B550 is here and it's the first motherboard to launch at a time when AM4 is starting to become end of life with regards to the 5 year support promised back in 2016. So should you get a B550 or an X570? Let's talk about it.

@@OneShotdeathCrew I just got a B550 Tomahawk for a friends build and I couldn't find an x570 board that wasn't the same price or more expensive with the same features the cheaper x570 boards I found lacked many features that the B550 Tomahawk had some of the x570 boards that where around the same price didn't even have built in wifi which is necessary for my friend since he doesn't have any ethernet setup.

@@ArmageddonAfterparty IDK my Asrock b450m hdv isn't missing any features that I'm aware of. All those beefed up VRM's on more expensive boards are a bit pointless with AMD since you're not really going to get anything out of an overclock, anyways. It might make sense if I was running an R9 chip for rendering or something, but the 2200G I was originally running in it wasn't ever going to push it to its limits, and even the 3600 + 2070 I've upgraded to over the last couple years had never caused me any problems. The only reason I'm even considering upgrading is because I would like 2 more DIMMs. Even that isn't a deal breaker, I still haven't maxed out the 32gb board limit, and really I'm only considering an upgrade because the plague has resurrected an old internet community from the dead and we want a dedicated game server for minecraft and maybe quake (I also want a dedicated streaming capture box so I can record VR without puking from encoding-induced stutters and latency lol) and I just already have half the parts to build one.

If you saved money you probably did the right thing. I never think hard enough as to how much wiser it would be to take the savings from parts slightly slower than the best at quite a bit less cost and then buy again in 3 years using the savings, something a lot better whilst having something still worth a higher part of its cost to sell on. I think you can stay better off and more up to date as an average this way with. I am going to get the zen3 5600x because everyone can only talk about the future as to why the 5800x or 5950x will be better (more cores which aren't yet used properly) with most FPS benchmarks showing 1-2% difference. - Saving $400-500 I am going to get the B550 because whilst I can't find a benchmark comparison, I'm guessing it is in the same ball park. Saving $100 I will get the 6800 XT radeon because 5% more performance from the 6900XT is not worth 50% more money. Saving $450 So $1000 odd dollars saving instead of 5-8% more FPS. In 3-4 years I expect that $1000 will help buy a lot more than 8% more FPS. Incidentally my reason for going AMD now is that I think there is a lot of logic to the idea that because Xbox/PS5 are both AMD platforms, cross platform developments in the future will give far more natural affinity and time to AMD optimisations.

You're likely starting from the wrong spot. First you figure out everything you need the system to do. When you're clear on that, the parts you need or don't need become obvious. If you have money left over, you invest that into the parts that you expect to last longest, like the monitor, SSD, or PSU. Don't invest more into motherboard, GPU or CPU than what you need, as they become outdated very quickly.

I think based on what I nead my build for i will go with higher tier B550 because I wont be buying 4 gen m.2 any time soon and my case has place for 5 sata drivers anyways so i dont see whats the point in going for x570 for me. In Europe MSI b550 gaming edge wifi is 165Euro so and the equivalent x570 would be around 200 - MSI x570 Tomahowk or so.... Im building mid range audio/video production pc. Cheers

This perspective is heavily focused on people upgrading motherboards with old cpus. If you are getting the zen 3 cpus, there is no real need to get an x570 as alot of them DO cost more, and the only real benefit you are getting is the dual SLI support which no one uses anymore.

@@billybadass7718 Great choice! The CPU and GPU are a perfect combo for gaming, definitely the sweet spot for you! The motherboard is affordable, looks way to awesome, with some Japan/China vibes, and the audio is just god node! I personally went with R7 5700X for the extra 2 cores and 4 threads due me doing a lot of productivity work. I personally went with the RTX 3070 Ti because it was only 25 euros more than the regular RTX 3070, if any more expensive then the Ti variant ain't worth getting at all, especially with 4-10% increase, haha. I've thrown a undervolt with a little overclock on the undervolt and it's almost performing as the Ti variant should've been, but the lack of the VRAM, which is only 8GB, is a disappointment. 10GB would've hit the sweet spot for the card, still not enough, but would've been much better. Discussion was a little all over the place, but the gist was: buy X570, unless you find a really good deal on B550, and are okay with the compromises that chipset makes. PCIe 4 doesn't matter now, but it will have some effect 3-4 years down the line... but a lot of people would replace their PC before that point anyway, so for them there's no point in getting a B550 unless they're putting a Ryzen 9 in it and have a really good cooler which would make a 4-phase VRM the limiting factor to performance. Basically, I mostly agree with you, but I think it would be more like 20-30% of people who would benefit from a B550 over a B450. Still not the majority though.

@@nathangamble125 Even a 2080ti doesn't saturate pci-e 3.0 8x except in very specific synthetic loads where you are purposely trying to bottleneck it, so other than storage and like 40 gig lan over a 1x slot you won't need pci-e 4.0 for like 14 more years given an average gpu cycle of 2 years and that is still only if you are running the top tier card ie your 80ti's. We only get 15-25% performance increases per generation of gpu's. Most people won't even saturate pci-e 2.0 16x by that time, realistically most people have low or end or on board graphics and even most gamers are running mid tier hardware at best, from my experience and what I have heard from others, never seen a ryzen board that wasn't discount trash have a bad vrm solution, bad vrm's on motherboards has been a thing of the past for like 10 years now unless you are buying shady no name brand 30 dollar motherboards. Also don't knock a 4 phase vrm asus and msi have come out with some really good 4 phase power delivery designs, mind you using top tier vrm's. chokes and caps, that being said I've seen shit 12+4 vrm's in the past. Most of what I just said is ofc irrelevant in the enterprise space but that isn't the target demo for these products.

The problem for b450 is the BIOS update, JTC already said that BIOS update is dangerous and has a potential to brick your entirely mobo if you don't do it properly. For enthusiast, that's not a problem, but for a normal consumer, it's actually quite risky. So my suggestion is the same as JTC, buy x570 if you want to buy ryzen 4000 series later, buy b550 if you manage to find a very good deal, and just buy b450 if you are okay with a dead chipset and just want to buy a budget PC and not really care about upgradeability.

@jasonchui5317
@jasonchui5317 3 жыл бұрын
I'll tell you one reason for the 550: The lack of chipset fan! I recently did a "silent" build with a Be Quiet! case, power supply, and cooler. They're almost completely silent and due to me having 3 fans on the Dark Rock Pro 4 they all spin at low RPMs and my Ryzen 3950x stays super cool even when working hard. Well I'll tell you I Certainly hear that X570 motherboard PCH fan whirring away at 2800 rpm! It looks like such a little fan doesn't it? Being a recording studio and doing audio production and need a quiet pc. - Also in the studio business we tend to use our PCs 8 years or more because it takes alot of work to get a stable system with all the plugins and hardware you need. Then that exact system is required to re-open old projects. A moving part like an extra and tiny fan is the death of that system. It will probably wear out first and is not easily replaced like a case fan. Besides the quietness and quality of the Be Quiet! stuff I bought them (especially the cooler) because the fan's lifespan is 300,000 hours. The Chipset fan is only 60,000 and with it going 2800 rpm all the time It's probably less. It's basically a time limit on that system, and creates extra noise to boot. Gamers and enthusiasts don't want an 8 year old system. Studio people might buy a newer computer but still keep their old systems around and functioning, to re-enact old projects, use old software and hardware when they need to. As well as my newer stuff I sometimes still use my year 2000 G4 macbook because it's the only thing that will run certain programs. I wouldn't buy the dated 450 or 470 because we keep systems so long. I would buy the newer because it gives that much more longevity, and future upgrade-ability. The B550 also has two M.2 slots where the 450 only has one and it's too close to the CPU. I'd rather the major heat source be as far as possible from my working system data which is worth much more than the computer to me.

@@Illsky9 You are so right. But also when you do mastering mixing kind of workflow:many different fans having different frequency profiles are literally preventing the work. Other thing is medical case called tinnitus. If you happen to have extremely sensitive ears the two or more uncontrolled fans exite it quite soon. I have pot for the fan speed of CPU cooler and PSU is near silent style. Setting up sensitive analyzer mic and checking out what is the level of background noise and more importantly being aware what is the noise's frequency profile can make wonders by revealing culprits. Db meters are useless(or bad joke) in such audio recording studio context.

PS: I ordered my B550 Tomahawk for 180 euro, but went as low as 170 (it's up to 189 now as they're clearly having supply problems). A X570 Tomahawk at its cheapest is 250 euro here. So the financial difference is there, at least over here. It kinda pains me to see Americans go "what?! an X570 Tomahawk is only 200 dollars here, why would I spend 180 on an B550", as you're clearly getting an awesome deal on the X570's, rather than being shafted on the B550's, so of course you should go X570.

Save your money, keep an eye out for deals, don't sweat the small stuff. These days in particular, I'd say figure out what your budget is, save the money up front, then shop. If you have to buy things piecemeal, you're likely to run into buying stuff that you wish you hadn't and you either have to buy the component again, or be locked into something you don't want now. So if this is the general consensus, should we see mobo manufacturers rethinking their prices for B550?
@RAW_Reality
@RAW_Reality 4 жыл бұрын
Problem is, #1) it's "new", so there's that premium, #2) this is probably the first video coverage about the compromises the b550 boards have that's came out, and "with everyone waiting so long for it to come out", they're already selling out at their current prices because of panic buyers, and #3) few people actually do enough researching this kind of stuff before just jumping head first into buyer's remorse (which is _exactly_ what caused the backlash of Zen3 support for b450/70). But the actual "answer" to your question is "yes, they should", but it's unlikely to happen because of those 3 things... Imagine what'd take place if the next iPhone came out and it absolutely sucked... All those droves of people that just "have to have the lastest and greatest", only to run face-first into a brick wall... You think the b450/70 backlash was bad... 😅

The first ones out of the gate are mostly high end versions. We're now getting budget X570 boards in the market, and I'd expect to see the same eventually with B550. Either way B450 is dead in the water at this point.

Just pulled the trigger on a new computer. One factor that didn't get mentioned here: there's a lot less choice for small form-factor boards using the X570 chipset, especially if you also want front panel USB Type-C.

Some X570s are more limited than B550s. The Strix B550-E, for instance, is superior to the X570 unless you want to run multiple M2 storage instead of just one and the GPU. Also some of the really good X570s such as the Taichi, Unify and Aorus Master are noticeably more expensive in the UK.

Seems like it comes down to if you want pcie 4.0 for more devices (NVME/video/etc) and more usb 3/3.1 ports. Honestly if you are never going to upgrade your storage and don't have a bunch of usb 3.1 devices you can get either a cheap b550 board or go with a more deluxe model. Personally I always add more storage is seams so being able add more pcie 4.0 nvme storage is going to be in the future. Prices are a bit odd as he mentioned as the big price difference is between standard/low end boards and deluxe mega boards. It still comes down to actual slots. One thing to consider that I have noticed also is better boards (b550 or x570) has built in nvme heat spreaders many with fans. Something to think about for extended nvme performance which may make the extra costs worth it anyways.
