*Man, birds are ruthless!! We raise Charolais cows on my family's ranch and you really need to be there as they give birth..sometimes you get lucky and all goes well without you watching them..BUT for the folks out there that don't know, buzzards will literally peck out the eyes of a baby calf, before it's not even entirely out of the womb..I've had to spend alot of time guarding the mama cows in labor, with a gun ready to shoot the birds..one of the greatest moments of my life has been helping to deliver a baby calf..it's a magical experience to say the least..freaking birds man..NEVER underestimate the damage a bird can do* 😳

For those of you who obviously have no clue about childbirth, the seagull was trying to eat the placenta. Historically, most mammals which produce one will eat it once they're finished giving birth, because of how high in nutrients it is, and it aids the mother with vitamins (I'm not a girl, but from what I've seen childbirth looks pretty tiring). Humans usually don't anymore, due to some social stigma, but many women elect to do so. The seagull just wanted a little snack :)

Humans don't eat their placentas because they're a filter organ. The placenta catches and isolates environmental toxins that the mother takes in so they don't harm the baby's development. Many times, they contain heavy metals and other compounds you wouldn't consume with food. Most animals eat the placenta not only to recycle any nutritional value, but mostly to avoid attracting predators. No doctors recommend consuming placenta.

For those questioning why we didn’t intervene and shoo the bird away: 1. It was a protected beach which was cordoned off with no one allowed near the seals. 2. That’s what nature is like! We don’t always control what happens in the natural world! 3. The baby seal was fine! No harm, no fowl! 😜

two summers ago i went to a kayaking camp at the inner harbor and a seal flopped onto our dock and gave birth! I am so not kidding. for a moment we just thought it was just laying there doing nothing, but then it just gave birth! we saw the cutest baby seal. we were so lucky :)
