My mistakes cost me my livestock - goats, chickens, ducks, and geese. Find out all the mistakes I made in getting livestock on our urban homestead and what I would do differently.
*All of our livestock have been re-homed with our friends who have an amazing farm where we know they will live out better lives than one we can give them right now.
Thanks for watching!

Try being a farmer that's third generation on same ground for 112 years. New neighbors are always advised to what goes on everyday of the year but they complain. I tell THEM TO MOVE if they don't like it. And l tell them stop complaining, a farmer made it possible for you to live. Cidiots are everywhere. Good luck in future. You deserve a great life. I can tell you are a smart and decent person. Farmer John.

My sentiments exactly. You don't like animals, you shouldn't have moved here! We've been having animals for 3 generations on this land, and I don't care what regulations change, I intend for this to continue into the 4th! No idea if my kids will want to continue this, but I can't control that.

Where we lived in AZ everyone had horses. People started moving into that area and didn’t like the smell so they started to push to rezone the area. These people chose to move into this area fully aware of the horses. They ruined it for the people that have been living in the area for many many years. Most of the complainers came from California.

I know this was awhile ago, and you’ve moved on, but this breaks my heart. I’m tired of the society that wants total quiet and grass. We’ve chosen to try to live more sustainably. We have 6 chickens. Others aren’t into that, which is fine. But stop trying to make others lives hard because you hear a goat. I hear dogs barking all night in my neighborhood, and no repercussions for it. Yet if a goat makes noise it’s devaluating property?! Give me a break...

There were also distant gunshots right after the car horn too. But no animals! That would be too noisy. I can understand a little bit within reason, but talking with your neighbors and working things out, especially if you're the new neighbor, is the better approach. Or, you know, not moving into a neighborhood like that, which as any good property hunter should do, is good research on the area before they purchase property.

people decide to build in areas where people have goats , horses , chickens... then complain that their neighbors have goats, horses, and chickens. something similar happened to a couple who were going to raise horses.. new neighbors built adjacent to their property then did as yours did and dug up some ancient record that prohibited it. Unlike your situation , the family who planned on raising horses, bought the property with that intention and invested everything into doing so. In their case , they fought back... did they get their horses? No , they did not , they did however discover there was literally nothing to prohibit them from establishing a hog farm. So the neighbors ended up with a hog farm, which you could smell for miles before you ever arrived to it. The family that owned it, couldn't even tolerate it , and moved into a house up wind of the farm. The neighbors... got stuck they couldn't move because the no one would buy their property.

These same people who hate useful animals such as livestock will happily allow the whole neighborhood to suffer their worthless yapping dogs to bark and howl for several hours day and night. I totally get it that people want peace and quiet. It's incredibly frustrating when your neighbors and their animals make so much noise pollution, and you can't do anything about it. People just need to be considerate of how their actions effect others. Still, it baffles me how quickly the authorities move to punish you for loud livestock, but they do absolutely nothing for nuisance dogs.

It's very humble & tremendously mature of you to accept the blame for the situation you found yourselves in, even though it sounds like you did the best you could've done at the time. You're right about the level of noise an unhappy goat can make! I must agree that no one could blame your neighbors for being displeased by that. You seem like a wonderful person and I think that it's a shame that your neighbors were not forthcoming with discussions about a compromise. It's likely that you might've been able to work things out and live in harmony with them if they had been a little more open minded. You had a lot to offer that might have been beneficial to everyone. You're obviously very intelligent, interesting and cooperative people. It's unfortunate that they did not value those things adequately. In light of the damage we've done to our environment and to our own health in general, it seems to me that everyone should see the necessity & the urgency of leading a more organic and sustainable lifestyle. I applaud your vigilance & determination toward that end! I'm sure you will find a property where you can pursue your homestead goals peacefully and enjoy the fruits of your labors.

I totally understand your desire to move closer to like-minded people to carry out your homesteading lifestyle (I would've made the same choice you did), but it also deeply saddens me that we live in a society where growing and raising food is 'unsightly'. I think part of the solution is for those folks to be exposed to families like yours, who can intelligently and passionately explain the value (politically, nutritionally, ethically) in having a hand in feeding yourselves. Society is trending towards further homogenization of neighbourhoods where beliefs in the 'right' way to live become more deeply entrenched. I wonder what it will take to shake up our cultural fear/distrust/disdain of the 'other'? Thanks so much for sharing your story.

You can opt out of the agreement, there's a legal process you can follow it's same one I used to get out of a hoa, file for a perfect deed, it will be a lengthy process but a perfect deed means you hold superior right and it also removes any contract, convent or hoa authority, basically you're challenging th contract by saying no I don't agree with the terms they're intrusive and damaging your way of life, the challenge can also include I wasn't properly served notice of that contract, it's legit and legal process It's called a perfected title for the non legal persons.

Thank you for your honest and authentic sharing of your situation. You are helping so many people to avoid a similar issue and you did it with stoic class and without demonizing others. BRAVO! That is a great accomplishment in the middle of being disappointed over your situation. Where I live in New Jersey there used to be twelve small farms in our area and most have fallen to Mc Mansion fever or Townhouse blight. The remaining small generational family farms are having the same issues such as ; people now complaining about living down wind of a very small cow pasture, and how your Llamas scare my dog. And my personal favorite " I know your family has been on your farm for 150 years BUT, nobody informed us that a pig farm was nearby when we bought our townhouse. So what are you going to do about the smell and noise, OR ELSE" ... Everyone in these gated communities are used to having an Association to complain to or that controls their world. These new comers are sold a story by the developers of living a farm life without living on a farm. However they seem to leave out that one should understand, appreciate and enjoy farm living before moving in and harassing their farming neighbors with their undereducated expectations . I hope your new situation is so much better and that you can find a way to remove your fencing and reuse at least some of it at your new location. I understand that you did not originally intend to homestead at this location and that your are holding yourself accountable. Again BRAVO! However, it obviously was not an issue 10 years ago covenent or not. You heard your neighbors concerns and addressed them, that makes you a good neighbor not bad homesteaders. I am sorry to hear of yet another responsible small farm having to deal with non-farming neighbors when they were there first. Good Luck and stay strong in your perfect location.

I know you are hurt and disappointed now and you have every right to be but the first thing I thought of when you told your story in having to get rid of your animals was this. Remember that God is in control and I saw it as forcing you to move to another home so you can homestead like you wanted to all along. It pushes you into moving forward, when before you were making excuses for not moving. They may have been strong and honest reasons for staying put but now you are finding it possible.. Just think about that and realize this may have been a diamond in disquise for you. I wish you the best and feel very confidant you will succeed in your journey in homesteading... You have learned many lessons in this experience so please I see it as a blessing this has happened and I hope you do also.

Unfortunately these type of people aren't restricting themselves to the urban environment. First come first serve, you should have all the rights i your own property, people and humans who hate nature and animal life move to where you live just to cause hell, those people should off stayed in the city were they belong, developers running wild and destroing the farms the ranches, basically all outdoors, and no one can stop, them. Most of them get away with it because they call for the good of all they only they benefits and the politicians who approve their misconduct, there is enough land near the city were we can build homes, or smaller cities and communities were other homes can be built, it's really stupid and ignorant to destroy nature and move where people are living a quiet life! Enough said!

So sad for you, I’m in a quiet neighborhood where everyone knew and respected each other. Older folks moved out and younger couples with lots of cash bought in to the neighborhood. Most of them keep to themselves and like it that way. When I started chicken keeping I called city hall and was told there were no restrictions on keeping chickens as long as there were no complaints from neighbors. I don’t have a rooster but now I get a little nervous when one of my girls gets a little enthusiastic with her egg song😝 I love my house but really want to move to a more like minded area.

My dear, it wasn't so much a mistake as it was a learning experience. You did everything that everyone advises to do, you just missed one obscure thing. It is a lesson you have learned and will be wiser because of it. And, since you put it on YT, hopefully will help others to learn as well. I know of 2 other YT homesteaders who have had similar experiences but from slightly different directions. Since you are in a community where they are building those big, fancy, and pricey homes, let's hope you will get top dollar for your property so you can move to a MUCH better location. :)

Part of the problem are the suburbanites and city people. Often they are selfish and narcissistic. I only know this because I've seen my county transform People build near a hog farm and want the hog farm to move. They move next to a racetrack and want the track to end their life long business because its 'noisy' I see these things over and over. It's all about them, to hell with the families already living there. Your situation is a little different and I think we all learned a great deal from your situation. It made me re-read my deed and check my area to see if my acre is actually plotted as part of a neighborhood. Bless you and your husband, you are in my prayers.

If people are building half million dollar homes next door rejoice. Sell your place make a big profit, go somewhere and buy 20 acres and do whatever you want. Give your neighbor a dozen eggs on the last trip out, tell him because of him you made a killing and thank him for being a prick.

We have the same problems here in New Zealand, Townies moving into the country and developers moving in and changing the local landscape and demographics. I had a guy telling me about the problems he was having with his new neighbour. 1st she thought his chickens were cute so encouraged them on to her property by feeding them, next thing she is complaining because they were pooping on her patio. Next she was complaining about the fact he ran a lawn mowing business and she didn’t like the smell of his composting. His solution was to move his composting bins to the boundary fence. She not only got the full on smell of the compost, but the flys too. She sold up and moved back to the city.

Wow, misery loves company. This made me so sad; I admire your positive attitude and tolerance for people that do these types of things. I have neighbors similar to yours...complained about my fiance doing his live workouts for his community during Covid lockdown, to help people stay active and avoid the depression from creeping in. The workouts were M-F at 9am every morning in our...BACKYARD. He called the HOA on us and I called the police when I saw a man stalking my house, taking photos of our house. Turned out it was a guy from the HOA. We ended up typing up and dropping off a nice letter to all of the surrounding neighbors...and wouldn't you know, NONE of the other people noticed it and thought it was great what he was doing. The man that reported us has people coming at all hours of the night, questionable behavior, yet we have never bothered to report it because it doesn't really impact us. Funny how the miserable people cannot do the same.

It’s heartbreaking that neighbors cannot get along. I bought 12 acres 25 years ago full of trees and life. I came here to raise my daughters and give them a better life. But the local people feel that only there family belongs here. My house is 50 feet from a no tail chemical farmer. Over the years I have had to watch my forest of trees get destroyed as there’s no protection for me my animals or my land. Years of wasted time trying to grow food to feed people. As my neighbor destroys everything in his path to raise poisonous grain that countries do not want. I’m looking for a new farm and hope to find like-minded people in the area. People that are concerned about the quality of food. I am truly shocked at the hate and nastiness of my neighbors just because I want to grow quality food. Running over my flag pole that flies the American flag. Peeling out in my yard chasing their cattle tearing up my grass. Absolutely no respect for anything. The saddest part of it all they all sit in church every Sunday but never read their Bible on how to grow food. We are to be free as people we should be able to respect each other‘s wishes. Evidently your neighbors never heard of the singing goat :-) I’d rather have that than a giant John Deere sprayer wiping out everything in existence or the spray plane divebombing the house.

Wow - I cannot say enough good things about this video! First of all, it is so refreshing (and I think just so badly needed in today's world) is that this Speaker is so open-minded and thoroughly insightful into another person's side of things. She is also articulate and honest. And all the information is pure gold for anyone thinking of starting a homesteading endeavor. AND YES! good luck to you in your future endeavors.

heartbreaking. I dont know how you managed to hold it together towards the end of the video. I can see you struggling as you talk about getting rid of the animals, and even thought you do not appear to be angry or harbor ill will against your neighbors, I can see the hurt. And knowing you were there for years before they built and moved into your area, it saddens me to realize that such a thing can happen. I am going to continue following you and hope for a happier journey for you and your family!

So the moral of the story is when you buy the property you want buy the property around it too. That way people can't move in after you are already there and get you kicked off your land or force you to get rid of your stuff because they don't like how you live. Got it.

It blows my mind how ignorant people can be about homesteading. Our planet is dying. Let’s have a nice toxic manicured Green lawn instead of a chicken coop. Let’s build a nice toxic row of roses instead of corn. Looking into the future, probably in 50 years, if u want fresh veggies your going to have to grow it your self. You want a nice steak dinner good luck, no more cows. Just sayin

I'm seeing this video a few weeks later, but it sounds like you may have a claim against the Title Agency you closed with when you purchased. If they issued a policy ensuring your ability to own and utilize that property & they didn't find and disclose that covenant that's now being used against you, they owe you. (I worked for a Title Agency for several years) Of course, the neighborhood has changed & it sounds like you'll be better suited now somewhere else where you can flourish. But, you still might want to check into making a claim. Some food for thought.
