Baby Gorilla - #48 Kunda with Kebi

It's another nice day and I'm visiting the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo to see Kunda. She is Kebi's (Kebi Moyo) baby. Kebi is finally letting Kunda crawl around. This video only has baby gorilla Kunda and Kebi.

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Gorilla Details:
Mokolo - born at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo, he came to Cleveland in 1994. At that time, he joined three younger gorillas to make up Cleveland's Bachelor Group. Eventually, we were left with only 2 gorillas, Mokolo & Bebac, then Bebac died in 2017 (from heart disease-not mentioned in the video). Mokolo is now 36 years old. He is the dad of Kayembe and Kunda. Females were brought to Cleveland starting in the Spring of 2017
Fredrika - At 49 years old, she is the oldest adult female in the troop. She is Kayembe's surrogate mom She has raised four babies of her own. She came to Cleveland from Zoo Miami in April of 2017.
Kebi - (Kebi Moyo) she came from The Columbus Zoo & Aquarium in May of 2017. She had her first baby at the age of 8. Kebi's first baby is named Kambera Dupe and she is currently at Zoo Atlanta. Kebi is now 32 years old.
Nneka - born in San Francisco. She came to Cleveland in April 2018. She gave birth to Cleveland's FIRST baby gorilla in 2021 (a male named Kayembe). She is 25 years old. Nneka's first baby was raised by its grandmother because Nneka did not show any proper maternal care then (San Francisco Zoo). Today, Fredrika is raising Nneka’s second baby, Kayembe. Again Nneka, did not show proper maternal care for this baby either.
Tusa - she is the smallest and lowest ranking adult in the troop. She arrived in Cleveland in May of 2019 from the Albuquerque BioPark Zoo in New Mexico. Tusa is 32, but has her 33rd birthday on December 2nd. Tusa was hand reared by humans, and she can get very vocal when upset.
Kayembe - has the honor of being the first baby gorilla born at the Cleveland Zoo. He was born October 26, 2021, and is two years old now. Like most toddlers, he is very active. He plays most often with Fredrika and Nneka. His birth mom is Nneka, dad is Mokolo.
Kunda - is the second baby gorilla born at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. She was born July 19th 2023. Her mom is Kebi and her dad is Mokolo.
Jameela - born via c-section to Sekani in Fort Worth Texas zoo. Sekani is 33 years old and Jameela was her 4th baby. Sekani did not accept Jameela after recovering from her
c-section. A search for a foster mom led her to Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.
Birthdates: Mokolo 7/10/87, Fredrika 6/5/74, Nneka 9/23/98, Kebi 1/13/91/ Tusa 12/2/89, and Kayembe 10/26/21, and Kunda 7/19/23, Jameela 1/5/24.
The Conservation status of the Western Lowland gorilla is “Critically Endangered”.

Thank you Larry for providing Kunda updates. Yes the Jamela story is extraordinary but would hate to miss out on Kunda’s growth as she is just now allowed to “spread her wings”. I think she’s such a good and extremely protective mom because Kebi was young when she had her first daughter and her mom had to raise it. I think Kebi learn a lot watching Freddy with Kay and she at 30 was ready to raise her own baby and maybe remember that her mom had to raise her first. Kebi just didn’t know how but she probably doesn’t understand anything but my mom raised my first daughter. So she’s showed she’s an excellent mother to Kunda. I love how now Kebi and Kunda like to get as close as they can to Jameela and Freddy. I think she’s going to be tall and the same size as her mom, I think she just looks thinner because she so long and that makes sense because Kebi is a tall gorilla herself. I think they’re all precious and do just fine. Jameela was able to be fostered soon enough that she’ll not really remember that human’s raised her for a bit and the zoo staff stays hands off as much as possible now as well until a foster mom can be found. Kintaro from Kyoto City Zoo was like Kunda, a little small, and skinny, even though Genki nursed him successfully (Gentaro was given back to her when he was 10 months old). It was only after Kintaro was a year old, Genki gave him more freedom (she was exactly like Kebi). Kintaro took off, began foraging for food by his little self, and began gaining weight.

Awwwwwwww - thanks so much Larry❣️ I love pretty little Kunda and her tiny adventures. With every video she seems to be getting a little more independence - I think Kebi feels more secure about letting Kunda roam now that Kayembe is preoccupied with his own baby sister. 🥰 It’s really interesting that the babies who receive supplementary bottle feeds are a lot chunkier than those who don’t, but well done to Kebi for insisting on doing it her way. Maybe not getting the extra fat and calories will mean health benefits for Kunda in the long term.🤷‍♀️ I don’t know - either way, she’s an adorable little poppet.❤

Thanks! Hey Larry, I live in Fletcher OK about 3.5 hours north of Ft. Worth. I am a big gorilla lover, and this contribution is to help support you bringing me Jameela videos. My wife and I were planning to go see Jameela, but that didnt work out wince Jameela was sent to Cleveland. I can't come to Cleveland because I am a stage 4 prostate cancer patient and just can't up and take a trip. So I still can see Jameela through your videos and other videos on KZbin. That was pretty amazing seeing her able to get down and move around. I assume Kayembe was not in there, was he? What is the month difference between Kunda and Jameela? They are both absolutely adorable, I can’t wait to see them play together.

Kunda was born last July, Jameela this past January 5th. Jameela has been bottle fed by keepers since her birth. Kunda has had zero bottles, nurses from Kebi.

I think Kunda is just small. If humans can have variations in sizes, why not gorillas? I myself am a tiny woman, even though my mom's family are all tall! I inherited my father's mother's size🤷‍♀️

I can understand perhaps why Kebi won’t allow the **Keepers** to take Kunda for feedings. I quess Kebi is thinking about the Last time she allowed them to take her other little girl and she never ever saw her again 😢

Kunda is Kebi's infant. Zoo staff will offer bottles to supplement Kunda. So far Kebi has not allowed them to give her a bottle. Freddie is Kayembe's foster mom. (Kayembe's birth mom is Nneka) Freddie lets keepers feed Kayembe supplemental bottles, and I believe she is allowing keepers to do the same with Jameela.

Get used to it. If you follow these gorilla troops long enough, you will be shocked by the way these families are separated. There is no rhyme or reason to have separated Kebi's daughter from her silverback. She was the only one in the group who actually liked him. He beat one of his females mercilessly (Fredrika's daughter) while her daughter helplessly watched. The SSP finally moved Nia to another group but left her daughter with the silverback. Then, they sent Kebi's daughter to another silverback in Atlanta.

When do they feed them in the wild they eat plants ☘️☘️ and vegetables 🥒🍆 and 🍓🍑 by the tons for 6 hours a day they vegetarian they need a lot of food 🥑🥝 for protein they wasn't feeding Kevin. Enough food 🥑🥝 that's why her baby is so small and Kebi. Is very skinny most garrillas have big stomach Kebi doesn't she's very skinny and under weight these garrillas have to eat a lot of food 🥑🥝 to main tian there size and health a lot of garrillas starve to death in cativy and that causes depression and sadness and makes them reject there babies. Feed them please 🙏 or send them back to Africa we're they will be well tooken care of stop starving them giving them very little food 🥑🥝 it's not enough specially for a silver back Kebi is very skinny am surprised she had enough breast milk for her kinda. Feed them please 🙏🙏🙏 God bless them I wish them a long and happy and healthy life with plenty of there favorite foods. I love garrillas so much do better thanks for sharing this is desurbing to watch tho these garrillas are vegetarian they starving them

These gorillas are fed often. This video was made after 12 noon. On this day the Gorillas had eaten /or gathered up their stash of food - and it wasn’t seen on camera. Their get more food in the afternoon - it’s spread throughout the exhibit space and they begin another period of time gathering and eating.
