Baby Gorillas - Jameela #5(Fort Worth Zoo) and Kunda (Cleveland)

This is the third in a series of videos on the new baby gorilla - Jameela at The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Jameela is from The Fort Worth Zoo. She is the 12 week old baby gorilla who is searching for a foster mom. You also see Kunda (8 months old) in this video. Jameela was born January 5, 2024 to mom, Sekani. Jameela is Sekani's 4th baby, mom is 33.
Kayembe was the first "zoo born" gorilla born at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.
Kunda is the second baby born in Cleveland in less then 2 years.
Jameela is the first baby gorilla born via cesarean at the Fort Worth Zoo.
Birthdates: Mokolo 7/10/87, Fredrika 6/5/74, Nneka 9/23/98, Kebi 1/13/91/ Tusa 12/2/89, and Kayembe 10/26/21, and Kunda 7/19/23, Jameela 1/5/24.

I completely agree!!! Now if is our society could find its way to afford all unborn human babies the same level of interest and compassion. I think Jameela is very special and blessed that she was born into such a loving and devoted family at the Fort Worth Zoo. Thank you folks for sharing your journey with this little life. I just hope that her story may touch many hearts and strengthen a cultural resolve to respect life from conception to natural death. Sweet, sweet babies❣️ Thanks so much for keeping us updated, Larry. 🙏 Thanks to the comments on this post, I just saw the footage from Cleveland Zoo showing Freddie holding baby Jameela. 😃😍 Apparently Jameela spent two hours with Freddie and Kayembe, until little man got a bit over-excited. I’m amazed at how quickly the introduction is progressing. Freddie is such a wonderful Mama. Huge respect also to the keepers from both Cleveland and Fort Worth - they really know their stuff and have done a wonderful job in a very delicate situation. ❤👏👏👏 P.S. Is it just me, or is Kebi relaxing a little with Kunda? Baby girl seems to be allowed a little more freedom these days❣️

Isn't Jameela the baby gorilla who got rejected by her mom after the emergency cesarean? It does happen occasionally after surgical intervention, I think it's because the maternity hormones don't kick in and then mom rejects the baby. So sad, gorillas are usually excellent mothers!

Larry, i know you can't capture every moment, although if you did i think so many would keep watching every second 😊. Im curious though. In one video they had on the Texas news they held baby jameela up to the grating. Do they continue to do that from time to time? Was wondering because when for example Freddie comes by, maybe she would show more interest and show more signs of acceptance. That goes for all of them, but i know they're hoping she would be the surrogate. Just curious if you've seen that or have heard anything relating to that. As always, thanks for sharing ❤

First, as far as I can tell, they sit with Jameela at the mesh from about 10 am to 5pm. Yes, they do hold her up to the mesh, anytime a large gorilla is between me and them I don’t use it. Do I catch it every time, nope. I’ve got to rewatch every second of my video at least 3 times. That’s a lot of time spent- can’t capture all moments. Thanks 👋😁

Why they removed it from her birth mom? Mom didn’t accept it as hers after the c-section. Why the took it back from Freddie? Keep in mind the zoo has Not laid out all the steps to their plan, but they have indicated everyone must be patient and allow time for this transition. As a guest, following along, it appears this is a multi-step process. They feel they cannot just drop baby Jameela in with the troop and walk away. They want to be sure this is safe for her. They need Freddie to bond with the baby, Mokolo to surely accept it, Kayembe to be more gentle, less rambunctious around Jameela, and the remaining adults to accept the new baby. How long will that take? No one has said.

Jameela does not spend her days IN with the gorillas. She gets 24/7 care from humans right now. She gets formula from a bottle - at least for the past 3 months. In the future? Fredrika did start to lactate to feed Kayembe, maybe that can / will continue.

Cleveland is a part of the Assoc. Of Zoos and Aquariums of North America. The primary language in most areas is English. For Europe and Asia I have no idea.

Nneka is one of the adult females. She gave birth to Kayembe but didn’t show proper maternal care. Luckily an older experienced female in the group picked it/Kayembe up and has taken care of him ever since.

Tusa has not had a baby. Freddie is a first choice, no news on Tusa, Nneka or Kebi. Big not interested in her ? He has sat an observed Jameela.

I find it weird that when the baby is small and only breastfeeding all is o.k. with Mama. Once the baby starts consume solids Mama will not share her food and she will chase down her offspring to take away any solid food it has managed to grab for herself. Plus other adults will do the same to the young ones. The humans are so gentle with the baby and once the babies are returned to the troop, some gentleness but real gentleness goes out the door.

Not sure why you think that. I did not witness any gorilla chasing down Kayembe for his food these past couple years. Does it ever happen, probably. Chase down, never seen it though. I’ve seen a young orangutan, maybe 7 years old snatch food from a 2 year old.

I have only observed this in macaques. Macaque mothers can be very abusive towards their little ones. But gorillas are usually excellent mothers.

@@larrysanimalsafari Have not see it with this troop but I seen it with baby Ringo's troop, where his Aunt and Dad took food from him and baby Summono troop. I was wrong to assume all troops were alike.

Humans are destroying their natural habitat and killing the gorillas. Zoos offer steps to educate and raise money to help protect gorillas and other species in danger.
