This live version was recorded for The Who's documentary The Kids Are Alright. This was the last performance of drummer Keith Moon, who died of a drug overdose a few months later. The Who was one of the greatest live bands of all-time, and you're seeing a LOT of their signature moves in this video. Wild man drummer Moon, who attacked the drums like it was going out of style, lead vocalist Roger Daltrey with his wild microphone swirls and tosses, guitarist/main songwriter Pete Townshend with his windmill guitar riffs and jumping around on stage, and bassist, the late great John Entwistle (considered by many to be the best bass guitar player of all time) always standing there calm, cool and collected, the anchor that kept the rest of the band from flying off in every direction. In their earlier days, Pete would smash his guitar and Keith would destroy his drums at the end of every concert. They eventually outgrew that part of the show! The Who are my favorite rock band of all time.

I always thought John Entwistle looked like every part of his body was really stoned, except for his hands. His fingers moving so quickly over the strings of his bass. And yes, I remember seeing a ranked list of top bassists of all time not too long ago (I think it was by Rolling Stone) and Entwhistle was number one; Flea was ranked second.

You are watching a collection of musical geniuses. The singer Roger Daltrey has an incredible voice. The bassist, John Entwhistle is both a composer in his own right, and a world class bass player. Peter Townsend, the lead guitar is a composer like few others. Note the number of transitions in this piece, these were his doing. Keith Moon, the drummer, was probably the greatest drummer of that era. Keith, "Hey Pete, how many drums do you want me to play for this piece?. Pete, "All of them." The album, Who's Next, where this song was recorded, is unquestionably one of the top five rock albums ever produced.
@88wildcat2 жыл бұрын
People forget that Entwhistle was also a one man horn section in addition to being possibly the greatest bassist ever.

A former landlady of mine in Los Angeles was president of an orchestra and was/is totally into the music scene in LA (classical focused). She was able to get me into some almost private concerts at the top of a particular hotel on the Sunset Strip. One of those concerts was the Irish group The Chieftains. Who are amazing in their own right. At one point, Roger Daltry came on to the small stage, really right in front of me. He first sang a traditional Irish song with the Chieftains, then they all did Baba O'Reilly. It was brilliant. I could have met Mr. Daltrey, but my leg had been busted up (the foot almost torn off) and I was still recovering. Now the gruesome injury would have drawn his attention, but I was kind of tired, so I let the opportunity slip.

The Who evolved from a club act to a major arena act, and their live shows were stunning. Stunning in the sense that they played so freaking loud that the blows to your body from the sound waves would stun you. Roger Daltrey and Pete Townsend developed all sorts of exaggerated moves onstage that could be seen and enjoyed from the second balcony at the back of the arena. Jon Entwistle, the bass player, by contrast, barely moved. His frozen presence onstage was a sort of joke in its counterpoint to the frantic antics of the other three guys. The drummer, Keith Moon, was very unorthodox in his technique, which I'd describe as continuous fills with a regular beat hidden within them. He made a hell of a lot of noise with his kit which contributed to the unique and very full sound of The Who. Moon lived very hard, and partied very hard, and died young.

The WHO….. “The Kids Are Alright” Tour 1989. Rich Stadium Buffalo N.Y…….. AWESOME After the concert the Who were being interviewed on the local radio station and the DJ asked the band…. “So what do you think about that new RAP music coming out”…. Roger Daltrey laughed and started to answer when John Entwistle said….. “let me answer this one….. It seems to me that if you can’t write music, can’t play music, can’t sing music, if you know absolutely nothing at all about music, well then, you do rap now don’t you”….. Then. Pete Townshend said….. “If Hitler was going to come back and torture the world again he would use rap music. Roger Daltrey laughed and said…. “Isn’t that the truth”....... 1980.… KLOS RADIO in L.A. Survey…. Greatest Male Rock Vocalist….#1 Robert Plant- Led Zeppelin #2 Roger Daltrey-The WHO #3 Steve Perry- Journey #4 John Lennon- The Beatles #5 Mick Jagger- Rolling Stones.

The Who's hallmark was their intensity. The best concert I ever saw was them in '75. A half hour after the show ended, a significant part of the crowd was still staring at the empty stage with a "what the fock did I just see!" look on their (our) faces!))

Song was written by the guitarist Pete Townshend... delivered vocally by singer Roger Daltrey. The Who were a unique, explosive band... formed in England in the 60's... John Entwistle on bass, Keith Moon on drums... the original band. Tragically, Keith Moon died shortly after this was filmed in 1978. The Who continued w/ different drummers... but it was not the same. John Entwistle died in 2002 just after The Who played the Concert for New York City in '01 and stole the show that night! Townshend & Daltrey have kept The Who active w/ touring members... but the original band is still the legendary band in rock n roll history🔥🤘

So The Who came about in the early to mid 60's....their early stuff was a lot different than their later jams...but they have a very large catalog. Also....4 of the best to ever do it....(spelling aside) Roger Daultry on vocals (who used to swing his mic and occasionally hit other band members), Pete Townsend on guitar (one of the best to ever play), John Entwistle on bass, and Keith Moon on drums (arguably one of the best drummers of all time). This is highly debated to be true or not, but allegedly Keith Moon and Jimmy Page were having a "luncheon" or what have you and Page was talking about leaving his current band "The Yardbirds" (or maybe "The New Yardbirds"...memory is kinda hazy) to start a new band. Keith Moon said that the band would go out like a "lead balloon." Thus, that's how "Led Zeppelin" came about. In either case, The Who is one of the greatest bands of all time and have put out some serious bangers!
