Madonna was the IT girl at the time and then comes out with this spoken word song (teaming up with Lenny Kravitz btw) and then the VIDEO hit and was banned by MTV which was the only source to watch music videos in the day. It was National news (Dateline Interview). Madonna decided to release the video as the first ever Video single on VHS. The song went to number 1 and the video sold millions.

What astounds me most is that 34 years after its release this video still irritates people and also the reaction is the same for decades. People eighter love it or hate it many laugh and make fun of it - often to distract 1) from their own insecurities or 2) the fact that they like what they're seeing. What you see as nasty, is Madonna using her brand to wake people up and get over their hang ups about sexuality of all backgrounds. She was one of the most brave and daring artist to touch on issues that made people feel uncomfortable. And, sidenote, Hip Hop has the "nasty" quality to it, so maybe react to some of those videos that show booties across the bouncin around. This was all about fantasy. She wanted to shock people and wake them up, and it seemed to work in 1991 and it still baffles some today. She is the Queen for that reason and has been and always will be.
