Love how you can see Vegeta's development through his relationship with his children. With Future Trunks he's distant and abusive. Only at the very end of the arc does he show that he cares. With Present Trunks he's much better. He hugs him, promises to go to the park with him (which he actually does in Super) but there's still some distance between them (after hugging him he beats him unconcious lol) With Bra he wants to be there when she's born, he shaves his moustache to impress her, and beats up some creeps trying to hit on her.

I love GT Vegeta. Not only is he hilarious, he's exactly where a post-Z Vegeta /would/ be at after going through his growth at the end of the Buu stuff. He still has an ego and a weird-space-warrior-dude mindset, but they actually followed through on him setting aside the Goku-shaped chip on his shoulder. Unlike in Super, where I dunno I guess it's just easier to write "argh rargh I will surprass Kakarot" forever and ever.

Gotta agree, GT Vegeta is by far best Vegeta... well actuality Namek Vegeta is best Vegeta, when he was both remorselessly evil and cunningly pragmatic, when he was only ever an ally of reluctant necessity. GT Vegeta is a damn close second though and the first time he actually felt genuinely reformed. It could be argued that his upcoming possession by Baby just makes this all a retread of Majin Vegeta, but it's the contrast in both the setup and execution that makes the GT version work so much better.

The reason the writing doesn't work is because the writers forgot about continuity. Actions should follow what has come before. Actions that take place now should have consequences. Chi-Chi slapping Goten over being impolite makes sense but it doesn't follow the idea of everyone being here because they're concerned Goten got injured. I'll bet the writer thought "Goten arrived home and family was there" first and not "Family is there because Goten was injured" until later. While it's easy to argue this is a consequence of poor planning, I agree with your assertion. This is a result of the writers trying to meet a deadline and prioritizing the important events while thinking about how to connect them later.

Inconsistent writing from different episode production crews can always lead to plot inconsistencies when telling a continuous story, no matter the production, but especially with Dragon Ball. GT and Super both have the problem, and both had some interesting ideas when it came to what they wanted to tell.

Super could be so bad at keeping a consistent narrative thread, especially toward the end of TOP. Frieza takes a savage beating before being knocked aside, seemingly out cold but not out of the ring. The expectation is that should be setup for a dramatic return later, but no, he actually returns rather casually only to be pushed off screen again to setup for the actual dramatic reveal. Or there is Vegeta, who after going all out defeating Toppo with an attack that was explicitly said to drain all his ki leaving him seemingly helpless at the end of one episode, but then at the start of the next he just powers back up into his fancy new blue evolution form and trades punches with Jiren like it was no big deal, and it's only after all that his attacks start to slowly lose effectiveness and he's eventually eliminated. There are times when it just fell like you could skip half the episodes, and not only would the story be better pased, it would make more sense.

While the whole Chichi slapping Goten has unfortunate implications if you think about it, i found it funny because of how out of nowhere it comes.But hey at the least Gohan gets sometime in the future a hairstyle that he doesn't share with Yamcha! Fun fact we see here that Baby Gohan evaporates Piccolo(and Goten who Piccolo holds) yet next episode Goten is okay and Piccolo isn't talked about like he never existed till we learn later that he did survive Baby's attack but is injured(despite the fact he can regenerate) and it turns out Piccolo didn't even bother to warn Goku or anybody else!

The whole scene seems to have been inserted purely for the shock value Gohan "betraying" his beloved childhood mentor. It's arguably the most out of character thing Gohan could possibly do, and in that respect is actually very effective at establishing what kind of monster Baby is. The biggest problem is that it goes a bit too hard and later episodes just ignore the consequences.

i always saw the new rule for baby's possession as he learning for possessing Trunks. He lost control of Trunks when he truned super saiyan, so baby decided to possess saiyans when theyre already transformed. of course this didnt last when Trunks returned to earth, but at the time it made some sense.

Watching this along with Super, It’s very clear that the writing is less consistent due to there being multiple writers with deadlines and not having a manga to work off of like they have when making OG Dragon Ball and Z. Not saying that Dragon Ball was always consistent or sometimes make mistakes but at least it felt more consistent since it was all written by the same author from the beginning to the end of the Majin Boo arc. To me, this shows how writing can falter when there isn’t someone in charge to properly watch over to make corrections and prevent any inconsistencies, especially for a long-running series that is very serialized. But I can’t really blame them too much since I can understand the predicament they were in writing a series without the main author and having to work on a weekly deadline so these things do happen. But I do enjoy watching these I can’t wait to see more of these DBD videos!

Okay you didn’t talk about the gag where Baby considers Chichi to be an actual threat to himself due to Goten knowing not to make her angry And now I’m sad because that gag is great. (Personally I like the entire scene leading up to Baby Goten vs Gohan but meh) Also. I’d just like to present an idea to you about Baby previously taking over bodies without waiting for them to be full power. Remember Ginyu. He took over Goku’s body but was unable to draw out his full power. It’s possible that Baby needs his Saiyan hosts (or any host with a decent chunk of power) to be at max potential to fully utilize their body to their full potential. I know you mentioned Trunks but the lack of taking Trunks at his full potential could also be a reason why Baby was driven out of him at the time. As for Gohan not being infected through a cut. I just saw that as a visual cue to being taken over and that he still seeped in through Gohan’s countless wounds all over his body. I mean. He literally turns into a goopy face of himself as he takes over Gohan so I find that hard to take completely literally.

i actually think Vegeta acts more like a good person than in Super. In Super, during the ToP, he is still letting his pride get the better of him, and refuses to give ki to the genkidama, while in GT, he takes a shortcut to ssj4, even though it's not "honorable", because its simply the best choice he has at the time to protect the universe.

Super's take is different. We get to see him being a Dad to an earlier family, especially around Bra's birth. In the manga he spends more time reflecting on some of his sins and handling that pride. Super is slowly inching closer to End of Z as well, so how he's presented here doesn't necessarily contradict Super's interpretation. Ultimately, Super is more dedicated to keeping Vegeta as a rival, albeit a much friendlier one, to Goku

Super Vegeta didn't give his genki for the Genki Dama, but he did knock Ribrianne down when she tried to snipe Goku while he was powering it up, he was just being his typical tsundere self at that point (or maybe he wanted to save HIS own energy, who knows). GT Vegeta is a lot more mature than Super Vegeta, but it makes sense he isn't because he's still learning.

Honestly I liked the mustache. It was the flattop that Toei needed to ditch. I know that Vegeta keeping the mustache but going back to his original hair style, could make him look too much like King Vegeta, but I think it might have been an interesting thematic touch. Like the longer we live, the more we become our parents. It could even play into the greater theme generations past mistakes coming back to bite future generations in the butt.

I do like that gt progress vegeta into being full committed to earth while still feeling like vegeta. I like gt goten as he does feel like his own person unlike how he is not just following around trunks. he does feel chill and able to talk handle girls/city life better than gohan so i think it was a good idea to separate goten and trunks for the arc.

14:17 I was under the assumption that Baby's possesion worked like the scouters. Baby was able to posses Trunks in his base form, but was expelled the second he resisted by transforming into ssj, much like how scouters could read static power levels as high as 2nd form Frieza's 1 million but easily break against people with power levels of 20,000 because they charge up their ki too fast for it to calculate

Meanwhile Frieza talks about his 2nd form's 1 million power level as if its been years since he last checked, meaning the tech would've been older. Theoretically, scouters can read anyone's power level so long as they keep it stable and don't spike it by charging/transforming

I love the characterization for most of the cast here, even Toei trying to make Vegeta look as "cool" as possible is hilarious in an unintentional way. That scene with Chichi slapping Goten is definitely really messy and bad though, definitely seems like the writers had different ideas of what they wanted the scene to be and they never picked a lane. Even so, this is where I think the arc really takes off. I even like the juxtaposition of the silliness going on combined with the sinister horrific background threat that no one is aware of except the audience, helps emphasize a sense of corruption, taking a good thing and twisting it into something unsettling and a majority of it works really well.

Unfortunately, it's never stated outright, but that would have been the best explanation. By taking them over at their strongest, Baby can infiltrate their cellular structure more deeply, both preventing later expulsion and being able to access their memories. It could have made for a great escalation, but alas, without out any explanation, it comes across as inconsistencies instead.

In the DBS anime, Vegeta keeps constantly whining for validation, whining about not being as strong as Goku, whining about having to fuse, whining about having to collaborate with Goku (jeez... even in the Tournament of Power, they had to make it "a big deal" for Vegeta to reluctantly give Goku what was left of his energy before being eliminated...). I don't deny that there are some redeeming elements (like taking Trunks to the amusement park, defending Bulma from Beerus, becoming a pseudo-mentor to Cabba, and giving food to the survivors of the future), but essentially, he continued to be the same egoistic crybaby obsessed with surpassing Goku and having a chronic need for validation. This doesn't reflect much on his epiphany at the end of the Buu arc where he accepted that Son Goku is number one (something they considered in GT).

After this video and all the design discussions I kinda noticed something, that there are basically no Brunettes (Brown haired people) in the core DB cast. Sure, Vegeta would often have Brownish highlights in the anime and his King dad has that color in full, but it's more Auburn to me. That's very odd considering how common that hair color usually is in general. Maybe that's what happens when almost all Saiyans are set to have Black hair as default. But even then, many major earthling characters have Black hair too, both before and after Saiyans were introduced. Not counting transformations, Dragon Ball hair colors in general really have that odd balance between some Blondes, plenty of Black haired people, a few Redheads here and there (such as Commander Red, Suno, Recoom and N16) and all the weird stuff like Blue, lots of White (of the young, old and alien variety), Purple, a bit of Green (like Zarbon and more recently Granolah) and multiple straight up balds; but no Brunettes as far as I remember. So because of this, some anime original Brunettes like Palace in this arc and Cocoa in that Great Saiyaman movie filler episode of the Super anime stand out quite a bit more imo. Palace's sheltered rich girl personality might leave a bit to be desired to some, but I think she is one of the better original designs from GT regardless; and she does match very well with probably the most "non-reliant on Trunks or Goku" and independent Goten we've ever had (at least until the Super Hero prologue of the Super manga, though I don't remember much of it so my memory's a bit fuzzy on that). And since I'll most likely not have the chance to bring it up for a very long time I have to say that said Cocoa girl from Super that I mentioned before reminds me a lot of Sailor Jupiter. Very similar ponytaled brunette hairstyles in Toei productions; she was only missing the green eyes for a near identcal match.

Vegeta's hair is drawn brown to be fair. It's just a very dark brown, so most of the time outside of the cels you can barely even tell. Especially combined with the color degradation present on all of the home releases, Dragon Box in particular, and the less than stellar video quality we've had to work with over the years, everything gets messy.

The English dub made an odd change, as you know originally Chi-Chi's reaction to Vegeta's Moostache was silent, but in the aEnglish dub they add lines from Bulma asking Chi-Chi if she notices anything different about him, changing the context into Chi-Chi not being able to see any difference in him.

Granted I haven't watch through this in _ages,_ but as far as "Baby needs someone to be powered up to take them over" thing... Wasn't there an earlier point where, I think, Trunks was able to force him out by turning SS? Perhaps the idea is that, if they're _already_ in that stronger state, that makes it "easier" for him to maintain control over them. Because there wouldn't be a sudden jump in power that he couldn't properly maintain without having to "leave". Some of that may also be that he was much weaker those 1st few times, so by taking them over in that state it allows him to acclimate to it.

I get what Toriyama was going for with Moostache Vegeta, and it's a funny design, but he looks much more natural in Toei's second design. You can believe thats tbe sort of outfit he wear after settling on Eart for so long.

Honestly I can't imagine anyone being hyped or excited for this kind of Piccolo appearance. Like what is even the point? When I say that GT picked up some of the worst of Z, I mean stuff like this. Secondary characters will often appear and talk big only to get defeated immediately, and GT in particular loved abusing that trope. And you're supposed to get very, very surprised and very, very impressed with the villain's power every single time it happens...

My interpretation of Toriyama’s design of mustache Vegeta. I believe he was intended to be a “retired from battle” Japanese father type. He looks slight, and his hair and mustache scream “middle aged husband” to me. It was only after they decided to be more “Z” that the hair was finessed to be spikey, the mustache came off, and he looked formidable physically again. Shaved vegeta always felt like a retcon of Episode 2 vegeta, to me.

I think it's just a difference in creative priorities. Toriyama, as MistareFusion points out often, holds no iconography sacred. He has no problem changing characters and growing them and throwing out absolutely vital parts of their design to try something different. So yeah, he probably wanted Vegeta to undergo a similar transformation and would've made that look just as iconic as his other looks. Toei on the other hand just wants to squeeze as much familiarity and imagery out of the original manga/anime as they possibly can, which is why Super Vegeta has completely regressed visually to his Cell Saga look.

14:20 I think the point here is that them NOT using their Ki gives them enough power to overpower Baby later. Its like fighting someone right after their workout. They technically have a pump, but they would be way less capable than if you fought them before the workout. Oh, one more thing: I think using Pan's diary would have been great as a recap episode. Have her retell the initial stages of the arc as she makes the video for her parents at home. It would make a later scene hit way harder and it is also a fun idea for a recap and catch everyone up before Baby fully takes over.

Something you didn't mention is the how in the previous episode of Dissection, when Trunks expelled Baby, he appears to have gone SSJ and been unleashing ki. So the idea that releasing ki actually makes it easier for Baby doesn't mesh with that.

I'm guessing Bulma was able to examine Vegeta's hair between the events of end of Z to the Baby Saga in order to create barber tools strong enough to cut full blooded Saiyan hairs as we see Vegeta having two different hairstyles in GT as well as shaving away mustaches permanently. Also on a different note, what would GT have gone different if Vegeta was to go into space with Goku and Trunks to collect the Dragon Balls as the only adult, would his first interaction with Baby turn out differently before Baby heads to Earth, leaving Trunks to ask Vegeta what was going on which has Vegeta tell both Goku and Trunks the history of the Saiyan vs Tuffle war and why Baby wants revenge on the Saiyans, I think that would of made GT a little bit better which could limit the time Pan is on screen especially when it comes to the English dub

I don't think it's ever been said that Saiyan hair can't be cut? Just that it "doesn't change from they day they're born," or something like that. Personally I've always taken that to mean it'll grow back into the same length/style, not that it can't be cut or wouldn't grow back if cut.

The states of Saiyan hair are also the same as Earthlings'; its properties are just a little bit different." I mean there have been two versions of Prince Vegeta IV's hairstyle when he was a kid, there was a version of him with bangs which somehow must of been cut before we first saw him in Z and there's a version of him without the bangs with his iconic widow'ss peak Full blooded Saiyans unfortunately can't regrow their hair in Canon, but in the non-canon GT series, Full blooded Saiyans can regrow their hair but their hairstyle will never change. I always thought I heard Goku say something in the original Funimation dub that his hair couldn't be cut by earthling scissors unless I'm remembering wrong

They don't really get their hair cut in canon material as far as I can remember so the only one I can think of as an example is Nappa and that seems to be implied as more of a male pattern baldness thing. I love the dub but any details like that they might add are still non-canon.

@Yanhime97 maybe, but I like to think that full blooded Saiyans would need scissors strong enough to cut their hair even if their hair will grow back to the length they had. I wonder if Nappa went through a stressful time that caused his hair to fall out as I read stress can be one factor for hair loss whilst the other factor is genetics and male pattern baldness. Also for the non-canon version of Kid Vegeta, what happened to his bangs between his appearance in Bardock: Father of Goku and his first introduction in Z, did he cut them off of did they fall off causing his hairline to recede, same goes for Kid Vegeta's appearance in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods as he was shown to have his original hairstyle as a kid (the one with the bangs) but in the Super's rehash of that film, he didn't have any bangs just the widow's peak. On another note we have Tarble who had two hairstyles, in the manga version of Yo! Son Goku and his friends return, he had Vegeta's hairstyle but in the Anime adaptation he had a bang

There's something about the fact that Vegeta ditched his mid-life crisis in the Buu Arc for three entirely new ones that tickles my sides. Granted, calling "I'm possessed by an alien that's going to destroy the Earth" a mid-life crisis is probably a bit reductive. Regarding Baby possessing Trunks, I suppose you could argue that he failed to take over Trunks at the time because he wasn't raising his ki and learned from the experience. I'm not sure what to make of him being able to take over other lifeforms who don't seem to be able to manipulate ki, though, unless it's Frieza Force rules and they're technically operating at peak ki performance at all times. Finally, as far as Baby's lack of subtlety goes, I'm of two minds about it. On one hand, it would be significantly easier for him to just play subtle and get what he wants easier. On the other hand, the actual truth of what he's trying to accomplish is indiscernible to most of the characters and even if they were to figure out, he can just go about taking over the bodies of Earthlings anyway to force the hands of the characters. I suppose there is theoretically a way for things to go sour, much like Goku beats Baby out of Vegeta later, but he's probably too high on his own ego to contemplate that possibility just yet.

The Goten scene is really weird because it's so easy to come up with a way to hit the exact same beats. Baby-Goten comes home, is rude, Chichi yells at him a bit, Gohan comes back, chastises Goten, Baby-Goten goes 'oh yeah this guy ruined my date, ruined my shirt, and i didnt even get a decent fight, i'm all worked up, sorry mom,' Gohan offers to help him work out the stress, they fly off, done. It's not amazing writing or anything but it'd take changing like 5 lines. Iunno how they arrived at the setup they did.

I suppose the conceit is that getting directly into the bloodstream makes things easier for Baby to infect someone, as opposed to going via the respiratory system. It's an association that does help to further the idea of him being a parasite.

On the outrages of how Baby possessed everyone before Goten if they needed to power up to the max? Based on the Freeza forces responses it seems unless someone specifically controls their ki it's always at the max. And as for why Baby Goten doesn't pretend to be a normal Goten? I've always thought the show later implies that Baby's hatred and desire for revenge combined with the Saiyans biological hunger for battle made him act overly aggressive. He was also pretty overconfident, thinking he could beat anyone on earth. I mean he didn't even plan to use Gohan as a stepping stone, Gohan just appeared and was convenient... He originally just wanted to fight Vegeta immediately even with only Goten's body; and even after implying he's the weakest Saiyan other than Pan and Bra.

GT Vegeta is best Vegeta, he acts exactly like a retired Vegeta who already accepted he will never be "#1" would, and he is enjoying his quiet life on Earth...it is also adorable how he knows nobody takes him seriously anymore, so he has these little rants knowing people know he wont kill a fly...when it comes to the design, I think Toriyama nailed it, because Vegeta is *exactly* the kind of guy who would grow a mustache when he hits his mid-life crisis, along with a jacket that says "I was king when I was in highschool, you know?"...also, lets give credit to Toei for sticking to the canon, and not having his hair grow back. About your rant about Chichi, well...I think the whole sequence was made with the sole purpose of having Baby thinking Chichi must have some hidden power because of how terrified of her Goten is...which is pretty much the "everyone is scared of Chichi" gag from the past 10 years, I think the joke is lame, but its inofensive...however, she looking all happy about his mid-30s son getting on a fist fight with his young brother? now *that's* weird!

I agree with you. There is a kernel of a good joke in there. I like the idea that Baby instinctively knows not to cross Chichi. I just think the delivery of it smothers the joke. Aside from what I said in the video about Chichi's actions following no logical pattern given the context, the tone doesn't land. It's just like Pan and Giru. The violence is too much to be innocently sweet but not enough to be raucously slapstick. It's just realistic enough to seem abusive. And that's why I just can't find it funny.

Well, the idea that an eaten DB can't be found isn't based around Piccolo swallowing them. It's not even brought up then. That's from the late Red Ribbon Arc when the last Dragon Ball can't be found. Blooma suggests that something may have eaten it, as the waves emitted by the ball would be blocked. In practice, that idea is never actually used, as the ball is instead blocked by a special Pilaf box. But I agree it's an odd, desperate attempt at science.

You know if team four-star was still doing the series and got to this in GT! I could see three sequences getting rewritten. And the family dynamic scene is definitely getting rewritten. Maybe adding some details with chi chi, complaining about her second child not focusing on his studies this cetera dynamics. Maybe goten saying a naughty word, that warrants the whole being slapped in the face and getting a concussion! Just some variety of things maybe a few edits possibly switching around the whole her hitting first! Then again maybe this is the real reason why they decided to stop doing the whole a bridge series and it has nothing to do with the movie that they were setting up for that they had no way of making it funny without derailing the villain whatsoever! [look the pirate captain is really hard to make funny and be the central focus of the plot when the movie itself loses the plot of him and focuses on {Hercules} Mr. Satan]

In the story several past villains return to Earth from Hell, however one of them is Staff Officer Black. And the reason that's weird is because as you may remember we already saw him back in some filler for the Boo arc alongside Red directing a movie. This would seem to imply that Black and Red had been reincarnated. So how can Black still be in Hell, and have been reincarnated at the same time! Bet ya never thought of that one before, eh?
