Baby Gorillas - Kunda and Kayembe #23-1/2. 12/9/23

Watch Kayembe, at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo plead over and over with Kebi to let him touch and play with her new baby, Kunda. Kayembe also spends some time with his dad, Mokolo. Kunda was born on July 19, 2023. Her mom is Kebi (Kebi Moyo) and her dad is the leader of the troop - Mokolo.
Birthdates: Mokolo 7/10/87, Fredrika 6/5/74, Nneka 9/23/98, Kebi 1/13/91/ Tusa 12/2/89, and Kayembe 10/26/21, and Kunda 7/19/23.
The Conservation status of the Western Lowland gorilla is “Critically Endangered”.

Cleveland Gorilla Troop:
Mokolo - born at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo, he came to Cleveland in 1994. At that time, he joined three younger gorillas to make up Cleveland's Bachelor Group. Eventually, we were left with only 2 gorillas, Mokolo & Bebac, then Bebac died in 2017 (from heart disease-not mentioned in the video). Mokolo is now 36 years old. He is the dad of Kayembe and Kunda. Females were brought to Cleveland starting in the Spring of 2017 Fredrika - At 49 years old, she is the oldest adult female in the troop. She is Kayembe's surrogate mom She has raised four babies of her own. She came to Cleveland from Zoo Miami in April of 2017. Kebi - (Kebi Moyo) she came from the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium in May of 2017. She had her first baby at the age of 8. Kebi's first baby is named Kambera Dupe and she is currently at Zoo Atlanta. Kebi is now 32 years old. Nneka - born in San Francisco. She came to Cleveland in April 2018. She gave birth to Cleveland's FIRST baby gorilla in 2021 (a male named Kayembe). She is 25 years old. Nneka's first baby was raised by its grandmother because Nneka did not show any proper maternal care then (San Francisco Zoo). Today, Fredrika is raising Nneka’s second baby, Kayembe. Again Nneka, did not show proper maternal care for this baby either. Tusa - she is the smallest and lowest ranking adult in the troop. She arrived in Cleveland in May of 2019 from the Albuquerque BioPark Zoo in New Mexico. Tusa is 32, but has her 33rd birthday on December 2nd. Tusa was hand reared by humans, and she can get very vocal when upset. Kayembe - has the honor of being the first baby gorilla born at the Cleveland Zoo. He was born October 26, 2021, and is two years old now. Like most toddlers, he is very active. He plays most often with Fredrika and Nneka. His birth mom is Nneka, dad is Mokolo. Kunda - is the second baby gorilla born at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. She was born July 19th 2023. Her mom is Kebi and her dad is Mokolo

How wonderful to see Mokolo playing with Kayembe so affectionately❣️ This video is such a joy. 🤩 It looked like Kayembe was trying sooooo hard to be a good boy, sitting next to Kebi and playing nicely, but he just couldn’t resist trying to touch the baby. 😂 It was so sweet when tiny Kunda reached out to Kayembe, but Kebi was having none of that! Not sure if Kayembe’s little dance was for the baby’s amusement or out of frustration from being so close yet so far. 😂😂 The new hammocks are lovely - Kebi is so relaxed she even allowed Kunda to move entirely away from her! 😃 Another entirely wonderful video - thanks as always, Larry. 🙏👏🤩

I feel so bad for keyembe sometimes because he doesn’t know how to play with his dad and I don’t feel like Mokolo shows him!!! 😂 I agree with the fact that he so wants to touch Kunda but again he doesn’t know how to so he get frustrated and goes in for the kill! Lol

Kunda is doing very well! It's amazing how much she has progressed in the last month. I loved seeing her trying to embrace Kayembe. Soon Kayembe will literally steal her from mama. I am so happy for Kebi. She just wanted to participate in Kayembe's upbringing. Now she gets two for the price of one. Good video as usual Larry!

Heart-melted! 😂❤ Kebi AND Mokolo succumbing to Kayembe's 'best boi' behavior. Maybe it helps to know the back story, but watching Kayembe TRY so hard to prove he's gentle was adorable. And amazing. And then Kunda's wobbly peeks at her half-bro. Suddenly, the idea of these two playing together doesn't seem as far off. What a great video. 😂 That’s what I thought too - Kayembe is trying SO hard to be calm and gentle, but his desperation to play with Kunda just gets the better of him❣️ Meanwhile, tiny as she is, Kunda is very keen to become acquainted with her big brother. 😍 You’re right: it wont be too long before the two of them are rioting around together! 🤩

Kayembe was showing off for Kunda! That was SO dear. I’ve been afraid to mention that Kunda has always appeared top heavy to me. Her little head looks too big for her tiny, delicate body to carry. I think Kebi knows that her baby is more fragile than is typical so she is extra vigilant about tummy time for Kunda. Have the keepers said anything Larry?

I have only heard Kebi is a good mom, very protective but good. The baby does not get any supplements from staff, although Kebi does. For a Lactating mom that is good to hear.

Eu Vendo Kayembe nessa insistencia pra brincar e tocar na irmanzinha, eu só me lembro de GENTARO que fazia do mesmo jeito pra tocar bo irmão kintaro quando nasceu e a mãe genki nao deixava de jeito nenhum..kkk . This is adorable. Kebi is very patient and gentle at keeping excited and Sweet little Kayembe a safe distance from her baby. Kayembe always wanted and needed a play mate. I think he will be a wonderful big brother and they will play, grow and love each other very much. Thank you for these beautiful videos and all the information you give. It is so helpful knowing so many details of these precious souls we adore so much. NOW, all we need is to hear their sweet little giggles "behind the scenes!" Us fans rarely get to hear the vocalizations they make and it is great for us to get a video hearing them happy and laughing. Just a Christmas WISH. LOL! Thank you so much!

Hey Larry! Quick question I’ve always wondered about while watching gorilla videos so maybe you can help me out. When Kebi is playing with Kayembe, is she tickling his tummy or grabbing his leg or something? I see a lot of videos of the adults playing with the younger ones and sometimes it looks like they are checking out their private parts but it’s lasts longer than I think it would if that’s what they are doing… Especially when the silverbacks are playing with the kids. Like Mokolo does with Kayembe as well. Hopefully you can shed some light on this!! 😂 great videos can’t wait to see the next one!

As for tickling/grabbing/inspecting body parts I believe they are doing all of the above. Grooming is an important part of life for most primates. As members of the troop helping each other clean (remove dirt, bugs, inspect for skin conditions) and comfort each other - this is done daily. (and since there are no gorilla medical clinics/or even a washcloth & soap), this regular close contact/inspection is an important part of staying healthy).

Sweet stuff, it won't be long before Kunda is allowed to touch Kayembe. Others wrote below about Mokola playing with Kayembe, but it appeared to me that it was mostly touching Kayembe's not-so-private parts. I know that touching, smelling and play-acting copulation is a part of natural child and some adult gorilla behavior. Kayembe seems to know to allow some of it but I didn't know that it might be considered play. I see it all the time in other gorilla videos, but I think I don't really understand it. Larry FYI - in the video you say to click the link to watch Kayembe at 4 months old, but I didn't see a link.

The link appears at 9:05 in the video and runs for 7 or 8 seconds (I cannot control the duration - it takes you to the 3rd video in my series on Kayembe, it runs about 4-1/2 minutes.) I didn't interpret Mokolo's touching to be related to copulation. I've seen Mokolo grab Kayembe's legs/arms before, pin him down, turn him over - so I think its kind of a power thing. I'm the dominant male - you sit where i want you. Just my thoughts on it.

@@larrysanimalsafari Sorry, I wasn't suggesting the touching was related to copulation, but to the natural touching all gorillas do when checking each other out, which often seems to be the genitals. I thought that's what Mokolo was doing, but maybe I've had the wrong perception all along when I watch gorilla videos.

Why can't you control Kayembe? Kunda can't even learn to walk. She can play normally. Put him in another area for a couple of hours so Kunda can begin to crawl and walk and strengthen her legs. Why can't you ever have a video of Kunda with out Kayembe stealing the attention? There are plenty of Kayembe without Kunda . Kunda is positively adorable and Kibe is such a good mother. I love watching them without Kayembe.
