Every wonder what it's like to care for chickens for an entire day? We have documented a full day of backyard chicken care in our mobile coop from morning until birdie bedtime.
Watch us as we let the chickens out in the morning, clean their mobile coop, give them chicken treats, play with them, and tuck them in at night. Our chickens are not short on personalty and love to "ham it up" for the camera!
How long does it take to care for chickens each day?
1) Letting them out in the morning - less than 5 minutes
2) Cleaning out the coop - less than 10 minutes
3) Giving treats - less than 5 minutes
4) Putting chickens to bed - less than 5 minutes
5) Loving on chickens - up to you!
UPDATE: We now use the electric fence at night due to some foxy visitors on our property

That’s the kicker on eating chicken... My Aunt had to keep the coop clean as a child and as a adult refused to even cook chicken, always said they were “Filthy”. I am sure it’s better now, but too late to ask questions now. She passed. Also wish could ask questions to my grandmother who was raised on farm.

I could do this. I could TOTALLY do this. Everything I've been reading and watching previously makes it look so hard and fraught with illness and tedious tediousness. I could totally do this. Thank you, Jaime. And hey... I've canned 100 lbs of meats and stews, and 10 lbs of potatoes in the last 2 weeks in the 921 I've had for a year now, thanks to you. Just some more by-products of the "I could totally do this" moments inspired by Jaime.

I’m watching this because my neighbors two chicken have discovered they can get into my yard. Never have had any experience with chickens, they are so cool! I totally enjoy them coming to visit and they spend all day in my yard. They go home at night and show up at about 6 AM each morning. The poop is the only downside.

Thank you for that. I've been wanting chickens for a few years in my tiny urban backyard but am allergic so was worried I'd not be able to handle them as much as they need. But seeing your routine makes me feel like I might could do it. They don't seem to need a lot of holding, although I wish I could hold them. Also, I'm watching this during the Coronavirus shelter-in-place and have been a little fearful and stressed lately worried about the economy crashing and all the people who are sick or worried. I'm not afraid for myself because as a prepper, I'm prepared. But my heart aches for all those who are more vulnerable. This video was just what I needed to lift my spirits. The sweetness and calmness of it was peaceful and welcome. Thank you, Jaime.

I love fooling with my four red leg horns. There’s something therapeutic about it. They are so funny. I use hemp in my coop. No odor, very little dust. I use a cat litter scoop from Walmart to pick up the poop each morning. Even that’s fun to me. I’m an old farm boy so it’s a little like going back to a time that was so much simpler. Thank you so much for sharing!!

Way different than what my chicken routine is. My chicks are put into areas throughout the day right now so I can move them around where I need them, but of course, I have to keep an eye on them so I usually do this in the evenings when I can sit outside and just watch them for a bit. I do like your solar-powered electric fence. Solar is definitely the way to go. Another gr8 video.

I love the name Mushroom for your bird. I will probably steal the name next Spring when I get my chic's. Also Diatomaceous Earth won't keep out bugs but it will kill them after contact. I suggest getting food grade Diatomaceous earth as the birds will eat some of it when they feed on the bugs.

I am absolutely loving your extremely informative docuseries’ on the setting up, choosing and caring for your chickens. You go into all the detail that is really needed instead of just glossing over it. So very valuable as I am continuing my research in preparation for my next lot of chickens at my new property. Taking my time to do it properly this time and I want to build or have my nephew builder construct my coop with the plans I draw up once I have settled on the best style. That is the advice I am seeking from your videos too. The most user friendly/chook safe/friendly coop. Keep up the awesome videos. Ciao bella.

Just found your channel. Well, I've seen a few links to it from other homestead channels. I'm still new to homesteading. Really like the two door system that you have. I just have the one door (chicken door is one the far side) makes it difficult to clean the coop door side. Two doors makes the job easy.

I don't know if chickens are too big to be effected by it but it's something worth considering. Hamster owners specifically avoid pine shavings because their strong scent causes respiratory problems. They usually recommend ceder shavings instead. Food for thought.

Chicks are like puppy's and kittens, very cute and needy. As chicks get older they slowly turn into velociraptors so don't turn you back on them ;-)....But seriously, we thought Buffs were a 'nice' breed... but the ISA Browns are amazingly docile and they will follow you around so closely, they will literally get under foot. They are great layers, an egg a day (currently adding two hours of p.m. light in the coop), but only medium size brown eggs.
