i worked with a kind of tame one and it was the best animal ever. He was super active and kind of greedy for food. If he thought he´d get some he might snap at your hand but as soon as he realized it wont he was chilled. You could get him out of his room and run around and he´d follow you expecting something. Collegues trained immobilization for their trainee with him and he played along well. At some point he was sick of it and only thing he did was some hissing. Now hes got a bigger place in southern Spain. Miss this buddy.

You nailed it with your observation of their eyes. I raised an ornate Nile monitor from 21” to 72”, about 45 lbs, and 15 years old. Visitors claimed that he staring them down, and I would tell them, “no, he’s looking through your eyes into your soul to decide if you are acceptable in his domain or not. You’ll know quickly if you are not accepted. I’ve watched him run two of the burliest, biggest, toughest guys I know right out of the garage one time because he wanted the fried chicken they were eating. I was eating the same thing but he didn’t mess with me. Hmmmm. I yelled at them to drop their chicken but they wouldn’t so he just chased them around until they did. It was one of the funniest things I’ve ever watched!!! He was the ULTIMATE watch dog. People would step into the garage and hear that ominous hiss/deep breath of a monstrous dragon and they did t even have too see him to sense that foreboding. Most people thought he was an alligator. I once had the fire department visit with animal control not far behind because someone claimed there was an alligator in my yard. Ten minutes later the whole fire dept was posing with me and the dragon taking pictures and laughing and smiling and of course next were the neighborhood kids, and everyone had a great time. Then animal control dude rolls up, gets out of his truck, walks towards us and sees the dragon in my arms, noted that everything seemed to be under control, and got right back in his truck. The whole crowd laughed as he pulled away. Awesome. I’ve got stories like that all day long. I should write a book.

There was an Argus monitor on a construction site I worked on. There was a trench for gas pipes that was open awaiting the pipe, each day this massive Argus would drop into the trench and do his shopping, eating every other animal in there from giant burrowing cockroaches to skinks, elapid snakes and white's tree frogs. The tracks in the sand at the bottom of the trench showed every pursuit and capture. I eventually managed to catch that monitor one day, hauled him out of the trench and was attacked several times when I released him in the bush. By far the craziest monitor I have handled.

Just wanna say I appreciate your content, been watching for a long time and always love the info. Recently thinking of getting a monitor so I've been rewatching all your monitor vids, I'm a long time reptile owner from snakes, turtles, chameleons, geckos, beardies, uromastyx, I have plenty of experience with lots of variety Even still it truly seems a monitor could be a big challenge so lucky ima hold off for now but one day!

I have undiagnosed ASD (lots and lots of research on it, like, months of research) and my special interest is pretty much any animals, especially reptiles and amphibians, this channel is like the holy grail for me, I discovered it a couple days ago (this video is 3 years old lol) and I've been watching so much of it, the bat video just came out yesterday and I watched it, I absolutely loved it, I didn't even know birds were reptiles

We need a Dumeril's Monitor vs Argentine Tegu video ASAP. I love both and can't pick a favorite lol.
@bradsimpson87244 жыл бұрын
I know I'm late, but I do have some experience to share(I've owned both). It all depends on what kind of keeper you are. If you are a hands-on keeper and want something to interact with, the tegu is the better choice. If you're more like me, in that you prefer to sit and observe animals in a naturalistic enclosure, and handling isn't as important to you, I think you'll find the monitor more rewarding. The biggest thing to keep in mind with Dumeril's monitors is the diet is more specialized and tends to take a bit more work(at least around my area). But I would seriously ask yourself which kind of keeper you are, and if you want more of a pet, or more of a display piece.

@@bradsimpson8724 I know a few people with Dumeril's and they're laid back and fairly social. But they all bought theirs as hatchlings and they're well socialized.
@bradsimpson87244 жыл бұрын
@@curtism-w6b Absolutely, they can be super tame(mine was, and she was a long-term captive, but originally wild). However, their activity level is higher, and they seem more interested in getting away from you and doing their own thing. Tegus often develop an almost affectionate, cat-like personality, where they actually seem to want to hang out with you. Same with the display thing: tegus aren't boring by any stretch, but they aren't much for climbing or swimming, and seem to spend more lounging than the more active monitors.

Both of my savannah monitors I had were fantastic, I got them both very young, handled them ALOT, by the time they were adults, they were more like a dog than a lizard. I open their cage as soon as I got home from work, they would usually wander around the house till I sat down to watch TV then they would climb onto my lap and go to sleep, fantastic lizards.

Once when I was three, my brothers friend brought a baby monitor (I think a water monitor, not sure) and kept it in our basement in a glass aquarium. It was my dads first reptile. Shortly after my dad built a huge enclosure in the basement, then shortly after that he had to rehome it because he was scared that it would eat me!! 14 years later I got a leopard gecko and my dad loves geckos now :)
