stay cool but only if you do your research first.
