This video honestly couldn’t have come at a better time. Finch, my 3 month old blue throated macaw came home about a month ago and he’s been on two hand feedings a day. It’s been hard to say the least. He’s the first baby I’ve hand fed and it’s been a bit of an emotional roller coaster. I was told if I wanted him flighted I would have to bring him home when I did because the breeder didn’t want to be liable if he were to fly into something and get injured in her store. She gave me psitticus pellets to give him and I had a two day crash course on hand feeding before bringing him home and I honestly can’t imagine how much worse the experience would be if I wasn’t given the hands in practice and learning to hand feed with someone who knew what they were talking about. I’ve heard not great things about the brand of pellet I was given and have wanted to switch him to the BirdTricks pellets, so knowing a download is already available to help me with switching him is a huge relief. I’m so grateful for all the insight in this video because we’ve been working on recall training and he’s not food motivated, but he is cuddle/attention motivated so it’s nice to hear that this is normal and okay. It’s also been nerve wracking watching his weight fluctuate as he’s been learning to fly, seeming to go up and down, some days him showing 5 grams less than the day before, but still gaining more than he’s losing most of the time. It’s overwhelming for sure, but I’ve found it well worth it so far.

This is awesome information. I was in a situation where the breeder got rid of his parrots. My farther came home and put a baby bird with barely feathers on my lap. I have googled went to the vets to teach me how etc. I managed. It was very difficult because this baby was not even taught how to hand feed. I had to teach him. With all of the challenges nothing went wrong. He grew up healthy, happy and naughty. His name is Liefie and he is a Indian ring-neck. The most beautiful grey, with the biggest personality and my heart. I wish I had you guys from the start but better late than never. Both my parrots grew up on pellets and we recently started the veggie diet and they absolutely love it. Weight is stable and they are going strong. Thank you for the video, much appreciated.

This makes me so sad. We got a macaw from a pet store, where the breeder dropped her off at 3 months old. Forced weaned. The bird store clipped her wings extremely short. We adopted her at 5 months old. Feedings has been a struggle for us. Its definitely been a hard learning curve for us. We did a TON of research before getting a macaw. But, we weren't prepared for this. We didn't initially know the background and by the time we did, we couldn't give her back (we knew it would probably kill her if we did give her back). This video is so good.

Why would you want to give her back, that i misunderstood. Maybe cuz you had to learn with no help how to feed, best of luck, you can do it!!♥️♥️i hope they let the bird fly before the clipped her, sounds like that going good since your working on recall. Thewe pet stores, it's a shame.

@@carolhartley4448 They definitely did not, based on what else was said. Most breeders clip wings as soon as the feathers are out of the follicle, which is why you need to do research and ask a lot of questions. Everybody else is a BACKYARD or MILL breeder. Just like with dogs.

From what I see on social media, with a world wide audience, there’s a lot of irresponsible breeders that boot the birds from home without properly weaning. I see requests of how to feed babies, how to wean babies by people that clearly were rushed by the breeder. I am clearly very ambivalent about breeders in general especially when they don’t have follow up assistance for their customers. Thank you for reinforcing the fact that we should only buy babies from responsible breeders that properly care for their birds/customers. And opening our eyes to force weaning and back sliding. I fell in love with my “baby bird” at her age of 24 years, so I have no experience with raising a baby. They are super cute and just like puppies and kittens, you can see why people take them home. Please people do your homework before you bring any animal home. And don’t bring a bird home, baby or not until you’ve done your home work AND volunteered for months at a bird sanctuary/rescue to understand what you are committing to.

I fully agree but I'd even go further and say that breeders should not sell birds before they are fully independent and properly socialized. Also: I have a hand fed conure and four others that were raised by their parents. And there is a difference: I must say the hand fed conure has developed some dysfunctional behavior (e.g. aggressive behavior); the other ones are just fine and do not act up like the hand fed one. All of them are tame, some more than others - it is just a matter of patience and training. Therefore I'd even avoid buying hand fed, tame birds and only go for the naturally raised ones and work on taming them myself.
@sheinz6119

@Ruzahel If you want to volunteer at a rescue or sanctuary, just google, “parrot rescues near me” or “parrot sanctuary near me”. Not all of us have facilities near us, in that case find one that you have confidence in online and ask if there is anything you can contribute online, social media management, writing, recruiting, photo posting, editing of photos, building websites, recruiting donations from sponsors/manufacturers/donations, creation of thank you items from contributors/donors, thank you notes to donors, making toys for birds, cutting paper to fit cages, cash donations, etc. Or maybe schedule a “vacation” to help a rescue or sanctuary for 4-6 hours a day for a week or two. Spend the rest of your “vacation” hours enjoying local interest, relaxing, whatever you like. There are an incredible number of ways to contribute. In person is definitely best but be creative.

@Birdsinsight That is some very important information to understand. My CAG, was hand raised by someone that didn’t have a lot of experience. I didn’t come into her life until she was 24 yrs old. She had been cagebound for several years and not fed properly for years. She is not cuddly at all, failed to fledge properly among other things. Being a first time parrot companion, I was inexperienced also. I tried to improve her life as soon as I learned best practices. Converted her to organic pellets, fruit, veg. We have worked through a lot of go and no go situations. She learned to kiss me, and best of all, if she bites me, it’s not as hard, and she knows she has to kiss it and make it better. I, in turn, have learned to not push her too much, no blood letting in years. She is pretty tolerant and easy going at a party or in a noisy situation. She even laid an egg on me one time. She hasn’t laid for about 7 years. She is the love of my life.

@@sheinz6119 I get it... And your bird was lucky to have you find her. My hand fed peach-fronted conure also has his good times; he can be very sweet. I think it is a good thing to check first at the local animal shelter; there are plenty of birds there that had need a good home.

Another great video!!! I wish this video was around when I bought my severe macaw almost 7 years ago. I was thankfully weighing her empty every morning. She was acting like a hungry baby bird and was loosing weight. Took her to a vet and she was starving to death as she wasn't fully weaned as she should have been from the breeder. The breeder sent her to me when she was 2 months old and told me she was fully weaned onto a terrible seed diet. So I got a crash course in hand feeding. The positive of having to hand feed her was I was able to wean her onto Harrison's pellets and I am now slowly getting her onto BirdTricks pellets.

Got my baby sun from someone amazing. I had already been researching to be ready. She said he may regress and gave me formula and egg and biscuit mix and he did at first. She also keeps in constant contact will answer any questions. I weigh him twice a day made him fresh chop with him involved and discovered he likes it warmed, I mix it with a sweet potato mash I saw in one of your vids or a bit of cooked rice so it’s not straight cold. I then offer him formula and he might have a bit. He also always has an organic pellet in his cage he can access all day. Late afternoon I offer him another feed and bits of fruit and nuts throughout the day to try different things & train which I didn’t plan on doing at all yet but he showed an interest. We do touch and recall mostly because he really enjoys it. He’s 4 months yesterday.

The youngest bird I've ever gotten was a 2-month-old lovebird. He came from a reputable breeder, but I got him 2 weeks after he was in his first home. The people who bought him felt that a baby was too much work, and they didn't have experience with small birds at all. He was weaned, but JUST, and he was being fed the wrong size of pellets so he wasn't eating. I ended up hand-feeding him a mix of warm food at palettes so that he could get used to the proper size and see them as food. He's a super healthy 9 months old now who would eat all day if he could. As soon as he got used to the proper sized food he was great.

@@tokamohamed4078 Try again! I have met parentraised birds as wel as nest-robbed ones (even wildcaught ones), and invariably the nestrobbed ones (growing up without parrot-parents) have HUGE issues. Selfharm, featherdestructive behaviours, screaming, not being able to deal with new situations well --there are so may scientific studies done about this, there is no longer any excuses to put an intelligent species through that kind of deprivation and trauma. (Except profit, for the humans of course). Bitrdtricks are hugely influnetial so they should be advocates to stop this, not promote more suffering "saving one parrot at the time while condemning flocks of others" is not a great salespitch! Pubescent birds are ones that get ditched the most, when they stop being biddable good-baby-birds and start acting out.)

Wow. I think my conure was this close to starving now. We got her at 3 months from a pet store and they had her on an all seed diet, but she only ate the sunflowers. That first day I was determined to find something healthier than sunflowers that she was willing to eat. She refused my chop mix and pellets, so I made birdie bread. I guess that was soft enough for her tastes and she ate that in the same bowl I kept chop for a few weeks before transitioning to a more 75% chop, 25% bread like now. She's gaining weight now and Im glad to say after having our other conure for 6 months longer than her, his feathers are starting to get an almost sparkling sheen of health, so I'm somewhat confident that our ratios are healthy (despite the bread). I need to buy more pellets when I have money though. They both love them now, I'm very pleased to say

Oooh thanks that was very educational..I have a baby galah and never reared a baby bird before..Daisy was 3 weeks old when I got her and the breeder just showed me how to do it and that was it ..she is now 9 months old and doing so well but I did take her to the vet and she told me that she is on wrong diet ..no sunflower seeds only as treats and she should be on pallets and small amount of seeds I think Daisy is teaching me she shows me what she wants to eat that’s slowly start eating the pallets and budgie seeds and now she has just started to tell me when it’s time to go to bed around 5:30 pm when it starts to get dark..I just love my bird and I have learned so much from the birdtrix thank you and also I am amazed how many Australian birds you have over there birds that are reare even here in Australia..

Me too. I have had birds in the past and then developed a severe allergy to their dander so when my last one died from cancer I never got another one. I live vicariously through these videos. I love birds so much!!

@@tiffanythompson6178 I'm so sorry for your loss. If you'd still like to have a companion parrot, there might be a way. You probably already know this, but some bird species produce oil instead of dander. For example, lovebirds and eclectus parrots. There's a chance a little birdie could be a part of your life again

I wish I'd had BirdTricks when I got my second bird! I was 11 years old. My other bird had passed away due to an accident and I wanted a Quaker which was the same breed. I had to go on a waiting list before my bird finally hatched. I do love that she let me come and handle the bird, but I think he got weaned too fast, it was like almost three weeks faster then they'd said it would be. He acted like he didn't really know what to do with the seeds I gave him, and when I gave him something like a piece of apple in my hand he'd do that baby bird move where he'd bob his head and tip his face up like he was waiting for me to poor the food in. Of course I was a kid, and the one book I had on birds said to feed them seeds, clip their wings, and train them to be quite by covering the cage (all of which I did, thinking I was being a good bird mama) Fast forward 15years, I moved out of my parents house and got another bird so GreenBean wouldn't be all alone while I was at work. That breeder had birds already ready to go. She brought the whole batch to me so I could pick one out. They were all very healthy looking, glossy feathered with good skin and their beaks and feet looked smooth and healthy. My bird had NOT looked like this when I got him, but I'd thought it was because he was young. Peanut was already weaned and dug into his food like a pig (though the lady said if he seamed to be having trouble to bring him back and she'd keep him a little longer) She also offered to exchange him when he was sexually matured if he became aggressive (she told me that was something that happened sometimes with Canures) He's never had his wings clipped, and he flies around the house confidently and competently, though he did have trouble balancing on perches at first-sometimes he would just slide right off my knee. Poor GreenBean rarely ever flies, though he's had his flight feathers for years ever since I realized it was a bad thing to clip them . And when he does fly it's only when he's really scared. Then he crashes into things and falls behind furniture, one day he flew into a window so hard he passed out! The vet said he was ok, but it scared me and him. I taught Peanut to avoid flying into windows-he just lands on the frames and taps his beak against them. Overall I think there's a lot of better information out there now, and I wish GreenBeans' early years could've been done differently

Thank you so much for everything that you do. We just added a baby blue and gold to our flock which includes an African grey, an illiger macaw (mini macaw) and a Quaker parrot. And we got him partially weaned meaning he still takes two 30 ccs of formula but he also eats our morning chop, and is dabbling with dried pellets throughout the day. He’s really taken to fruits and veg especially our egg white veg chop.

I had a parakeet who had a clutch of five. She starting plucking their feathers as they came in. I tried everything I could find and then everything the vet recommended and she still wouldn’t stop so I separated them and took over their feeding. They turned out to be great birds but it wasn’t a walk in the park that’s for sure. I’m happy to say they all survived.

For weighing, I use a small dumbbell weight (I think I use a 2 pound one) and put it on the scale and zero it out. Good width for many species, no chance of it toppling, and removable so you can use the scale for other things!
