The barn swallow fascinates me. The way they constructs their nests is nothing short of architectural genius. Thank you for filming your nest - I feel I can take a break from standing on dining room chair with makeup mirror held above nest to reflect what is going on below in the nest.

I have a nest of these now above my front door! Seems like theyve been there forever! I will say they are super fascinating! I've never seen both a mommy & daddy (assuming that is) both hang around! At night they both sit up there. There was 6 babies in the nest then but one fell out than flew away. Pretty sure hes returned a few days later bc now theres 3 hanging around, but still 5 in the nest. The only bad thing is there's a pile of bird poop right by front door that's like 3in

So... At least 2 eggs laid on May 29th, but they didn't hatch until June 20th? That's over 3 weeks! Even chicken eggs hatch by day 21, which as we know by the much larger and heavier eggs, baby chickens hatch not mostly bald like barn swallows but feathered, make plenty of loud noises, have their eyes open, and can already walk, run, eat & drink on their own. Everything I've read about barn swallows is that their eggs take 13 to 17 days to hatch. I wonder why yours took so long?
@byunghwara3 жыл бұрын
They don't hatch all at once. I think he waited till the 3rd one hatched and called it Day 1.

I found a swallow egg and it doesn't look like the eggs they had I know it's a swallow egg because the mom abandoned it and I like to observe them at times and I caught her in the act so before she got It out i scared her off and grabbed it and it's alive and healthy idk why she did that tho?

Hi...I have a nest by my back door. There were four eggs, two little ones fell out of the nest when they were about three weeks old and the remaining chicks started to fly at about four weeks, I love them so much. I’m worried one still comes back to the nest each night for the past week...the rest of the flock try to tempt him to come away with them but he stays until morning....the other birds make such a fuss to get him to fly...they are so beautiful and put on a big show night and morning...I do hope they will come back one day...thanks from Melbourne Australia....

@RefractArt4 жыл бұрын
They are insectivores, but if it happens for you to find a baby, feed him wet dog or cat food, i've succesfully raised about 5 of them with this food.

Im pretty sure these r the birds ive had for the last three years, i wouldn't mind except i can't water my flowers or even go near the porch theh swoop down on my head on the dogs back try to attack everyone, do yours do this?
@AnimeWhiteRose5 жыл бұрын
The barn swallows on my porch do the same. They will dive-bomb at you if you’re too close to the nest - but they won’t actually touch or hurt you! It’s quite funny.
@rob97264 жыл бұрын
It's important to remember that they would never actually hurt you, but I know how nerve-wracking it is! They know they could never hit you, because it'd do more damage to them than it would to you. The males especially have this bravado that fades off rather fast if you hang out with them. Fortunately, if you're in quarantine there's plenty of time to hang out near your barn swallow nest so that they get familiar with you! My swallow family doesn't swoop me unless I get right below the nest now! It's been a wonderful experience watching them raise young swallows :)
@berneemartin88593 жыл бұрын
Ours are gentle, I think they got used to me since I like to sit on my front porch drinking my morning tea. Often when we open our front door though it seems to startle them and they swoop away from the nest.
