Also it's not remotely like a rat (though rats are cool), chimps are a keystone species in their habitat and we need to presevse that for our own survival, it's also more interesting than most human rubbish. This one also was killed by a male and not the surrogate mother, that's the sort of thing chimps and also humans do as we are more or less the same as them.

@Voracious Reader I just read the article you suggested... seems as though they have had problems before within the troop of chimps there. After all I have read and seen in docs even I would not have left the young one alone with a male, and where was the surrogate mother? She was apparently left with another female and the one male, without the mom...if I am reading that right. Seems like a tragedy waiting to happen, to me. They are complicated and their heirarchy is changeable as younger males vie for leadership. Because they (the younger males) are in a confined space and not free to leave the troop if there is trouble deaths are not really surprising. Such a shame...I hope they learned from this. I don't understand why they didn't try to reunite the baby with her real mother at some point. That sometimes works, but they didn't say in the article.

It’s sad, but chimps do this naturally. After all, they are related to us and our species has been killing babies by war crimes for many thousands of years

I don’t know why they said that. Her mom actually rejected her-she knew fully well how to care for a chimp as all mom’s do in nature. If mom’s had to be taught how to care for infants, there would be no life.

@@ashlynmarie9562 Chimps learn from other chimps as time goes on, in the wild from their own mother and other relatives. In zoos generally they don’t want the chimps breeding but birth control and/vasectomies can fail. If you’ve seen videos of female chimps without the knowledge (due to lack of other chimp mothers with babies for example) drag infants around by an arm or climb while holding only the leg of the baby, then not nurse him or her regularly, or at all, or just plain ignore the infant, that’s why the decision has to be made to remove the infant. Also chimp society is very often violent, youngsters getting killed is not unknown, in captivity and the wild.

I hate to be a stickler because you guys do a good job but this baby needs to be on a warm body not a towel, not a stuffy, not a warm water bottle, an actual person that is moving around. When you make the decision to raise a wild animal you must do everything possible for it to be as close to natural as possible. By leaving the baby alone in a crib for hours at a time you are not succeeding and are allowing the very thing you are trying to prevent to happen. Keep the baby on you 24 HOURS A DAY EVERYDAY!

Zoo's don't "sell" to each other. They loan out individuals depending on genetis and temperment. All loans are temporary. For the apes they keep a roster/book on each individual, sire and dam, genetic line, etc. Look up the GAIN book for great apes.
