Hi just watched the demo for baby lock Gloria it a dream machine doing all I find difficult I cannot work out if I want a Coverstitch or overlocker I was spoilt to see Gloria in all her wonderful ways and the wave is a beautiful stitch I’d luv to use one just to say I have ,luvTeresa

It's a lovely machine with a lot of nice quality of life features, but one thing I've never understood, and never found anyone explaining, is what the practical purpose is of the 8-thread combo stitch? I understand a 5-thread where you have a 2-thread chain stitch for construction and a separate 3-thread overlock stitch to finish the seam allowance, and having them be separate means that if one of them gets snagged and starts to unravel, the other will still hold the seam together. But what's the purpose of adding 2 more chain stitch needle threads and an additional overlock needle thread? Is there a concrete example you can point to for where a stitch like this would be used in a garment or craft project?

The point of the 8 thread option is really decorative and it just highlights the fact that because each thread has its own channel you can combine any coverstitch and overlocker stitch to create a decorative stitch. You might want to use the 8 thread on table mats or craft projects as a decorative stitch using the wrong side on the right side for example. There is also a use for a combined overlocker and coverstitch stitch as more of a utility stitch, so not exactly an 8 thread, but at least a 7 thread. This would be by using a narrow coverstitch and a 3 or 4 thread overlocking stitch combination as an alternative to the 5 thread safety stitch. This is a good option with stretchier fabrics because the chain stitch of the 5 thread safety stitch doesn't have as much stretch as the combined overlocker and coverstitch. Therefore if you wanted a really strong seam on a stretch fabric the overlocker coverstitch combined option is a good one - you still have the stretch and a good, strong seam.
