My fondest memory of this game was going to the arcades that me and my cousins frequently visited. We had a blast playing and was blown away by the characters shown in the game including cable,thanos, akuma and rubyheart. I really like the headcanon and details you talked about here in this video. It feels like a real nostalgia trip when looking at the stages. I do feel that rubyheart is the indirect protagonist for this game since a majority of the stages involved her airship and the end credits with the characters interacting with each other. Amingo i feel is definitely one of her canon tag partners and the desert stage being his home too. My favorite stages are personally the clocktower with the snow all over, the airship at night and the carnival stage with the very familiar clown head in the middle xD. Great video as always. Aside from the nice, calm tone, I love how she doesn't throw the occasional lame-ass joke/pun throughout, as so many other narrators feel compelled to. While some of her takes seem like reaches, she clarifies that those takes may just be her overthinking, which I appreciated, as many others might have just acted as though they had an "inside scoop" regarding the source of their theories. Anyway, I really appreciated this. No misleading title or thumbnail, no ads, no obnoxious "SMASH THAT SUBSCRIBE BUTTON" bullshit. It was also released at a time when most fighting games were following the 3D craze and at this time in the industry anything 2D was seen as “old” and “outdated” and I’m glad over the years we were able to move past that.

There were just 24 characters at the start, and fan favorites like Chun-Li and Magneto seemed to be missing, but Dr. Doom coming back after a long absence still made me hopeful. And those 24 characters were surrounded by hidden character boxes, so there was obviously some way to unlock them. I played through Arcade Mode multiple times with multiple teams trying to get more and more of them unlocked. It didn't seem to move the needle much, but I did notice before long that more characters would show up seemingly each weekend I went to the arcade.

The carnival stage is in all four routes, with it appearing in Stage 4 of the Airship route, Stage 2 of the Rocky Desert route, Stage 1 in the Carnival route and Stage 6 of the Clock Tower route. Also, the PS3/360 ports always chooses the Carnival route upon bootup, and forces Omega Red (Alpha), Colossus (Alpha) and Doctor Doom (Gamma) as the enemy team in the first stage. Just what was Backbone even thinking?

Specifically, the battle music depended on that character's series. If it's a Chaos Wars original character, a looped arrangement of Sound Horizon's "Endia and the Nights" played. If a Spectral character is up, then music inspired by the Spectral series will play. If a Shadow Hearts character has his or her turn, then music inspired by the Shadow Hearts series will play. If I can bring a suggestion, you may enjoy dissecting the stages from the Persona 4 Arena series. There's a lot of minute details and presentation features. There's also a lot of story elements to them (some of which could be considered spoilers since some stages are from the original RPG series). Regular players often refer to most stages by name: "school at night," "music room," and "altar stage" Since it was a collab with Arc System Works, it shares similar features from the BlazBlue series (another case study) and even shared some in BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle.

Thank you so much for your kind words! I love Persona so it’s very likely I will cover arena and the smash stage at some point luckily I know the lore very well so it won’t be as intimidating as covering a game like guilty gear or Blaz blu

6:26 If a reskin happened, I could picture it the same as the normal variant, but everything is frozen and covered in ice, preventing any operation in the factory. No rats would move on the bridge since the factory would have been frozen anyways.

ive always wondered what was the reason behind some of the stages, and i particularly hated the clown alternate stage since it was just less saturated in my own opinion. Really nice analysis, great vid!

So strange to remember people saying they thought the stages and music was bad. I remember this game standing out so much from every other fighting game because of the stages and music. I think having that quality definitely pushed people to put more coins into the cabinets. I'm not sure how I ended up, but you got yourself a new sub

I agree on top of the huge roster I think even the casual passerby would see this game at the time and be blown away by how different it was to what they normally play in a fighter

I have been waiting for a high quality content creator to finally put some respect on SonSon's stage as someone who was briefly obsessed with journey to the west and inspired media during my teen years (because i love SonSon as a character so much lol). Even better to have it come from an actual Chinese person (correct me and apologies if I'm wrong) who grew up on even more Journey to the West media herself and can lay down some firsthand cultural knowledge about the stage. My favorite in the game by far. Clock tower has the best music still though lol. Edit: don't forget about Buddha's hand in the background, big reference to his famous bet with Wukong

Thank you so much! I am 100 percent Chinese so no worries. Also thanks for the heads up on Buddha’s hand I completely missed that reference!

@MagillanicaLou: So that was the hand part of a statue in the background of that stage after all. Thanks for clarifying!

Great video! I recon that the MvC2 amusement park stage may be a callback to Marvel Super Heroes' Hulk's home stage; which takes place on a carousel, also in an amusement park. The carousel in that stage at first is inactive, but as the battle goes on it starts to light up, moves and appears to be simulated as you get a scrolling-type effect/view of the rest of the park. I think the stage artists definitely wanted to go all out with the aesthetics of the attractions of the MvC2 AP stage, and you're right: to do this they wanted to take advantage of the hardware they were using at the time 🎠
@baberuthless Жыл бұрын
It very well could be a call back but it’s so wildly different than that stage I think it might be pure coincidence but who knows for sure I wish there was more documentation on the development of this game

10:15 "You can see a bird, maybe a falcon, flying around..." My first thought was that was a vulture because I thought I could see the tale-tell neck of a vulture, but I decided to check and slow down the footage... yeah I have no idea what that is. Maybe its there to deliver some falcon punch.

Had no idea that their was story depth behind these stages tho I'm not big into MVC I do like and appreciate the effort that went into their stages across each game, same for the music, atmosphere and aesthetics and u explained it into full detail.😊💖💯 And as you said if only these devs and publishers can replicate wonderous creativity of their old FGs into their new ones. I can say same the same from a gameplay perspective too. I would love to see you cover some KOF stages and CVS2 stages too I'm more into KOF and Fatal Fury but I still like and appreciate SF and the Capcom VS games but out of the 2 I do play SF. SNK is also the best in the business with their FGs when it comes to the amount of detail in their stages tho they've been using the same hardware but they pushed the Neo Geo to their limits and made so many amazing stuff in the 90's that fans still revere and hold dare to this day. Me personally I grew up with their stuff in the 2000's since I'm a bit younger I played KOF 2000, 2001, Metal Slug 5 and 6 on the PSP. Didn't get play the other stuff such as SS5S KOF 2002,2003 & 11 NGBC the KOF MI games etc. U earned yourself a sub 💯💯✨✨💖💖

The Airship stage is heavily reminiscent of the Dr. Doom stage from the original MSH. Compare the perspective of the ship, the fact that both vessels have a mast in the middle of the stage, the turbines, and the fact that the stage gets clearer and more iluminated as the fight goes on. I can't believe no one seems to ever notice this detail.

I am a snooty, elitist, classically trained musician with a DMA in Piano, and I LOVE AND ALWAYS LOVED the music from MVC2! Thank you for the breakdown! I didn't have many fellow players of MVC2 (I had some lonely teen years), but those who knew the game, hated the music, and I thought they were crazy.

Thank you for saying that I’m happy you liked it! Also yes they are crazy for disliking it 😂

I always dug this music. Here's what I've told people for years: this game was always a giant joke, a fun lark, a big fat carnival. Over-the-top fighting action way outside the scope of the characters' own universes, without regard to things like balance and strategy. The things that inspired M.U.G.E.N. This presentation, music and all, was 150% appropriate!

A few months late, but I enjoyed the video. The stages always felt a bit randomn to me, but you put some clarity to it. With so many characters and virtually no emphasis on story, it was easy forget that Ruby Heart was the main character even though the credits had people sailing on her ship. At the very least, the choose your character song of "I'm going to take you for a ride" won't feel so out of place. It actually makes sense given the context.

The Swamp Stage was my fave in the visuals and especially the music. When I was still little I used to go to the training mode, choose the Swamp Stage and just chill. Now I put it on full blast while going on a long car ride or when commuting at night.

About mention of "Tim Burton vibes" in the carnival stage: I actually noticed the same and made a stage mod of the stage called "Carnival Stage: Halloween Land" that people can download for Naomi/Dreamcast a few weeks ago where the ghosts become Jack Skellington. So uh... well TLDR it's cool to see I was not alone on noticing this (!)
@baberuthless Жыл бұрын
I’ll certainly have to check that out! I was actually completely unaware of the modding scene for MVC2, mostly because I didn’t even know this game could be modded. I’ll definitely have to seek out your stage mod ☺️

@@baberuthless awesome!! if it's confusing at all, please let me know of anything at all about that. It was pretty new and I was just wrapping up initial development phrase (not to mention as you know... things like 3D stages in 23 year old video games are kind of niche). In terms of the mods most cool stuff has really started accelerating in the last two years, but it may be a little bit technical and need to be broken down better for everyone to access it commonly outside of Fightcade. Best thing I can suggest is to search "Paxtez MVC2 Mod Tool". In terms of the app, I was trying to do something moder user-friendly from what's typically found in ROM hack communities (since it's a big part of my job IRL), and it's also just for people interested in viewing which is a huge coincidence with your vids on it sharing the same sort of stuff. Anyway, don't want to take away from your video here either and trying my best not to shill direct links or anything... appreciate you checking it out/tolerating the comments and fantastic work once again. I actually subbed before these vids since this is really good content, but lit up a bit with this particular video and had to mention it haha.
