@@ArmageddonAfterparty IDK my Asrock b450m hdv isn't missing any features that I'm aware of. All those beefed up VRM's on more expensive boards are a bit pointless with AMD since you're not really going to get anything out of an overclock, anyways. It might make sense if I was running an R9 chip for rendering or something, but the 2200G I was originally running in it wasn't ever going to push it to its limits, and even the 3600 + 2070 I've upgraded to over the last couple years had never caused me any problems. The only reason I'm even considering upgrading is because I would like 2 more DIMMs. Even that isn't a deal breaker, I still haven't maxed out the 32gb board limit, and really I'm only considering an upgrade because the plague has resurrected an old internet community from the dead and we want a dedicated game server for minecraft and maybe quake (I also want a dedicated streaming capture box so I can record VR without puking from encoding-induced stutters and latency lol) and I just already have half the parts to build one.

If you saved money you probably did the right thing. I never think hard enough as to how much wiser it would be to take the savings from parts slightly slower than the best at quite a bit less cost and then buy again in 3 years using the savings, something a lot better whilst having something still worth a higher part of its cost to sell on. I think you can stay better off and more up to date as an average this way with. I am going to get the zen3 5600x because everyone can only talk about the future as to why the 5800x or 5950x will be better (more cores which aren't yet used properly) with most FPS benchmarks showing 1-2% difference. - Saving $400-500 I am going to get the B550 because whilst I can't find a benchmark comparison, I'm guessing it is in the same ball park. Saving $100 I will get the 6800 XT radeon because 5% more performance from the 6900XT is not worth 50% more money. Saving $450 So $1000 odd dollars saving instead of 5-8% more FPS. In 3-4 years I expect that $1000 will help buy a lot more than 8% more FPS. Incidentally my reason for going AMD now is that I think there is a lot of logic to the idea that because Xbox/PS5 are both AMD platforms, cross platform developments in the future will give far more natural affinity and time to AMD optimisations.

Don't invest more into motherboard, GPU or CPU than what you need, as they become outdated very quickly.

PCIe 4 doesn't matter now, but it will have some effect 3-4 years down the line... but a lot of people would replace their PC before that point anyway, so for them there's no point in getting a B550 unless they're putting a Ryzen 9 in it and have a really good cooler which would make a 4-phase VRM the limiting factor to performance. @@nathangamble125 Even a 2080ti doesn't saturate pci-e 3.0 8x except in very specific synthetic loads where you are purposely trying to bottleneck it, so other than storage and like 40 gig lan over a 1x slot you won't need pci-e 4.0 for like 14 more years given an average gpu cycle of 2 years and that is still only if you are running the top tier card ie your 80ti's. We only get 15-25% performance increases per generation of gpu's. Most people won't even saturate pci-e 2.0 16x by that time, realistically most people have low or end or on board graphics and even most gamers are running mid tier hardware at best, from my experience and what I have heard from others, never seen a ryzen board that wasn't discount trash have a bad vrm solution, bad vrm's on motherboards has been a thing of the past for like 10 years now unless you are buying shady no name brand 30 dollar motherboards. The problem for b450 is the BIOS update, JTC already said that BIOS update is dangerous and has a potential to brick your entirely mobo if you don't do it properly. For enthusiast, that's not a problem, but for a normal consumer, it's actually quite risky. So my suggestion is the same as JTC, buy x570 if you want to buy ryzen 4000 series later, buy b550 if you manage to find a very good deal, and just buy b450 if you are okay with a dead chipset and just want to buy a budget PC and not really care about upgradeability.

I'll tell you one reason for the 550: The lack of chipset fan! I recently did a "silent" build with a Be Quiet! case, power supply, and cooler. They're almost completely silent and due to me having 3 fans on the Dark Rock Pro 4 they all spin at low RPMs and my Ryzen 3950x stays super cool even when working hard. Well I'll tell you I Certainly hear that X570 motherboard PCH fan whirring away at 2800 rpm! It looks like such a little fan doesn't it? Being a recording studio and doing audio production and need a quiet pc. - Also in the studio business we tend to use our PCs 8 years or more because it takes alot of work to get a stable system with all the plugins and hardware you need. Then that exact system is required to re-open old projects. A moving part like an extra and tiny fan is the death of that system. It will probably wear out first and is not easily replaced like a case fan. Besides the quietness and quality of the Be Quiet! stuff I bought them (especially the cooler) because the fan's lifespan is 300,000 hours. The Chipset fan is only 60,000 and with it going 2800 rpm all the time It's probably less. It's basically a time limit on that system, and creates extra noise to boot. Gamers and enthusiasts don't want an 8 year old system. Studio people might buy a newer computer but still keep their old systems around and functioning, to re-enact old projects, use old software and hardware when they need to. As well as my newer stuff I sometimes still use my year 2000 G4 macbook because it's the only thing that will run certain programs. I wouldn't buy the dated 450 or 470 because we keep systems so long. I would buy the newer because it gives that much more longevity, and future upgrade-ability. The B550 also has two M.2 slots where the 450 only has one and it's too close to the CPU. I'd rather the major heat source be as far as possible from my working system data which is worth much more than the computer to me.

So if this is the general consensus, should we see mobo manufacturers rethinking their prices for B550?
@RAW_Reality4 жыл бұрын
Problem is, #1) it's "new", so there's that premium, #2) this is probably the first video coverage about the compromises the b550 boards have that's came out, and "with everyone waiting so long for it to come out", they're already selling out at their current prices because of panic buyers, and #3) few people actually do enough researching this kind of stuff before just jumping head first into buyer's remorse (which is _exactly_ what caused the backlash of Zen3 support for b450/70). But the actual "answer" to your question is "yes, they should", but it's unlikely to happen because of those 3 things... Imagine what'd take place if the next iPhone came out and it absolutely sucked... All those droves of people that just "have to have the lastest and greatest", only to run face-first into a brick wall... You think the b450/70 backlash was bad... 😅

-Note about PCI-E 4.0, I think we will reach a point on PC where you'll need a PCI-E 4.0 SSD before a PCI-E 4.0 GPU for optimal performance on games due to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S using said PCI-E 4.0 SSDs. -Especially in the PS5's case, games that are released on only it then ported to PC, or have optimized for the PS5's SSD will gain massive loading/world LOD improvements via having said PCI-E 4.0 SSD vs a SATA SSD, or an Average NVME 3.0 (Average 3.0 goes around 1-2GB/s read/write, PCI-E 4.0's lowest is 4.5 GB/s Read/Write on the Corsair, which is not the one you should buy due to that, and it's the price being higher than 5gb/s read-write drives like the saberent rocket PCI-E 4.0) -And based on current performsnce projections, and how the TITAN RTX does push to saturate a PCI-E 3.0 8x slot, I wouldn't be surprised if Ampere and Navi 2's strongest flavors push PCI-E 3.0 to near-full saturation, which means the next-generation cards likely would start going to PCI-E 4.0 at the high end. -And that's not even considering cases like the RX 5500XT having its memory hamstrung by PCI-E bandwidth (likely by its own internal bus, but the case is still one that should be noted), which we likely could see occur even with Ampere and Navi 2 before the raw GPU Cores hit 3.0 16x saturation.

@Nelthalin4 жыл бұрын
There are two reasons i would want a B550 over a X570: 1: Chipset fan. They are small and loud and only really expensive boards dont have them because it needs a huge heatsink to compensate. 2: Power Usage. Idle power usage of Ryzen 3000 is not that great because of the separate IO die. But having a second one of those on the motherboard makes it worse. And thats also why it needs the chipset fan. The current IO die is not that efficient. With B450 boards the idle power is not to bad. So that is also a reason why i would buy the B550. I have a PCI-E 4.0 16X slot for the GPU and one M2 4.0 for the SSD so its future proof enough. And you still have support for SAM. (Wonder if that would perform that well with PCI-E 3.0 i can imagine 4.0 will help a bit there)

Here's why I'd go with the B550. 1. I keep my PC for at least 4-5 years and run them for 16 hours a day. The 90's fan on X570 is probably the first thing to die and without you knowing, kill the rest of the board too. Built-in fans are very inefficient, bad designs. 2. I don't need any of the features of the X570. 3. I never used the same motherboard for different CPUs because by the time I need an upgrade, it doesn't make any sense to do so. 4. Yeah, but it looks like at least 2021 now, since we know Zen3 still uses AM4. However, the sheer fact that they're having to remove older CPU models from the boards now, seems to indicate we're reaching the upper limit of AM4 longevity. Wouldn't surprise me at all if the 5000 series or whatever comes out late 2021 uses a different socket.

Hardware unboxed made a great video testing some b550 boards I think b550 isn't pointless the b550 boards have better vrms than most x570 board for the same price everything you get extra with x570 is not a important thing for the average user and if you want to overclock b550 will have better budget boards I would go for b550

My thoughts exactly...i think this video is very misleading and it doesn t feature the most important aspect of all...VRMS. Like well over a half of the x570 board VRMs are simply bad. Even running your cpu at stock speeds and voltages(which are usually preety high) u will not experience the same cpu boost you could get on a better vrm board.

BIOS upgrade was quick and easy and I up and running with a nice faster CPU!! My Radeon VII doesn’t use PCIE4.0 so good there.

Seems like I’ll stick with my X470 instead of getting a 500 series motherboard. I just don’t think PCIe Gen 4 is worth the upgrade just yet. B550 to me, from my experience is garbage. Someone brought up fan headers - true But the chipset it immature to want to play with updated CPUs. ALSO the build quality of B550 motherboards is exceptionally cheaper then the X570 boards. If you have a Gigabyte X570 Master and you got the B550 Master = There is NO way on God's Green Earth you can compare both boards. The older board wins by a complete landslide.
