Baby Asian Water Monitor Setup | Basic Beginner Enclosure

We love our new baby water monitor and we wanted to share how to setup a basic beginner enclosure for a hatchling or baby. It must be minimal in order to promote socialization and adaptation to its new environment. I hope this video gives you some helpful info. Leave a comment if you have any questions or concerns.

I just got my baby Asian water monitor . And I wanted to ask if it’s normal if it doesn’t eat for 1 day? And if so about how many crickets should he eat per day?

If it doesn’t eat for a day every now and again, it’s fine. You don’t want it going more than a week. Depending on the size of your monitor, I would throw 15+ at a time. Also, vary the diet with Dubai roaches, cut up pinkie rats or mice and chicken and fish pieces dusted with a high quality calcium supplement.

I am so sorry. It didn’t add all my links. The enclosure and most items can be found at petsmart or petco. Some can found on Amazon. The tile I got at Home Depot.

Did that 150w do the trick? I watched a NERD video showing 100w and the tile isn’t getting to the 120 f temp. I have the exact exo terra, but my tile is light colored, perhaps causing the issue too? What ambient temp do you keep yours at too? Thanks! Great video!

Yes, the monitors need the 150 in order to get it hot enough. I keep mine around 80. Hotspot about 120.

You shouldn’t use a red heat light plus u should have a please where they can hide

The red heat light has since been changed, as well as the UV fixture. When acquiring new baby water monitor, they should NOT have a place to hide. Monitors will hide instead of socializing with you, as the owner. Our monitors have never had a hide in their enclosures and have all done very well.

Is a open top only cage ok?

It won’t hold the necessary humidity for these little guys. This is why we cover the screen top so the heat and humidity can’t escape.

Hi I am having trouble finding how much food I should give them a day

There is no set rule on how much to feed them. Babies need to eat daily. Feed a variety of foods, ground turkey, fish, chicken chunks dusted with calcium, pinkies or pieces of pinkies depending on size.

Not suppose to use ceramic bulbs in a dome.

I have always used them in porcelain clamp lamps and if you read the product description on their website, the recommendation from the manufacturer is to use in a porcelain clamp lamp. If using inside the enclosure, a wire cover guard should always be used with climbing reptiles to prevent burns.

I typically do enclosure videos for the species I own or adopt. I don’t currently have a mangrove or know someone who has one. Knowing a little about the species, the enclosure would be similar to a water monitor, being that they are arboreal and semi-aquatic as well. Just on a smaller scale.

This is terrible and the fact thats some kids think its awesome is the scary part. That set up is NOT ideal even for a hatchling for so many reasons.

What are some reasons you think this is not adequate for a hacthling? I’m curious. How many water monitors have you raised and what setup do you use? I am always willing to try new things that other people have had success with.
