It's April 13th, and this is the latest video in a series on the new Baby Gorilla Kunda at The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. She was born in July to mom, Kebi. Kebi is 33 years old, Kunda is 8-1/2 months. Since Jameela has not been released into the exhibit I'm waiting to feature her soon.
Kayembe was the first "zoo born" gorilla born at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.
Kunda is the second baby born in Cleveland in less then 2 years.
Jameela is the first baby gorilla born via cesarean at the Fort Worth Zoo.
All of the gorillas at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo were born in zoos.
Birthdates: Mokolo 7/10/87, Fredrika 6/5/74, Nneka 9/23/98, Kebi 1/13/91/ Tusa 12/2/89, and Kayembe 10/26/21, and Kunda 7/19/23, Jameela 1/5/24.
The Conservation status of the Western Lowland gorilla is “Critically Endangered”.

It usually takes a month or more to integrate a surrogate into the troop. Nneka's brother was the only baby in the troop and was totally healthy. It still took a month to introduce him to Nneka's mother. SF zoo released video of the behind-the-scenes process. There is also video of Toni and Zahra's introduction in Columbus and Bulera and Gandai's introduction in Jacksonville. Kayembe must be staying with Nneka in the night quarters now. That's why she brings him into the habitat. See how happy he was to see Freddie? Freddie could be getting some Jameela time overnight.

Bom dia! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Kayembe is still a young child who needs his mum's attention and upbringing, so I don't know if it will be possible for Freddie to raise Jameele, Kayembe will try to take all the attention for himself. I hope I am wrong, but it is known how much in nature a mother raises a child, and here such a small age difference, between a potential new baby.

It's interesting that, during the separation times, they didn't opt to isolate Freddie so that she could be alone with Jameela for closer physical bonding. Maybe even put them with Kebi and Kunda, so that Kunda can also have some Kayembe-free time to move about without her mother being so guarded. Then Tusa alone or with Mokolo, Nneka, and Kayembe. Also, I wish they'd resolve the research issue of gorilla heart disease... It's got to be something staring them right in the eyes. No way all these 'broken hearts' is a coincidence.

That’s my question too. Is Jameela getting a private introduction to the troop members during the day? The way you laid it out makes sense. Jameela has been in Cleveland for 2 weeks! I’m frustrated that the zoo doesn’t put out a more detailed, daily update. There are a lot of gorilla and primate aficionados who would love to see what is happening in real life. Maybe I’m impatient but I don’t think i’m alone.
@larrysanimalsafari
@larrysanimalsafari 2 ай бұрын
What the zoo decides to publish is up to them. Sorry, I’m just a guest entering the zoo. The heart disease issue is a complex one. Cleveland has started (with 2 other zoos) feeding the gorillas a biscuit free diet. It will take 20-25 years to see how it works - they need a gorillas to grow up in that diet to see if it works.

@@shawna6683 You are definitely not alone. I think a lot of us are excited with anticipation. While I get that they have to let the troop guide matters for the safety and well-being of all, I wish they had a staff member who could regularly film the behind the scenes moments for the educational interests of those of us who do want to know more about the daily work of primate keepers. Larry's updates are awesome, but, even by his own admission, he can only cover so much.

@@TheSageisBack I’m with you 100%. The daily work of primate keepers is a wealth stories that a lot of people want to know about. It’s not something that emphasizes the conservation story that zoos have to push but come on! There are @ 400 captive gorillas in the US. I want to know what their lives are like. Zoos could have a subscription model that would allow them to raise money for conservation and enrichment projects. Larry must get frustrated that he can’t tell more; or that he isn’t provided with more information. I’m sorry that my frustration with the portrayal of gorilla captivity is on full display. It’s hard to write comments. 🤷‍♀️I hope that no one is offended.

Thank you. Nneka had limited nursing of Kayembe, Freddie became the “go to”gorilla for nursing. Kayembe , even now, still received a bottle from keepers, he was weaned down from about 12 per day to now just one. I imagine that’s how it will work for Jameela. My knowledge of the troop is gathered from 2 or 3 visits of the gorillas each week since February of 2021. Do I catch everything, nope , but I believe I provide the most complete recap that you will find of this troop anywhere!!

More details later in this thread. But, from what I’ve learned from 2 years following this troop, the baby- Kayembe will sleep with his mom for roughly two years- that would be Freddie. While no guests see the gorillas sleeping - for a while there Nneka had very little to do with Kayembe.

Now this is just my thoughts, first I feel Kayembe is too big to still jump on moms back 2nd that may ne be as much of an issue once baby J is with the troop, The tantrums and acting out when he does not get his way. He reminds me of 5 year old Kintaro. Baby K like to play the same role when he is not spoiled, pokes out his lips, doesn't always work

He's only two... won't be three until the end of the year. He's still a baby (toddler-aged) who nurses and plays. That's why they are supposedly trying new separations... to work with them to get safely used to Jameela's presence. The staff is reportedly using rewards systems to get Kayembe to be calm in her presence, which actually seems to bring him excitement and joy.

Oh as others have already commented, he is VERY interested and wants to play with Kunda. But he is very rough and runs right into Kebi and Kunda. Kebi does all she can to prevent him from dragging Kunda away. Just an observation , Columbus had a baby gorilla in July also. That baby had a man 8 and 10 year old males in troop. Someone mentioned the two males would steal the baby from mom and run with it all around exhibit. Those two males are now temporarily at Zoo Atlanta and the baby Kwame has a couple scrapes on her head today. Are they from being dragged around the habitat? I don’t know.

@mortalclown3812

She was almost twenty when she went, fwiw. The zoos all cooperate to ensure genetic diversity, etc. They're so critically endangered that they have this giant chart, for wont of a better term, to make sure troops are balanced re: male/ females of certain ages. In the wild, they'd form new troops, too. They try to mimic it as much as possible. Sanctuaries would be next best to their native habitat, but the land, vets, etc are cost prohibitive. (I've been fretting about gorillas, too, and totally wondered if it was traumatic for them to be separated!) ❤❤❤

Gorillas generally eat browse, ie leaves, plants, small branches, bark, buds off plants/ trees and some bananas, and other fruit in season in the jungle and I suppose some root items. Zoos must adapt, they can offer most of that - romaine, kale, broccoli, green beans, and other legumes. Don’t think oranges grow in jungle.

It may be something to do with Mokolo’s heart problem. Fruit is very high in sugar/carbohydrates (as are starchy vegetables like potato and corn), so it can lead to excessive weight gain, which puts a strain on the heart. They love sweet things, but like humans, are better off if they have them only rarely as a special treat. 😄 As Larry said, gorillas don’t eat a lot of fruit in the wild. I was surprised to read somewhere that their digestive systems are adapted to consume grass and tough greens and are more similar to the digestive system of horses than of humans! 😊

I saw a video from the Cleveland Metropark Zoo Channel and a curator was explaining the diet the gorillas receive. She said they receive a low starch, high fiber diet. Their diet consists of a lot of different leafy greens, plus the browse as Larry's response to you provides. The Zoo said that they give no fruit because of the high sugar content. I've read that a diet with high sugar content easily causes dental concerns in gorillas - cavities, tooth loss, gum disease, and poor nutrition. Additionally, the research showed that poor dental hygiene can contribute to heart disease. The Cleveland Channel gives a lot of information if you are interested. 🦍🦍 Happy gorilla watching to you!

@@vjc2270 I was wondering if you have ever checked out the Cleveland Metropark Zoo Channel? If not, you might be interested. They showed Mokolo receiving a cardio mobile test. (I was surprised - I had seen them advertised on T.V. but had never been around anyone taking one.) The zookeeper had Mokolo place his two index fingers on the rectangular pad and I just thought it was incredible!

Gorillas in the wild generally get their water off/from the vegetation they are eating. In Cleveland the indoor habitat does not have a “faucet”, like Columbus has for their orangutans, so the gorillas get their water off vegetation. Outside the same applies but, it is a faucet (like you use for a hamster) that the gorillas can get water from if not from the vegetation.
