The African Grey is hands down one of the most amazing companions you could ever have. While these videos look wonderful and amazing..and it seems that having one of these loveable birds as a 'pet' is fun. Please, unless you plan to love them like your children....don't consider having them as a pet. They are not ornaments...they are incredibly sentient beings and need an enormous amount of attention just as a 5 year old child. I only say this because rehoming of birds is a huge thing, and it is mostly because people think you can just get a bird, hand it some seed, and give attention on your time. Parrots like the African Grey are a true miracle of life. They truly deserve a great relationship with the one they bond with. I am so close to my buddy Isaac, my boy, I could never imagine being without him for more than a day. So please, don't take 'getting a parrot' lightly. Looks like the folks here in this video love their birds...and that is the way is has to be. I'm just here to make sure parrots are loved...so... much. Just my public service announcement. Watching this video makes me cry. When they are babies and babbling...they are just so adorable.

My girlfriend works and I’m financially not in need of working so I take care of the birds. Sometimes people say they are so smart and playful and intelligent like a 5 year old but they forget that they are 5 year old for 70 years or so, I hope as long as possible. Thanks for your comment it is terrible how many pets are just bought and then given so little attention, you really have to commit. You get all the love back ❤️

I want a baby African grey and one day I will get one my girl passed away from bird flu this past thanksgiving. I only had her 9months I saw her at a feed store without feathers she was for sale and something about her stole my heart. She was depressed because her previous owner was dying from cancer. I miss her like it was yesterday the thing is she passed away knowing true love from a human being. God bless you and all your babies ❤️

I’m so sorry for your loss, but like you said the bird died knowing love and that makes some difference. It’s not fair sometimes when one lives to 80 years and another dies so young. All you can do is give a very good healthy diet and make sure the room is as safe as possible when you let one out. I hope for you that you can get another one some day to love and play with. All the best🥲

At what week do you start introducing solid foods like pellets or veggies while still hand feeding them formula daily?
@Dexenco4 ай бұрын
It’s been a while so it’s hard to remember but I think for the African grey we just put some broccoli and soft but solid foods in a bowl in his cage and just some simple seeds, probably when he was able to stand straight up for longer than 5 seconds. Can’t hurt after a week or 8. Same for the cockatiel but maybe a bit sooner. Really hard to remember since it’s 13 years ago approximately. We asked the person who we got them from what’s best and did some research too. The vet was mostly trying to sell biological seeds that would cost like 200$ per kilo which was a bit too much. If you really want to know, since I’m not a professional I just have experience, try to ask a vet specialized in birds or look for some reliable literature on the internet. :)

@Dexenco Жыл бұрын
The potty training was just a coincidence. Also not all parrots will talk, despite seeing them talk on youtube you should keep in mind that the ones you see are being put on youtube right because they do something special. However, take something your bird loves as food, keep repeating a word, only give the food to him once heb says it and then give him huge attention too. Its a game of getting food and attention for them, so thats how you can train them almost anything :) Best of luck!

@Dexenco Жыл бұрын
Priceless. But if you happen to be very lucky keep in mind this is not a rabbit, you need customs approval, fill out CITES forms, have it chipped or ringed at birth, no guarantees of them ever talking etc. It will be around 600$ total, annualy when taking good proper care of them about 2500$. They need massive intelectual stimulation. massive amounts of different foods / pellets as a base. Foraging toys for food. We use 2 cages. A good cage is easxsily around 700$ as well. So keep all that in mind. And then I still say priceless. Money shouldnt be an issue in my book when it comes to this, if you doubt on having enoughn dont get one please, if youre just asking I hope I gave you a rough estimate of the costs. Vet visits are around 200$ when there is nothing wrong either, when there is something wrong you can easily end up facing a choice to put the bird down or just easily keep it alive but it will suddenly cost 2k. Whe one of our budgies broke his leg the first vet wanted to give him a lethal injection to end his suffering for 50$. We brought him to a clininc where he stayed a week and got him back healthy and he lived 6 years more. Could've bought 600 new budgies for that price though but it was so worth it to cry with him in my hands being back healthy and all. So please keep in mind these animals live very long compared to what people are used to and hence they cost more, dissease cant be avoided forever so eventually you will, well hopefully not but statistics stae otherwise, be paying an average of 2.5k a year. the 600$ purchase is literally nothing for an animal thatsb going to dance with you 60 years from now. I hope you know what it's all about. Please be kind, I have no reason to think you wont be so sorry for my agressive approach; its more meant to be an example for others reading this. I wish you all the best

What are you feeding him in that tube(syringe)?
@Dexenco7 ай бұрын
It was a special mix, I didn’t make it myself but we bought it from a big store that specializes in birds and they gave great advice, like to never apply pressure on a young parrots beak, a bit comparable to a baby’s head, it’s soft tissue and you can influence the beak a lot making it impossible for the parrot to eat later on and have many other problems. For everything we did we looked for a lot of advice and it helped that one year earlier we fed our cockatiel Mickey in the same way. She occasionally sneaked in to get a little of the weird substance they apparently really loved. Made the Parrot big and strong!

What do u feed ur budgies
@Dexenco Жыл бұрын
It’s not cheap at all, I’d see the combination we feed them costs about 400$ a month per bird so it is a bit like having another (rather spoiled) person in the house. I can’t give you brand names or that would link me to problems since I did not apply for a paid promotion. Should look into that in the future I think. Anyway they start of with some pellets. They have their foraging toys filled with a few treats. Then we spoil them with a treat when we train them (or try to) and lastly they get special small balls they love but i can’t name. All that combined with palm nuts which is basically their only food source in the wild. Then what I cán say is; lots of nuts, macadamia nuts, cashews, some peanuts and pistachios, had some walnuts (you see we give them very nutritious foods as a base mostly) and so on. They get blueberries raspberries kiwi fruits grapes, spinach cucumber broccoli. Lastly the most dangerous thing to give but probably the most healthiest are, beginning low on the ladder; citrus fruits (the sourness hurts so much if they kiss you and some hits an open wound or worse - your eyes, and then top of the ladder and their favorite are all sorts of peppers, not just bell peppers, the hottest ones on earth pretty much and they love them. We have to cut them using hand gloves and hang a sign on their door if they’ve had any and at what hour because if they eat a madame Jeanette and kiss you 1 minute later you will feel like your dying, let alone if it would hit your eyes so we take precautions, they love it though. That about sums it all up :) short question long detailed answer ;)

How did you get your baby bird and how much did you pay?
@Dexenco Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, or luckily, (and especially Grey’s since they’re endangered species) it is really hard. The money is not a factor someone can basically asks 1000’s or a few hundred - we paid 450 if I’m not mistaken. The local pet store owner at the time had someone come to him to help sell his hatchlings and this one had to go soon since his mother rejected him. If you are all read into them and know that this isn’t a pet with a price tag but it’s a lifetime companion, you can ask around pet stores if they know someone. Beware though that we deeply care about these little miracles so we don’t give them away, the money isn’t a factor to us we simply want to see a potential new owner to have a huge amount of dedication and passion for the birds. It’s almost like you will need to convince a jury in order to be allowed to buy one. To buy one as young as we did is nearly impossible because it’s illegal except for certain circumstances. Then you have quite some forms to fill out for customs, long bureaucratic process but when finally approved you now have a partner for, if taken care of properly and hopefully won’t get ill, about 60-80 years. Records of 100 and older exist as well but I haven’t read those articles so I can’t judge on that. 60-80 years old is about a human life span (given you buy them at around 18 years old) so to me that almost can’t be a coincidence and they are meant to be around us for our entire life. In the wild they’re lucky to pass 20-30 years.
