Dhanashree Pandit Rai and Keka Sinha interpret the immortal thumri penned by Wajid Ali Shah at a program entitled "Transforming our Way of Living" held at the Tata Theatre N.C.P.A. on 22/11/2011
Keka explores the various levels at which this deeply philosophical thumri can be interpreted. Accompanying them are Niranjan Lele on harmonium and Kaushik Basu on tabla.

Wajid Ali Shah, the nawab of Avadh was banished by English after annexation of his state. The Nawab wrote this heart rending verse while being taken to Metiaburj near Kolkata alongwith his family and retainers. He compares himself with that of a bride who leaves for her in-laws house with no hope of returning back to her parental home.

This is not about father daughter as some have commented here although one sure can read it from that angle but it has far deeper emotion. It is about the longing for the time gone by or even dying. Just for the people who don't know the history here Wajid Ali Shah is lamenting about the fact that he was forced to abdicate his crown and his home. The "Naihar" is just a metaphor to express the pain of separation.
