This was a breath of fresh air!!! I'm so sick of these newer people down playing Crowley's contributions to feminism and saying he was just abusing and leading mindless "poor woman" into the abyss. Its actually caused me to stop talking to people about the subject because I'm so sick of such narrow views. They've even started in on Gerald Gardner who founded Wicca in England. Thank you so much Dr. Angela for bringing us this great interview. I particularly appreciated Dr. Manon's survey of how the conceptions of the Babalon and the Scarlet Women have continued to evolve into the contemporary, post-Crowley period. Understandably, so much that is written about Thelemic topics tend to fixate almost exclusively on Uncle Al, so it is really refreshing to see a scholarly overview of more contemporary innovations. Though I personally do not identify as a Thelemite, your interview revealed that it is not simply a fly trapped in early 20th century amber, but a vital and transformative spiritual tradition. A similar process happened to the brazilian entity Pombagira. Decades ago she was called "the woman with seven husbands" wich was a reference to promiscuity, and she was invocated on manipulative love spells. After the rise of third wave feminism, Pombagira is now celebrated as a symbol of female empowerment and sexual liberation.

@@shelbyspeaks3287 The word husband here is not to be taken literally, it actually stands for partner. So it's not about cheating, but it is about sexual liberation. @@shelbyspeaks3287 ..Sexual liberation is not about cheating on your spouse or living in a broken home.. these things are not sexual liberation, these things have nothing to do with it, in fact. If you feel sexual liberation is about cheating or broken homes, you are wrong, you don't get it and so are taking it wrongly, sexual liberation is not about these things and never has been a part of the liberation of our sexuality. Liberating our sexuality is just about accepting our feelings, our sexual urges as being natural, and not feeling shame for a natural part of being human, as being human means having sexual urges. It does not mean to throw away our morals for sexual liberation. If you feel that sexual liberation is a permission slip to cheat on your partner, you are not understanding any of what it is actually about. It is about accepting yourself fully, instead of shaming, feeling guilt, and pushing away what is inside you, to instead embrace your whole being. It does not mean to cheat on your partner, it just means accepting you have a sexual side and not feeling shame over that fact. Sexual liberation does not mean you have to act on this sexual side always, but, maybe you do want to, it depends on what you want to do as everyone is different. But like with everything, discernment is needed. But sexual liberation does not mean you will always act upon your sexual feelings. It is just an acceptance of these feelings, instead of shoving them deep down. But, the idea of sexual liberation, to me, is just about an acceptance of your natural desires. Whether you act upon these desires or not, is down to the person's individual self. But sexual liberation is not about being promiscuous to me. It may make you promiscuous, depending on the type of person you are, but that is down to freedom of choice after you have liberated yourself from shame and guilt, when you have acceptance of being a sexual being. A sexually liberated person can be in a happy relationship, married, monogamous, and never cheats, religious and has children. Or they can be in an open relationship, or poly, and have sexual experiences with whoever they want. It depends on the type of person. Sexual liberation does not always mean promiscuous. Some women who are sexually liberated may be promiscuous, but not all women who are sexually liberated are and will be promiscuous. Sexual liberation does not equal promiscuous. I have no problem with the women who are, it is their life, not mine. But i just wanted to say that, a woman who has a lot of sex with people, it is down to personal freedom of choice, not actually the sexual liberation. A person who is promiscuous can also be far from sexually liberated. It is a feeling inside yourself. If someone doesn't accept their sexuality, feels guilt or shame, regardless of how much or how little sex they have, they are not sexually liberated, as they are still hiding from themselves. And that can happen, even if someone has a lot of sex, they can still feel guilt and shame and are not sexually liberated in themselves, some people do not know themselves, their sexuality, but still have a lot of sex regardless. Some people are not sexually liberated and empowered, despite having a lot of sex. Sorry for the long post. Lol. This is a deep topic to me.

Another amazing lecture , many thx girls. I was watching the kingdom of the 9 gates again and the conversation came up. And the character played by Polanski's wife as the scarlet woman was brilliant , but it was the first time I ever saw the Harlet played in a film. Although many thought she was a demon or an angel , but it was obvious to me she was the Harlet because she was shown twice in that film riding the beast. I remembered the this scarlet woman from revelations. Polanski knew exactly what he was doing with every scene in that film. The symbolism is there if you can recognize it when you see it. I think he did an amazing job on that film with all the characters. And being a painter I'm always keen to see how others portray certain theological symbols in paintings and film. I draw my research from many different sources to get an idea I'm working on. The many tarot decks are a good example of that.

I love your interpretation and the idea of Babalon being representative of feminine empowerment. One thing I really struggle with is that Thelema is specifically solar-phallic. It seems from Crowely's writing that Babalon is nothing more than a gateway to Christ and the Holy Trinity. He specifically mentions this in the Gnostic Mass and in Magick in Theory and Practice, along with the Book of Thoth. Is it really possible to be both a solar-phallic religion that honors the old Aeon Christ/Father/Son/Holy Spirit concepts and still be favorable to women and the Divine Feminine?

00:22:33 In Jan Assman's book: Moses the Egyptian he floats the idea which he calls Normative Inversion, wherein one religion intverts what is sacred or taboo from the religion its competeing against. If their holy day is Saturday, you make your's Sunday. If they consider the donkey evil, its sacred in yours. If they venerate the ram, you sacrifice rams. This also seems to tie in to Nietzsche's Master/Slave dichotomy where the underclass subverts what the ruling class calls Evil and makes it the Good. I wonder how much of what passes for religion is just s*** talking about the other guy.

The human mind seems to find it difficult to unite opposites. This challenge for the feminine manifests in how to overcome the impasse of the Madonna [Logos] and Whore [Eros] dichotomy. Maybe one answer could be found in the very coincidentia oppositorum or the integration of these two polarities into a self that is as real as it is shadowy and thus not defined by either archetype but allows for both. Interesting is the fact that the feminine mind or soul/animus seems to struggle more with these polar archetypes than the masculine. For the masculine mind or soul/anima the confrontation seems to stem from trying to integrate another coincidentia oppositorum that of the feminine with the masculine at the soul level as the Great Androgyne or Rebis.

A much simpler Understanding of Babalon and Scarlet Woman is in Crowley's exploration of the four parts of the cabalistic soul. Specifically the Ruach and Nephesch. Ruach is the beast, the scarlet woman, ones Nephesch. Previously Nephesch was a degraded idea the "animal soul" Crowley Understood to elevate this function of our being. Thus one's mind and habits together form something more than the parts. As in Ac's reading of ihvh as being a formula, unite sun and moon. Just a thought.

Well if a woman commented that they were crushing on me, while I discussed smart stuff, I wouldn't see it as demeaning. Or shoot her down for it. That would come off as highly rude to anyone spectating it. I think it's lost on people just how much rejection men have to handle, and take it, or else they're not being "manly". As if our personhood doesn't matter. So maybe just take it as a simple compliment and don't enflame meaning into it. Especially if you can reverse the roles and find that it doesn't hold up. Nothing inappropriate was actually said anyway.

Maybe, Crowley expected a confusion of ideas concerning what Babylon represents on a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level. The Initiation of Binah and The Master of the Temple are in the formula of Tetragrammeton, the archetypal, creative, formative and material levels of existence. Babylon is the veil between duality and reconciliation of the opposites above the Abyss. Penetration in sexual activity and Penetration of the veil of Babylon are not to be confused on the planes of existence, or so it is said. It is said that The Word of the Master of the Temple will not be Understood by those below The Abyss.

Very underrated post. Many are far too held up with the image of Babalon and it informing mere current gender battlegrounds, when what She truly is is beyond all this entirely - even though ofc the Aeon would see her image drifting down into confusion and almost dispersion below the Abyss. Reminds me of the vision of Lilith in the Third Aethyr. Babalon as conceived by the Dark Sisters... The intellectual shut up rationalist vision of something that can not be intellectualised. It'll take time. We are nowhere near 'there' yet.

Thank you for your work and great interview.Regarding does the scarlet women need to be female?.Yes for the fact that a woman can fully embody love light and show the pleasure of that realization through her body on levels far far exceeding the male, who represents the conscious aspect of conscious light. She also can reflect the lack of conscious that is ignorant in the moment in the male by means of wrath and disgust, hence inspiring the male to a deeper understanding of how he is conscious.Though one can identify on the mental plain as either or,they will not be able to embody the respective roles bodily.During the sex act which is a microcosm of the macrocosm, the male can absorb that pleasure offered by the woman who is reflecting how the male consciousness is effecting her and unite as conscious light.Of course the female has to be connected and identified as that love light. In temples men would have to meditate for years to be even allowed to enter these temples and woman had to train to move love through their bodies to reflect that love. Thanks once again Angela

what is for me lacking in the understanding of everyone I listening so far on this ropic , is the outer manifestations of parson's magickal practice on the world of magick begating technology. Let talk about the science of rockets. what does it represents symbolicly? and in terms of balancing the masculine and feminine energy-consciousness of humanity as a whole? magic - science feminine - masculine dark - light I Am Is all that Is embrace both polarities and bring them back home. to ONENESS.

Nema's ideas of an Aeon of Ma'at running at the same time as the Aeon of Horus are bizarre and speak of someone wishing to occupy the position of a Prophet. There are plenty of Magicians who are recipients to divine revelations. There's one on every corner.

When answering the question asked about Ezekiel's influence on Crowley's Babalon I was immediately reminded of David Halperin's 'Seeking Ezekiel Text and Psychology'. The text tries to refine Edwin Browne's view of Ezelei as schizophrenic linked with negative views attributed to Ezekiel's text of female sexuality.

Slander as leverage against a particular group of people is used in politics as well as in religion. I don't think it's wrong to expect a higher level of mud throwers to be more disciplined in opposition to varying opinions. If you're going to criticise, at least don't lie. I mean this about criticism of Crowley.

Interesting video. My mother was in the theosophical society and at one time she had all the texts from our region in our house. For me it was all nonsense.😎 Im not really interested in the Aliester Crowly, but their are two interest here. The first is the divine feminie. From a pure paleoanthropological and archeological point of view the divine feminine emerges as fetishes, headless entities that represent fertility and growth and these figures can be recognized from the beginning of our species. And yet even in this symbolism there is almosr equally old evidence for the sexual female, the sculptures of male phallus. But the clearest distinction comes with the Mesopotamian beliefs that begin with these gods and goddeses like ge, gaia, ki, ninhursag as functional god producers and there more heavenly mates. For example Anu, Enlil, Enki and the older Absu as representing these power gods. Anunnuki "The children of heaven and earth" its clear Anu is the lord of the heaven, but its not so clear who ki is or her role. By the 24th century BCE we see the rise to prominence of the powerful female god Innana, while it is her in the role of a diva, the mistress of the heaven is not the wife of Anu, but his grandaughter through Enlil (Sometimes Enki). Motherly love is not her domian, she is a seductress. Although she does have a couple of progeny, she is most well know for her various attemps to seduce her father, uncle, grandfather. Shes also known for her reckless attempt to dominate the underworld, forgeting she needed to take more clothes than she was used to wearing. There is a final goddess that deserves mention. Kub'uba was a messianic figure that initiated the 3rd Age of Kish by defying the rulers of the day and providing tribute to the temple at Eridu. She was deified to the goddess Kh'eba, a sort of powerful female wisdom goddess throughout anatolia and northern canaan. Some of the association of wisdom with female may stem from Kh'eba. By the early biblical period, the late bronze age collapse, the poweful represenations had further divided, asherah is now a formal wife of god of both El Elyon and Yahweh. Anat takes on the role of Goddess of war and consort of Ba'al Hadat. There is actually reference to Beth Anat and one of her devotees, a judge, Shangar of Anath. Shangar is also linked to the story of the female Israelite Judge Deborah and appears to be the oldest poetic account in the bible. Astarte is the gender uncertian diety that associates with temple prostitution, also recognizes in the biblical story of Tamar and Judah during a time, probably for mystical readons, where temple prostitues were respected. Some people associate the biblical Eve figure with Kh'eba. The defiance of the woman serving the temple, the plucking the apple from the tree. She of course is key to the founding of Kish III whereas Eve is critical to this first age of biblical humans. The second interest is in esoteric mysticism and the higher role women had as mystics in early civilization. As mentioned Sophia, Cybele, and the Oracles from Thebes and Delphi.

Why does the Scarlett woman have to be a woman? It's because of how their energy systems work. The female is a chalice and her energy is centrifugal and the male energy is centripetal. Their respective organs reflect their energy systems, you cannot get the same alchemical reaction otherwise. If you want to get really simple about it, if you have an electric plug and it's corresponding outlet, that's how it works. The charge is generated when the sexual organs interact and the conduit is the sexual fluid which is why you cannot replicate this process using a phallus to anus.

The problem with this philosophy is the lack of sacrifice and delay of instant gratification that is perpetuated by this interpretation of Aleisters work. Manipulation does nothing to further this cause and as to paraphrase Nietzsche you turning Thelma into nothing more than another religion of resentment as was Christianity for the first 1000 years or so. This is why I urge people to ditch nomenclature’s and ego badges to actually find real objective truth. In my final meeting with the purple lady (dmt and psilocybin experience) she laughed as humanities attempt (as I laughed with her explanation) to try to overcomplicate everything in this last moments of the age of Horus. No one will escape the beginning of Maats judgement. Those who refuse to sacrifice, delay instant gratification and use manipulation to control others (and refuse to exercise this on an individual level) will not be granted entrance into the next age. It’s what the purple lady warned me of (and reconfirmed in a dream a year later that the hour is drawing closer with the Floods in Europe and Germany.)

Thanks for your comment and I agree with your sentiment. The wholly communion of the sex act has been reduced to a self centered act of pleasure for ones self, rather than service to the divine.Even identifying as a multitude of genders is an egoic distortion of the polarities and serves confusion.

No he's referring to semen not actual children. I know the line you're referring to. It’s not Crowley’s vision. It was given to him by the Goddess Nuit, this is the vision of the Gods. The “Beast” represents the physical man; the man and woman who seeks power and strength in this world. The “Scarlet Woman” is the society in which the Beast operates and the established life, culture and beliefs of the fools.
