Babies Are Born With Special Survival Skills: Primitive Reflexes

Күн бұрын

Babies come hardcoded with a constantly updating operating system that has some special features called PRIMITIVE REFLEXES.
These are not mere bonus easter eggs but a key part of gameplay although they are patched after a few months and can no longer be accessed. They exist to help the otherwise very stupid baby find milk and stay close to its mama.
Primitive reflexes form part of every baby examination, first to make sure they are present, and then to make sure they have gone by the right age.
We share many of these in-built reflexes with most mammals so they're also a fascinating and fairly cute window into evolution.
NB - I'm not a paediatrician so please don't take everything I say as gospel. I mean, you shouldn't really listen to me at the best of times. About anything. Even cardiology.
If you have any medical queries, please don't direct them at me as it's very possible I got my medical degree in the post from the Club Medschool, please consult a real life doctor.

The enjoying "being tossed about" made me laugh. My daughter loved it too, and got to a point where she would actually fling herself backwards while sitting on someone's lap, expecting to be caught. It was normally fine, but one time she did it when the SO wasn't expecting it and managed to hit the edge of an island counter, splitting her head open. She needed six stitches after normal doctor hours, but handled it like a champ. I, on the other hand... Fortunately we can look back on it and laugh.

because everyone has a quantum computer lying around
@Yotanido
@Yotanido 5 жыл бұрын
@@vlc-cosplayer This might be a bit more in-depth than you bargained for, but here you go: Some (but not all) public key cryptography algorithms could be broken if factorising large numbers into their prime constituents becomes viable. quantum computers are thought to be able to do just that. However, there is currently no quantum computer that comes even close. The last time I checked (which, admittedly is a couple of years ago), the largest number ever broken down into prime factors on a quantum computer was lower than 30. Definitely not a large number. (We are talking 300 digits and more) Algorithms using elliptic curves were invented specifically to thwart quantum computing attacks. SSH does indeed allow the use of public keys and is the recommended option. You can use RSA (preferred) or DSA - two different algorithms. Both of which are thought to be crackable with quantum computers. The way it works is: You have two key files. One secret, the other public. You give your public key out to whoever wants it, really, and they can use that to authorise you. To identify you, the service you are trying to log in to (like an SSH server) will encrypt a challenge using your public key and send you the encrypted result. You then have to take your private key to decrypt it and send it back. If what you send back matches what was initially encrypted, you have proven your identity. Note that the public key cannot be used to decrypt and it cannot be used to determine the private key. Also note that sometimes it is done the opposite way - you encrypt the value using the private key and it is decrypted with the public key. Depends on the algorithm. (In that case, obviously, encrypting with the public key is not possible. This is also used for digital signatures) Now the next question would be how you can get this to work in the browser. Luckily, browsers already support this! It's a feature almost never used, but it does exist. You are connecting to websites using HTTPS, which is HTTP secured by TLS. TLS has quite a few jobs, but the important ones are, that it encrypts your connection to the website and it ensures that the website you are connecting to is actually the one you want. To this end, the website has to provide a certificate, which was given to them by a certificate authority that your browser trusts. It will check the digital signature on the certificate, make sure the CA that signed it is trusted, that the certificate matches the domain it is connecting to and that it is still valid. That is a server certificate. TLS can do the same thing for the client, though. When connecting, you can present the server with a certificate of your own to prove your identity. You simply need to provide the server with the fingerprint of your certificate and it can be used to validate your identity. Funnily enough, browsers can already do this. I have only ever seen this once, but the browser can be instructed to create a new certificate for a website and subsequently use that to log in. So why is nobody using it? Pretty simple, honestly. While public key cryptography is vastly superior to passwords in almost every way, one part where it is extreme lacking is convenience. It is hard to set up for the website host. It is unusual for the user. Users might be prone to losing the key file, locking them out. Users might not know how to get access from a new computer, etc. Passwords are just easier. Considering the most commonly used password is 12345, I highly doubt better security is very important to most people and so we are stuck with passwords for the foreseeable future. On the bright side, with a password manager and websites that don't limit your password to 6 characters or less like my bank (no joke), password login can be reasonably safe.
@franciscocastro4017
@franciscocastro4017 5 жыл бұрын
@@vlc-cosplayer don't forget that for using passwords securely we have to send them in an encrypted channel. Channels whose session keys are usually established by using public key crypto. Challenge response may help though (specially if the decryption isn't immediate).

The grasping reflex also works with the baby's feet, although it's totally useless since they are now, well, feet. They just kind of curl their toes in response. My mother is a midwife, and one time the father of a newborn asked her why the newborn curled its feet like that, as they were testing the reflex. My mother explained that it is a vestigial reflex from a time when our monkey feet hadn't evolved into human feet yet, and its purpose was to help the infant grasp its mother's fur. The father, being a religious, creationist type, of course didn't accept this explanation.
@MedlifeCrisis
@MedlifeCrisis 5 жыл бұрын
Yes that is correct, it's the same reflex - grasp - sometimes referred to as palmar. In young babies with very flexible feet due to minimal bone ossification, you can put a finger in the flat of their sole and they'll curl around it.

take a moment to appreciate the survival skills you have. That you struggle and survive is living proof of that. What you want is not survival but happiness. And that is the moment where it's best to go deeper into yourself because life is struggle. Sooner or later everyone gets confronted with that and the only way to resolve this problem is by finding the resolve in yourself (or at least some higher ideal to pursue that makes it worth.)

When my optician asked me to cross my knees and then struck my knee, I thought it was strange. Then he explained that in 40 years practice he had never come across Adie's system before. Or I might be dead. A couple of years later, I visited the Bradford Museum of Photography. In one exhibit there was a heat sensitive plate connected to a display panel. When one of my family put a hand on the plate, the display showed a multicoloured hand, very red around the rheumatic knuckles. The other children found their displays equally fascinating. When I put my hand on the panel, the display showed a random-ish light display - no structure at all. I asked the attendant why this should be. He confirmed the panel was working properly.
