Baby Elephant Khanyisa Runs to Adine! Lundi and Kumbura Rumble and Huddle Around Her!

I have been caring for my mother in law this week as she is nearing the end of her life. I told her stories of the brave little orphaned pink elephant who was taken in by a loving herd and how she is so lucky to have all these mothers to care and protect her. Made me think how lucky I have been that I had 2 wonderful mothers to love and protect me. I cared for my mother until she she had to leave and I will do the same for my other mother, just as they cared for me. We are all a HERD.

Bless your heart! I was in a somewhat similar position once and it's a hard, stressful situation but also a loving blessing you are giving to your mother-in-law. What a beautiful family. It was very interesting to hear about the hierarchy within the HERD 🐘. Setombe 🐘 was being a little cheeky today. Adine she threw mud on you 🤣. Me too, Carly. Kumbura, as well as Timisa and Khanyisa, hold a very special place in my heart. The three orphans, they formed deep and loving bonds as a sisterhood. Kumbura as the big sister has taken it upon herself to be the devoted protector and provider and parent--despite the fact she was also an orphan. She definitely has Eldest Daughter Syndrome and I totally relate to her, I was also the eldest daughter who had to play a parental role to younger siblings as we were very short on parents or parental figures... (Kumbura, Timi and Khanyisa at least have many caring elders, with Adine and the Allomums--that should be a pop band!--as well as many kind-hearted uncles and big brothers--including their human carers of course.) Testament to how intelligent and emotional and empathetic elephants are, I completely relate to an individual of a completely unrelated species! 😍❤🐘

It was so interesting to know about the hierarchy Dame Setombe being first before wonderful Matriarch Tokwe and mama Lundi then Limpopo before Bubi (I think Limpopo will be the Matriarch in the making) then Klasserie and Pisa the rebel tomboy Timi and little Miss Sunshine being the babies When Khanisa has not seen Adine for some time she absolutely needs her cuddle time with her human mom which was quite difficult because all our ellies wanted also to greet Adine It is so heartwarming to see that Lundi, Kumbura, Tokwe, Bubi are always ensuring that little Miss Sunshine is safe, sound and comfortable She really is everybody's darling 🐘❤

They say that elephants are intuitive and are capable of feeling emotions akin to ours. Perhaps they sense that you will be gone for a while and so they all wanted to greet you and hug you before your departure. Meisiekind and the others love your baby talk-especially in Afrikaans. I used to speak that way to my little Beagle and she would come running. Thanks for the description of the hierarchy amongst the females. Look at the graciousness of Tokwe, who gently steps aside for Setombe....and Kumbura with Lundi. and the others who respectfully turn around momentarily. I find their behaviors fascinating! Great video!

It is always so heartwarming to see the allomums watching over Khanyisa so devotedly. They indeed have maternal instincts as big as their bodies! I particularly love Kumbura who was herself orphaned. Despite being deprived of a biomum's love, she experienced being adopted by the herd and is paying that love forward to the newest adopted orphan. 💙💚💛💜 Adine, your rumbling is so convincing to my ear I cannot tell if it is you or them in any of the videos. But seeing as we don't yet have an English-Elephantese dictionary, do you not worry you might accidentally say something like "you're a wee bit stinky today" in Elephantese? I'm kidding of course! 😉❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Your maternal instincts are as big as an elephant's, and your deep and caring bond with Khanyisa is plain to see--look at how she came running to you! And I really feel the love in the entire human-elephant family, the intertwined caring between all the adults and the carers and you--and how you are all united in your devotion to protecting and raising Khanyisa, and her "big" sister "tiny" Timi as well! (I've noticed in recent videos that Khanyisa is catching up to Timisa! Or maybe that's just me?) That was really interesting how long Lundi stayed on guard looking and feeling for vibrations with her trunk. It looks like she spread the word the baby needed protecting (from some unknown threat), since the rest of the females showed up. I didn’t know Setombe ranked as high as she does. They tolerated Adine today. Make no mistake about it, khanysia is theirs. When Lundi came forward after khanysia ran to Adine it was nothing short of ...she's mine, why is she running ? They all became alarmed because of khanysia running to Adine like that. What amazed me is when Tokwe came in close, and did what Lundi wanted to do but didn't: she inspected khanysia very carefully and looked at Adine closely. That Setombe and Somopane came over startled me. Then Setombe threw that mud at Adine, a sure sign she wanted Adine away from khanysia. It's a incredible video. Adine of all the humans at Herd is the one the elephants respect , love the most. Yet, here we see clearly that once again this Herd is protective towards their own species first. That they are called semi wild is perhaps a stretch. In the end of the day, these elephants tolerate humans, they have never forgotten what humans have done to them before Adine rescued them. I'd say at a turn of a dime, they can and are wild.
