While The Who may not be my favorite rock band of all time, they are definitely the best example of what a rock band should be. Their authenticity and energy is just amazing. Roger’s powerful voice, Pete’s guitar work, Entwistle’s bass work, and Moon’s crazy drumming is just unmatched by few. They are literally one of the only bands to have a lead vocalist, lead guitarist, lead bassist and lead drummer!

Guys, there is an excellent documentary on Keith Moon you can watch for free on KZbin called “Keith Moon The Final 24”. Even among the wild men of rock he still stands out. Who else would drive a Rolls Royce into a swimming pool for a laugh?

Such a great live band, you are right about the band trying to out do each other, John Entwistle along with Geezer Bulter were the best 2 bass player in rock, Pete Townsend once said that John was better at playing lead guitar parts on the bass than he was on guitar.

Hard to believe but when people discuss best front men in Rock Daltrey is often overlooked. Of course Freddy is probably the greatest, and then you have guys like Plant, Dickinson, Ozzy, Jagger, Roth and even Geddy - but Daltrey definitely deserves to be in the top 10, maybe even top 5. Styx had the one-two punch of DeYoung and Shaw, Supertramp had Hodgson and Davies, the Who had Daltrey and Townshend - maybe that's why ...

Viewed this again today - nice rxn to a great selection ! Ethan, I believe your senses serve you well, since - to a large extent -The Who really was Pete's band. This live version (of the original 1971 track from the "Who's Next" album) is an absolute classic. It showcases the band in its original (and best) lineup, making an extraordinarily interactive and energetic performance of this classic anthem, on a night when they could very well have been considered the best band of all timer! This video (famous now) chronicles this awesome 1960s/1970s band having reached their peak, yet still able to demonstrate their powerful musical and artistic prowess. And it documents as well a time period in popular music when large stadium and arena shows we're becoming the artistic and the reputational currency in rock and roll. And The Who paid in dividends ! We'll never see entertainment like this again, so we should keep this archived and preserved, with tender loving care, as it remains a a true musical and visual performance for the ages l

Lol, Keith ‘shadowboxing’ the drums during the intro…, Larry bursts out laughing at Pete at the exact time Entwistle does (laughs at Pete). Larry’s right, they ALL believed they were the ‘leader’ of the band 100%. Lead vocalist, lead drummer, lead guitarist, lead bass. They would try and outdo each other. “My amp’s too loud? Ok louder? Is that better…?” More volume… Keith would send splintering sticks flying across the stage at Roger, so Roger would swing his mic at Keith’s head-or just grab one of Keith’s cymbals and smash it with the mic. Then Keith would disassemble the drum kit mid song and throw the offending cymbal to the ground-DON’T touch my fu***ng cymbals, I’M the drummer. Pete, the ‘thoughtful, artistic, genius’ would be running around, tearing up the stage like a blood thirsty maniac-forgetting art-hellbent on making as much electronic noise as possible. John would stand there, the most fluid, musically gifted, well dressed, looking way too classy to get involved-except for the fact that he was playing through an amplifier rig that was so obnoxiously loud-it pretty much deafened the entire band. Good stuff guys, well done, you’re “feeling” The Who. Best wishes, thx for the entertaining content.

You two are sooo cute!! I like your relationship, equal partners, and I love your taste and reactions....in my book, since my first Who concert in 1971, they are the top live band of the entire world, period...and the best rock band ever to grace a stage. This recording from '79 was done for a film made by a fan (The Kids Are Alright) and the Who did this whole live performance as quintessential Who, in which they did indeed compete harder than ever with each other at the same time they knew how to telepathically understand each other's language and work together perfectly for the most outrageous and gorgeous outcome. It was Keith's last live show before he passed as well, and a world treasure in every way. Thank God for the Who....they've gotten me through my own crazy life...saw them eleven times over the years...even the first show at the Gorge in WA state they did just after John died, which turned out to be a testament to the fans as well as John, as Pete and Roger powered through their shock and grief, shared it all with their beloved fans and brought us all to tears. It took four guys to even come close to doing all that John used to do with his bass guitar alone. Long live the WHO!!!!!!!! Thanks, guys...you started my day right!

The surprising fact is Roger Daltrey had a broken back, before all the fame, that healed itself and he didn't find out until he was in his 60s. There is a story he's told out there about some guy in the audience that kept throwing pennies at Roger. He said it hurt. Plus, the pennies were all over the stage. He finally slung the mic and hit the guy on the top of his head. Pete now says Roger was the best performer for his art. Their performance in Vegas where they sang Tea & Theatre is really good after all the years together.

The what? Oh...The Who! Why? Because they're just that darned good, that's why! Can you believe they've been around 57 years now? Sure, they only released 3 albums in the last 39 of those years, but they still occasionally perform, which is amazing. One of the best rock bands of all time. Pete is also a great frontman...just check out some of his solo work. Not as good as Roger in the vocal department IMO, but he can hold his own pretty well. Anyways, great band, great song and a great performance here! For my suggestion, here is Temple Of The Dog - Say Hello To Heaven (Live) (kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYmyq3qPaZt8pJI). Cheers!

Wooo WHO!!! The Who! The good stuff. I’ve made some “Who” suggestions in the past…, glad to see you’re getting down with what truly made them “The Greatest Live Rock Band In The World”….; Their live act PRIOR to Keith Moon’s passing in 1978. I was totally gassed when you finally did the “Won’t Get Fooled Again-Shepperton”, Keith’s final glorious performance with the band, now this (from the same show).., awesome! There’s soooo much more… But maybe one more Ethan…? You and Larry watched an unfortunate cut from “Woodstock”, “Pinball Wizard” and were both a little understandably unimpressed, let down by the camera angles, lighting, etc…; Ethan…, sneak this one in on Larry (before it fades from memory given all the comments and requests you’re processing) and let’s give The Who one more chance to “prove”, redeem themselves and their brilliant, explosive Woodstock set. It’s a short instrumental from the “Tommy” Rock Opera. Townshend kicked the camera crew off the stage at Woodstock, so the filming quality of their Woodstock set is ‘hit or miss’ and this one’s a Home Run. You can even see a little streak of blood on Townshend’s left cheek towards the end (left there when he brushed his picking hand on his face). So if you’re still wondering what’s all the sh*t about The Who at Woodstock…? If I’m wrong I’ll give you my address up here in Sussex County and you can come up here and beat me in the head with a bag of oranges lol. Keep up the good work and best wishes to both of you. Here’s the link. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHnTlZaDja-dbbM

You'd both really love "The Hu" (rhymes with "The Who.") They're a Mongolian rock band. They did a cover of Metallica's "Sad But True." And Metallica tweeted a link to The Hu's cover! (Instead of filing a copyright claim, which would be their normal reaction.) You should definitely react to that, but I'd start with The Hu's original song "Wolf Totem," which is based on a centuries-old song written by a Mongolian prince for the purpose of inspiring his people to resist invasion of their homeland.

Yes, I have some other good live stuff to recommend. Rory Gallagher:kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZLdq4d8rb16m6c. This Who performance is a good example of a classic rock band demonstrating what happens when you play rock LIKE YOU MEAN IT. I think F alluded to this with the comment "Pete is playing this like he really believes it." The Gallagher performance suggested here is similar. I had to watch it again today. It does not get old. The energy on display is infectious and there is no vaccine available.
