This is tame. She went through a hypersexual phase in her music in the 1990s. When "Ray of Light" came out, her music took a whole other turn, and then when "Music" came out there was another turn in her music. She also took vocal lessons when she did "Evita" and I think most people would agree that her vocals became more amazing in her works after that.

She actually had to go on ABC News (who were the ONLY people who actually played the video on TV!) and spend like 20 minutes defending herself and explaining why she made such a provocative video. I'm sure that whole experience is what inspired Erotica and the Sex book. She realized just how uptight America was and made it her mission to do something about it.

I was a teenager in the 80's and I really wasn't a fan of most of the music or the "cookie cutter" pop princesses. But, Madonna!?! She was different! She was bold! She was unapologetic! She stayed real and true to the type of artist she wanted to be and has remained relevant since because she flipped off the record execs that wanted to change her and did it her way! Fun Facts: Lenny Kravitz helped Madonna write and produce this sultry song, where Madonna whispers most of the lyrics. It was the first single from her highly anticipated Immaculate Collection compilation album, and created plenty of sales-generating controversy for the singer, who was known for pushing the limits of sexual content. Ingrid Chavez, a singer who had worked with Prince, sued for royalties, claiming she wrote the song with Kravitz. According to Chavez, Kravitz came up with the title, but the rest of the lyric - minus one line Madonna changed - came from her. "Lenny recorded a synth line and then he asked me if I had something I wanted to say," she told Vibe. "I had a letter on me (my letters are like poems) and so I got on the mic and basically read the letter. One take and the rest is history." The case was settled out of court in 1992, with Chavez getting a composer credit along with Kravitz and Madonna. This samples a beat from a Public Enemy song called "Security Of The First World," an instrumental from their album It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back, which in turn samples "Ashley's Roachclip," a 1974 track by The Soul Searchers that has been used hundreds of times. Public Enemy used many samples themselves and had no claim to the original beat, so they didn't sue Madonna or Kravitz. Public Enemy's producer, Hank Shocklee, capitalized on the publicity by having a group called the Young Black Teenagers record an answer song using the same beat called "To My Donna." The video contains partial nudity - a female dancer flashes a bit of nipple under her suspenders. MTV banned it, but eventually agreed to play it late at night. With the controversy brewing over the video, ABC aired it on Nightline, with anchor Forrest Sawyer asking Madonna questions about the video as it ran. It was unusual for an entertainment story to be the focus of Nightline, but this one made the news because it raised censorship issues. It also didn't hurt that Madonna was a huge star and was sure to draw lots of viewers. While the video played, Madonna talked about how women in her videos are always in control sexually. The video was directed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino, who had a photography/graphic design background and made clips that looked more like art films. He usually worked in black-and-white, which he did here and also in his other famous video: Don Henley's "The Boys of Summer." The clip was shot at a Paris hotel and featured Madonna's boyfriend at the time, Tony Ward. After the video was banned by MTV, it was released for sale on VHS. In an era when your phone can play just about any video with a few taps of the glass it's hard to comprehend, but in the early '90s people would buy certain music videos to play on their VCRs. This one sold well thanks to the controversy (and the low, low price of $9.98), eventually selling over one million copies.

From the first video I saw of hers which was “Burning Up” to “Cherish” to “Take a Bow” to “The Power of Goodbye” and so much more. When she was interviewed early in her career she was asked something like what are your plans as far as your career and she quickly stated “I have the same goal I’ve had since I was a girl. I want to rule the world”. You have to respect someone who has stayed relevant and continues to stay two steps ahead of us all. Thank you! ❤️

Madonna is so versatile...looks, sounds, album style...everything is top of the line, bravest and most artistic of any pop star. She just marches to her own beat but the thing that unites her entire catalog as an artist is her mind. That will never be replicated. I've been a huge fan since about 2001 and she never stops surprising me or making me think about how important she is to culture. She's opened so many minds to something new. She couldn't have done that without having been super popular and always cool at the very beginning. She took that popularity and switched it up on everyone by the early 90s.

*I think what you were trying to say (through your blushes), was that you don't know of any other artist who has had the ability to **_"re-invent"_** their on-stage/on-screen persona, quite like Madonna has been able to do through her career. And I completely agree with you. That said, she's not entirely unique in having that ability. For example, check out the stage/video persona of the late great David Bowie, decade by decade from the 1960s, right through to the 2010s. But off the top of my head, those are the only two artists who immediately spring to mind in having such a diverse collection of on-stage characters. Great channel by the way!*

This was the first video banned by MTV. She was decades ahead of her time. She is the greatest live performer of all time, if you want to see her artistry and athleticism, react to her tours. Your viewership will double. I swear it!

One of my favorite songs and videos by her. Back then they wouldn’t show this video on tv, so she had it packaged and sold.

This track was on the Immaculate Collection 'best of' album, and was one of two trqcks (the other being Rescue Me) that only appeared on this album or as singles and were not included on any other album..however you are right in the timeline, this single was released between the Vogue and Erotica eras, and marks a transition in Madonnas career. Really enjoying your reactions pal, thanks for sharing them

3:46 Now listen Madonna's song Ray of Light :) This is a song from the 1990 album 'The Immaculate Collection'. 5:15 Yeah, you listed the song 'Vogue' already from this album. The year 1990 was great. You should also listen the song 'Deep in Vogue' from Malcom McLaren's album 'Waltz Darling' (1989) so you get more understand what the "vogue" meant.

She always pushed the envelope and let people know hey, this is how I express/ make my music. It was always art to her and the form of visual, lyrical, etc.... She had a lot of strength to do a lot of that, especially when it was looked down upon.

Your genuine openness to Madonna really makes you so awesome. You are open to it all…even other artists you’ve watched. I genuinely love your energy. You seem like such a wonderful guy! Keep it up! I wish everyone was as open as you are to music/art/expression. You aren’t running away from it because of the sexual element. You hear it out and enjoy it! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
