Baby Australian Plovers

Australian Plovers or Masked Lapwings are common all over the east coast where they lay their eggs in long grass, often this includes places such as road sides, golf courses and parks. These little guys where hiding some long grass that was being slashed so we decided to give them a helping hand to safety

I’m a traffic controller and there is a baby plover and it’s parents in the street where I have been working. The parents won’t bring their baby too close to me but they don’t see me as a threat and will come to get worms within a few meters of me. I think they might think I am a plover because I have been hanging out in the street with them lol. I have seen them chase other birds away from their baby and also seen them attempt to chase cars away. They haven’t been ran over yet but everyone driving through seems to be careful not to hurt them which is really great to see. Plovers are great guard birds and will make their calls if people or other animals are hanging around. It’s been great that I have had the opportunity to observe them raising their little one because they are really quite intelligent birds.

We had a couple of masked lapwings lay 4 eggs on our flat metal roof, there were a couple of 26 degree days so I was thinking they were boiled and today one has hatched. I can’t believe it has survived against all odds. One more to hatch. Two eggs were rolled into the gutter so they may have died? I put a hand towel in the drain so any survivors did fall down. Cross fingers against the crow hanging around.

I love these birds! Though my partner hasn't had the best experiences with the parent during swooping season. So she doesn't like them very much 😂

Lol I am actually more scared of plovers than magpies. What I've noticed from plovers swooping is they never actually hit you though. But it's the loud ass noise they make. As soon as I hear it, I'm out of there haha

my fam and i rased a baby plover once he was just an egg at the time and the nest was abandonded and a crow was attacking it my mum saved the little guy amd we rased the little guy all the way to adult hood we named him peep peep and even when he was an adult hed still follow us around every day

How the heck did you get the babies and not get swooped, and then take them away and have time for a chat, all without being swooped? Tell us your ways please! I'd just like to never get swooped again when I'm out for a leisurely stroll!

I accidentally mowed a baby plover today (hence why I'm watching this and feeling like crap)😢... thankfully mum still has one baby left

No, they're not cool. You just pointed out the issue - they nest on curb sides and nature strips RIGHT NEXT TO pedestrian footpaths. The Australian Plover is the absolute epitome of the aussie scav. Uses you and then treats you like shit.
